News: Shane Malloy: Canucks Are the NHL’s Worst Drafting Team

We barely pick, no wonder it's been awful.
Overall with where we have picked, it's not even that bad

Vancouver's drafting is pretty sproadic. From 2013-2018 they did very well: Starting goalie (Demko), Norris D (Hughes), #1 C (Petterson), 2C (Horvat), 2LW (McCann) and top line wing (Boeser). Getting that during a six year downswing you've absolutely crushed it, especially given they had zero 1, 2, or 3 OA picks (did have two 5s and a 6). However, they missed on two of those top six picks in Juolevi and Virtanen. In addition, they got f*** all from three years either side of that six year period.

Detroit and Montreal had spent several years outside the playoffs and not drafted one C as good as Horvat, let alone getting both Horvat and Petterson (and McCann). They didn't bottom out for nearly as long, but LA and NYR also didn't get a top C during their years drafting top 5. Combine that with a Norris winner at #7, and you've pulled the filled the three most difficult positions internally without a top 3 pick.

Given the pieces Vancouver got from their drafting during that six year period, they probably should have been able to build a contender. Developing, trades, free agent additions are another story unfortunately. I'm fascinated to see what direction they go next.

Umm... Larkin and Suzuki have both significantly outproduced Horvat over the last four seasons while both being solid both ways.

Listen to his interviews.

Malloy says this is independent of drafting position and the number of picks and extends back over several decades.

If Virtanen wasnt such a lazy dirtbag, he wouldve filled a Beauvillier type niche and not a complete bust. Podkolzin is also a niche player and not a complete loss, see this playoffs. their drafting recently has been average.

At least they are the best at something.

Another BS by media trying to trash Canucks organization for more click bait.

Next headline: canucks have worst washrooms and terrible snacks

We have drafted Wilander, E. PETTERSSON, Lekerimaki etc with mostly low picks. I think their drafting is fine. Not the best and not the worst but we also never have enough picks at draft anyways.

Looks like Hoglander would be the best non-first rounder in like a decade. Maybe Pettersson?

Forsling in 2014 would have been a solid inclusion but feels wrong to include him for the Canucks haha

I suppose it is surprising but In the interviews Malloy makes the case that it has nothing to do with draft position.

The Canucks scouts are just horrendous at ranking prospects.

Malloy comes with receipts.
Malloy is some average nerd living with his parents playing NHL video games. I dont trust anything he says.

Islanders are the worst in NHL history. Canucks are definitely up there though.
Not recently if you take the last decade into consideration
Canucks drafted: forsling, Mccann, demko, hughes, pettersson, Boeser, hoglander, podkolzin, e. Pettersson, willander, Lekerimaki etc.
They have drafted noteable elite players. Not sure how they would be the worst especially since they never drafted 1st or even 2nd overall at any time in the last 2 decades.

Your spot on regarding Larkin, he’s been there so long I felt he was much older (but he’s even in the years I referred to with Van). I was talking specifically about drafting though which is why I didn’t include Suzuki, who’s an absolute stud. Yet, while not drafted, Suzuki does fall into the ‘talent acquisition phase as he was acquired before playing games for Vegas’.

The point I was trying to make is drafting top centers is maybe the hardest part of drafting. On the surface (not sure what’s going on with EP), Vancouver absolutely crushed that. The next most difficult thing is drafting and developing a #1 D. Crushed that too. Yet, despite doing the two hardest things better than most teams- and without top 3 picks- they’ve completely botched everything else

Don’t forget the Vézina calibre goalie in Demko as well.

Seems they got all the hardest pieces along with a good 2nd line C in Horvat, a pair of 30 goal wingers in Boeser and McCann and a top 4 dman in Forsling.

All while trading away a lot of 2’d and 3rd picks. Also traded one of their firsts directly for JT Miller and another 1st for Garland (OEL etc.) at the draft.

I highly doubt this is the worst drafting team.

Suzuki wasn't drafted by the Habs. One of the few trades where Bergevin fleeced someone and one of the few awful trades the VGK made.

True, I forgot Suzuki was a Vegas pick, my bad.

I think the Devils are so bad at drafting that if they hadn't won the 2 lotteries they would still be competing for the 1st overall pick today. That's what happened after Hughes went down. Even at 2nd overall, or at 6th in 2015, it doesn't look like they were able to come out with even a helpful player.

3 fairly high 1sts in 2020 which was considered one of the deepest drafts of all time and it looks like they might come out of it with 0 players.

Vancouver drafted a 1C, 2C, 1D, 1G, and all above average at those respective roles, with a 5, 9, 7, and 36 overall pick in a 6 year span, which should pretty much auto-qualify them for top 5-10 in the league at drafting probably. They just got unlucky with injuries.

Thanks for clocking in Einstein. Is your name Jeff Patterson or Matt Sekeres?

I'll say this about the Canucks at least... their legacy of acquiring good players from Sweden is as good as anyone whether it's drafted players, or players plucked from other organizations.... I'm talking decades.

Conversely, the Habs havent had a significant player from that nation since mats naslund who I think was drafted back in 79.

Pittsburgh has sucked at drafting for much longer than 12 years lol.

Between 2010 and 2013 the Penguins pick Guentzel, Rust, Maatta, Murray, Jarry, Blueger, Sundqvist and 7 other guys who played a 100+ games. That's pretty categorically not sucking at drafting.

Who the hell was in charge for that?!

Rutherford. Which might account for people coming for Vancouver as the worst drafting team in the NHL...
