By not "retiring", he gets the balance of his contract.

If he retired, he'd walk away from the $16m he's owed for the next two seasons. (Will help Sharks get to floor.)

He can be put on LTIR. (It's also possible to "trade" his contract.)

(When his contract expires, the Sharks will be looking to sign Smith and Celebrini to their second contracts.)
