Player Discussion Shane Pinto (C)

Pinto got ripped to shreds here by some posters, when anybody who saw him play on the ice saw a dominant defensive forward, playing with offensively blackhole wingers. Although Amadio (great defensively himself) brings 30+ points and is the perfect 3rd line winger, Pinto really needs an offensive guy to play in Cousins spot.

Both Stutzle and Pinto can greatly benefit, as would the team, from having offensive wingers. I am sure Cozens-Pinto-Amadio line can work better but I don't know the long-term viability of them being successful given there is a distinct lack of playmaking in that line. Both Pinto and Cozens work great with set up guys.

If they have to blow their load, it should be on finding Stutzle a winger first and solidify line 1.

Option 1
<new top-3 winger>-Stutzle-Batherson
Tkachuk-Cozens-Greig
Foegele-Pinto-Amadio
Giroux-Halliday-Zetterlund

Option 2
Tkachuk-Stutzle-Batherson
Cozens-Pinto-<new top-6 winger>
Foegele-Greig-Amadio
Giroux-Halliday-Zetterlund

Ideally we get two top-6 wingers, but that's not feasible with Spence and others requiring contracts.

Back to Pinto, he is a great asset for this core and we should give him help offensively. It would do wonders for the entire line-up and their deployment on ice.

Giroux on the 4th line is crazy... The guy had 49 pts last year, put him with Pinto and Amadio, they played 285 mins together and had 59% xGF, 65% GF, adds some playmaking to a line that lacks it, and he's still a smart defensive player.

In my line-up, Giroux is a 3rd liner at best, 4th liner a la Corey Perry (who gets elevated/relegated as needed). DO NOT WANT him on top-6, that boat has sailed.

Giroux can swap with Foegele, but neither seems ideal but want to give Foegele an opportunity/more minutes away from line 4. G will still get important face-off assignments/PK. I am not fond of him on the PPs either, with father time he lost a step and his shots/passes were getting regularly picked up this calendar year.

Giroux is not in my top-6 for sure.

Perry is 41 years old and hasn't hit 49 pts in almost a decade, they are in different worlds at this stage of their careers.

I have no issues with getting Giroux out of the top 6, I think with his role reduced a bit he could have a bit of a more even season and not see a drop off towards the end of the year. But, he's absolutely not a 4th liner imo. He was effective on that third line, that's where we should be starting him imo. He's certainly an upgrade of Foegele or Cousins...

So it appears you like a modified Option 1 as below:
MODIFIED Option 1
<new top-3 winger>-Stutzle-Batherson
Tkachuk-Cozens-Greig
Giroux-Pinto-Amadio
Foegele-Halliday-Zetterlund

I don't have an issue with Giroux on the 3rd line at his age and presumed contract of $2M + bonuses; nor on the 4th line.

With Foegele, that would be an expensive 4th line compared to most other teams: $3.5M + $1.075M + $4.275M = $8.825M

Perhaps it could work out as the 4th line could be deployed in a 4-line rotation and either wear out the other team's top 3 lines (by playing 4 lines versus 3 lines) or feast on other team's poorer 4th lines, or a bit of both.

I wonder what Staios is going to do with MacDermid and his $1.5M contract; perhaps trade him or demote him to the AHL.

Perry wasn't deployed as a top-6 winger as Giroux in any of his last 4/5 seasons IIRC, nor do I see Giroux being a 49 point player any more. The offensive wheels have started to fall off as the season progressed. Still a G and can pot nice goals/set ups here and there.

Again, I have no issue with Giroux being on the 3rd line, but neither him or Foegele are ideal for Pinto if we really want him to produce more offence. G-man can still set up, but he is not getting any younger.

Ideally, Pinto gets a better winger, but the likely scenario is Foegele/Giroux for the upcoming season as Stutzle winger is priority.

Creates for a slow line

G also got time up top which skews the offensive numbers.

Look at the 3rd lines in these finals they move fastttt and have skill
