Sharks at IIHF Worlds 2025

Hockey Canada certainly seems to think Martone is a better player than Misa right now.
I'm not sure it's so clean cut. Hockey Canada definitely selects rosters with roles in mind. Maybe they want a depth RW, Misa is C/LW. I don't put stock in what this says about the H2H with Misa, but it is a feather in Martone's cap and gives him a chance to boost his draft stock, with little downside for him.

I am sour on the player because I think he's just as likely to become Slaf as he is to become budget Rantanen, but as I have said all along, if the pros in Sharks amateur scouting go with him, I'll trust them. It's clear to me that Grier has built a good team, possibly a great one.

I feel the same way, pretty much regardless of who they pick unless it's someone completely out of left field. Slaf's biggest issue is his brain while that seems like one of Martone's strengths so I think if Martone underperforms it'll look different than Slafkovsky.

Agreed. I’m intrigued by both Misa and Martone. I think we could use some speed in the lineup and I like the center flexibility (also just purely for trade reasons - having Misa and Smith gives you potential to, say, trade one of them for major help on D). But I’m also fascinated by Martone’s ceiling. Curious how he does at the tournament.

Well, if he’s a top line winger maybe having him on a line with Smith and, say, Chernyshov, maximizes his potential and helps with mismatches.

And he may hit his ceiling yet, who knows.
My thought as well, Smith to wing, Misa Center with Cherny on the other side could be special. That's our second line. Then find a stud for Macklin

That was Rasmus Sandin he beat. ♥️
Also love that he managed to score on that breakaway with a deke in tight and showed off great patience especially! It was one of the few things when nitpicking I think Celebrini needed to work on, finishing chances 1on1/in tight, you love to see it! What a tournament he is having and showing off to the world what a player he is!

For the record, I’ve never bought into the “Celebrini needs to work on his finishing” narrative that seems to be popular around here. I think that it will improve naturally as he gets physically mature.

This kid is playing with guys like Crosby and Mackinnon and looks like he belongs. That’s just a stupid thing to be able to say about an 18 (!!!) year old player. Recall, he is just four months older than Martone. He’s 20 months younger than Fantilli. Just ridiculous stuff.

Agreed. Sometimes it's very easy to forget just how young he really is considering he is already our best player and 1C. It was just extreme nitpicking from me on something I wanted to see him improve if anything, but you are right it is definitely going to improve naturally as he gets older.

How has Martone looked? Able to keep up with pace of play on the bigger rink?
He honestly doesn't look out of place and has looked pretty good in my opinion.

It's going to be so cringe when that worthless pipsqueak Hutson wins the Calder. People will look back on it as 10x more embarrassing than Panarin winning over McDavid.
