Rumor: Sharks looking to trade up to #1

No way am I trading Dickinson or Chernyshov. I’d consider Musty + Dallas 1st or Dallas 1st and Edmonton 1st next year (plus our 2nd obviously).

It ultimately depends on how Darche values Misa and Schaefer.

Mute point because Dickinson is worth #3 in this draft all on his own.

It’s funny how Isles fans have convinced themselves that Schaefer being the consensus #1 overall means that he’s head and shoulders above Misa. That’s simply not the case.

Fantasize about getting Dickinson, Eklund, our 2026 1st, whatever you want. It’s not happening.
I am trying to spread this gospel to my people. Alas, it is taking a minute to sink in.

Why would a team that is trying to improve its D core trade their best defensive prospect to do it? Why would they (or anyone) trade an unprotected first in a better draft?

Gotta be reasonable here

Sure, maybe. But you are talking like picking this kid is guaranteeing us a dynasty, which is uh, ridiculous.
There’s always the option of passing on the next Potvin (ceiling of this D man) for a couple guys who profile like Horvat.

Again, this is absolutely f***ing horrible for the Sharks. They aren’t giving up #2 and another top-5 pick for Schaefer and a mid 1st.

Why would the Islanders move down from 1 to 2 in a draft with a well-defined dropoff at that spot without getting something substantial to do it?

An example of a similar historical trade ask, the Rangers wanted Brady Tkachuk as the sweetener to swap 1st OA with 3rd OA. The Senators obviously said no. That was a draft where the 2nd and 3rd OA pick were both on the same tier, and both though to be 1st overall type talents, it's just that Lafreniere was a tier above them.

Neither side would do the deal I proposed because there is way too much risk both ways, but it's not horrible for the Sharks.

At most, I'd offer the Dallas 1st rounder to swap picks. If the Islanders want Schaefer, there is no reason for them to trade the pick unless they are getting something ridiculous in return. Sharks should not be giving up something ridiculous for a 17 year old who is very much a question mark.

If the Islanders want a forward instead, it shouldn't require much to drop down to #2 and have their pick of forwards.

That’s an easy no from the Sharks. Darche seems intent on making the pick so I doubt much will actually happen but clicks need to be had. Grier isn’t drafting for need and a move up will either be reasonable in value and much less than any Islanders fan would expect or just won’t happen.

Going to take more then the 29th or 30th this year as the add in to swap picks. It’s not so much that the Islanders might want a forward, it’s more so that San Jose wants Schaefer for the back end to fit into the core with the high end forward talent.

Who says there’s a significant gap between one and two? Again, Schaefer being consensus #1 is true hut it doesn’t mean there’s a significant gap between him and Misa. The Athletic did a round table with a bunch of prospect writers and they agreed that Schaefer was #1 but that Misa was in the same tier and that the the gap was Misa and the rest of the field.

He is. But I am wildly curious who you from the 2025 draft you would take over him.

wildly?! How can I answer that when the draft hasn't happened yet? If you're asking my pre-draft selections I'd easily go Schafer, Misa, Hagens, probably Martone and Desnoyers(wild card boom or bust here). And that is in a weak draft class....your guy might be good but you have a Jeckel and Hyde type of response that's either insightful and concrete or complete bullshit. Your on the bullshit here. But go ahead prove me wrong...offer Dickinson to the top 4 fan bases on the main board for their pick.....Add a poll and prove me wrong maybe I'm out to lunch on my analysis and if so my bad....

I think what’s being said by some shark fans, and I agree, is that if the Islanders are set on Schaefer they won’t move the pick, if they want a forward, and are going to take a forward at 1, then they would trade with the Sharks but it wouldn’t be a haul, it would be getting a bit extra and the player they are going to draft anyway

I don't think the "Sharks are desperate for Schaefer" thing is as strong in reality as it is on messageboards. Sharks would like to draft Schaefer and thus there are investigations to see if that's a possibility. But I doubt Grier is looking to just give up a whole boatload of assets for Schaefer. He is a 17 year old question mark, not some sure shot Cale Makar 2.0 or something. Sharks are in no position to give up a ton of assets for him. Its still a team very devoid of talent as the standings show.

It might. The last time the top pick was traded, it was for a 3rd rounder being swapped for a 2nd rounder and a middle six winger. I don’t think a deal asking for significantly more is going to get agreed upon.

Personally I would do it for 2nd, Dallas 2025 first and Oilers 2026 First plus capdump of Mayfield or Duclair

Perfect world we get Chicago involved(so they can get Misa) and Islanders get 2026 Oilers pick from SJ and 2026 Florida pick from Chicago plus capdump
