We give up our number one prospect with top line potential and future starting goalie for an overpaid, overrated middle six defender who can't defend. Astonishing trade.

Seth Jones for Huberdeau + 2026 1st

This is actually a good trade for both teams. Bedard gets his playmaker and the Flames are off the hook in just four years.

The overpaid portion of your critique is taken care of with the 50% retention. Knight could be that or could be nothing.

Why would Huberdeau waive to come to the Blackhawks? Or even Jones to Calgary come to think of it? Fresh media starts?

Anyways, that trade would just be gambling that the CGY pick is top 10 (if top 10 protected, forget it). Huberdeau has one more year and costs $1 million more. With Jones positional scarcity compared to an abundance of semi-productive wingers, I would not do it.

It's bad for Chicago.

Huberdeau makes more than Jones and has an extra year.

Chicago isn't trading a bad contract for a worse one.

lol yeah, Huberdeau is shooting double his career average, just to get to a 60 point pace with first line ice time.. turns 32 in the offseason and has 6 years left on a cap hit that's currently 13th highest of all players in the entire NHL

We live in a world where a 35 year old Chris Tanev gets a 6 year contract with a full NMC just so a playoff team can chase one year of a top 4 Righthanded Defenseman at a reasonable cap hit. Heck, Matt Dumba still secured an NHL contract this offseason. There's a reasonable chance Jones could get traded for nothing without retention, or for something decent with retention.

Dallas is the way imo.

Jones has that annoying NMC so even if there is a trade to be made, he likely vetos any non contenders... Dallas was another team he was angling for at the time of the CBJ trade.

Seth Jones (9.5M)

for

Mason Marchment (4.5M)
Matt Dumba (3.75M)

The difference of 1.25M cap hit could be a Chicago retention for a 3rd/4th, or Nils Lundkvist.

Or just straight up Jones for Seguin? I'd prefer to the first option.

Hawks lack wingers with talent now and within coming years

We have plenty of D coming in pipeline so It's easier to deal with overpaid F with kids coming along than an overpaid D with kids coming along

Not having to retain for 5 years also would be benefit to Hawks
If you don't retain you keep. So.....

Rataining $1-2M is reasonable

Retaining $4.75M over 5 years is not

I'm sure Chicago would trade Jones for Seguin.

Taylor Hall (50% retained) and Jones for Seguin and Dumba. Who adds?
