Post-Game Talk: Server migration = loss

They still trust Dustin Schwartz for reasons I don't understand.
I'm on board that train and I also do not understand. I don't know why people who don't have to work with him (stuck in the organization) seek him out.

He sure plays small and gets bumped off the puck a lot. One of the concerns I had with Skinner and Arvid as forwards is that they were not going to be strong on pucks and neither has been. On their respective lines they're the easiest players to get the puck from.
Yeah, but replacement you do "angry at short" because you want the 6'6" monsters from the 90s who couldn't skate and could barely play, but man were they violent and grabby.

This team's style is still to get the puck low to high, take a point shot, and hope traffic in front of the net can get a deflection or reboard. Unfortunately with Kane out, the Oil really only have Hyman who excels in and around the net, and even he's been far more ineffective there this year vs. last.

Despite leading the lead in shots, they don't really drive the slot. Instead their focus is shots from the outside and swarming the crease.

This works when you have Hyman, Kane, and Perry, plus secondary pieces like Foegele, Holloway, and Henrique across the top 9 who are all good at crashing the net. But this year Kane is out and the rest of the top 9 is smaller. Mix in a complete lack of physical play, and the Oil are super easy to box out.

I wish McCurdy had a % of team shots taken from location vs. purely absolute. I'd wager that one would have the Oilers offensive slot as ice-cold. (The Oil are possession beasts, so off that they generate more shot attempts in general, even if they're not particularly focused on getting the puck to that area. Going by % would control for that).

TLDR; For the offence the Oil want to play, they need Kane back and one more bigger body (Philp?).
But these scatterplots don't say much about what teams are trying to do against us which is a collapse low box. So that its simply difficult, and not a great plan either, to push pucks to the slot where all the opponents are. The Oilers have been fine at working this and getting opponents running around at times and timing runs into the slot. Look at all the Nuge goals lately.

Look at the Henrique goals lately. Right in the slot.

The Oilers are anything but a peripheral offense though and challenge the crease area a lot typically.
I don't agree the Oilers are super easy to box out and our scoring players are not. It is a problem for some of the smurfs we added like Skinner/Arviddson and frankly Connor Brown is dogging it again.

Hence why I have the unpopular opinion of add a forward. Someone who can score like Nelson. It would help so much.

The Penguins did come to play though. Their effort levels were insane. Great game by them
No it absolutely wasn't. The Pens controlled one period. They were pretty shit for two periods. The Oilers dominated the majority of the game. Since when is playing one period a great game? The Pens only one this game due to obvious goaltending disparity.

Correct the Pens really controlled the first period, but that was all they needed. The game was over after the first.

As for goaltending you are right. We seem to be on the losing end more often than not. Nedeljikovic sure looked athletic. Isn't he a guy nobody wanted?

I think it only looks like that because we are so ass at shooting from distance, that nobody tries or it's the most basic telegraphed releases that always gets blocked.

If we had more dangerous shooters, nobody would be talking about us being perimeter, but I do believe we look like that because we don't pose a threat as we don't have any pure snipers in our top 9 and it's been like that for years.

It's an issue we've failed to address or just gave up on (Lavoie) since the McD era.

They were brought in as cheap UFAs with one great trick. To find spots and finish McDrai chances from farther than 5 ft out. Both seem pretty useless if they can't do that. Arvidsson could still be that guy if given a healthy run. No idea about Skinner... is this how he played in Buffalo just with a worse shooting percentage?

Lol this is the guy who rags on a players like Arvidsson and C brown but thinks players like Anderson and Kostin are good. It’s hilarious really.

Didn't see the game but saw the 10 minute highlite package. Stew was not good, and the team got outworked. Looked like Kulak struggle a bit after a great run. This team tends to believe all the wonderful news clippings and media adoration heaped on them after a nice run, and then think the other team will just lie down for them, and eventually they get burned in a "correction". I think they'll come out gangbusters against the Hawks.

And I'll chime in with others that I don't like the new site format(colours).
