Seriously...why the big difference away from home?

It's not that much of an anomaly. Let's say you'd expect them to win 55% at home. The chances of them winning only 8 or less out of 21 would still be 9%.

Damn, you're right I just double checked. It's 0.0907629904.

But that is a pretty big anomaly no? I feel like you wanted to impress us with your probability skills. ;)

I mean, it's obviously more likely not to happen than to happen, but 9% isn't tiny. If there was a 10% chance of rain and and it rained, I wouldn't launch an investigation.

Who would you be investigating? God? (This is tongue in cheek and not meant as a religious comment).

I think the Rangers fans have something to do with it too. We get down on them REAL QUICK if they screw up. And sorta give up on the team if they have any kind of a let down.

I hate listening to our "Fans" when watchign the games...the booes piss me off.

It's not the boos. It's the lack of any sort of noise.

At first I thought, it's because corporates have taken over, but the Potvin chants are just as loud as always. People are still clearly there, they just don't cheer for the team, and it's pretty ****ing disheartening for me as a fan to hear.
I have to image it has some sort of negative effect on, the guys, especially the veteran players who've been there for years, when it was much louder

I am not sure, my guess is there is pressure to score that 1st goal at home and that leads to missed assignments, bad pinches, odd man rushes ...

I'll also say the renovations make the Garden really really quiet.

The Garden looks really nice, but the stupid bridges make it so nothing bounces around.

I agree with everyone saying a case of gripping their sticks too much at home. It seems as if they want to perform at the highest level possible and sometimes seem like they over-think things a bit too much on home ice. With AV and his new systems, it makes sense to me. On the road it's probably easier not to worry about these things as much , at least for this team.Hockey isn't really a sport where you want to be thinking and over-analyzing your moves, you want everything to be automatic and based on instinct as much as possible. Just my two cents

We were one of the best home teams the last few years.

The amount of games we've played is statistically insignificant to draw any conclusions from, to be honest.
The main reason is that while we were on home ice we mainly sucked and while we're away we played better. We just happened to play that way. It's not the ice, which has always sucked. It's not the fans, who have always been like this.

If we win all of our road games and win 1/3 of our home games, that's a pretty good team. Who cares where the wins are?

I think it's just a random occurrence, something that would even out in a larger sample size.

That said, if we won the same percentage of games at home as we do on the road, we'd be 26-19, and fourth in the conference. And I think everyone would be satisfied.

I think the team is beginning to turn the corner. After starting 2-6, we're 20-14-3. That's not world-beating, but it is a winning percentage equal to good Kings and Tampa Bay teams. Obviously you can't just wipe away the first eight games of the season, but I don't think our situation is as doom and gloom as some around here contend.

Because we're in awe of the "newly transformed MSG" every time we walk into the building. We just get mesmerized by the Chase Bridges and the Lounge we can't focus:sarcasm:

This has been a peeve of mine for a long, long time. And we literally run good players out of town> I'm convinced that fan reaction has influenced trades etc.

I think we have some of the best and worst fans in sports. It's really irritating to be at a game and you know that some fans are just waiting for a player to make a mistake so they can start booing. (most times it's a defenseman) I think it's the only reasom SOME fans go to the game in the first place.

I especially like the people who chant "Marty" when he's beating us. dolts

Maybe it has something to do with them having last change at home.

Not sure of anyway to even begin to come up with why that would be a factor.

This is definately a big part of it over the years.
I don't understand the concept of booing. Booing and heckling your own players is so counter productive it's ridculous. NY sports fans (Ranger fans right near the top).

People wonder why so many players suck here and go elsewhere and become good players. They wonder why established players come here and struggle. The meida and fans like to say "New York was too much for him to handle" instead of looking in the mirror.

Every Ranger game is the same. A bunch of dults yelling "Shooooot" everytime the point man gets the puck on the PP. They when point man takes a shot and it's blocked, same people yeall "He didn't have a lane...didn't he see that guy?" and they start booing.

I am a born and bred New Yorker, been going to Ranger/Met/Giant games for 35 years. The intelligence of the NY sports fan is VASTLY overrated.

I am not so sure about the crowd or the ice having much to do with it, I can get behind the theory they try to play too pretty at home.

Seems sort of like they do not come out with the idea that hard work speed, and desperation early is as important at home as it is on the road.

For example, does Richards just throw that puck at the net last night if he is at home or does he try to make a play? Does Zucc go on that around the ice mission at home or does he look to pass at some point during that play?

The ice? Really?

It is very simple, we think that the building is going to win the games without putting in the effort needed to win. The efforts overall are better on the road, period.

The crowd has been terrible for years. I haven't been there the last few years, but I was a season ticket holder for many years prior and noticed it then. There just isn't anything going on with the crowd and I'm not sure if it's because it's a lot of corporate people at the games now or what. Just too many people not paying attention to the game and plenty of empty seats during those "sellouts". Ticket prices forced me out.

While a visit to NYC is probably a cool thing for a lot of players, the big stage for hockey is HNIC ainec. Toronto and Montreal require a ton of attention from visiting teams. Radio shows, sports t.v. etc hang all over visiting teams. They come to NY and it's very low-key. The vast majority of sports media in the NYC area couldn't even tell you what team is visiting on any given night.

Most players also see their closest-to-home arena as being their biggest stage. As their families and friends are in attendance, and require attention.

TL;DR - I don't see NYC as the big stage in the NHL.

To the players it's a big stage. To hockey fans it's a big stage.

NYC, Madison Square Garden, playing against an Original 6 team. Combine all three and there's your big stage.

Lack of mental toughness. Brad Richards said earlier this season that it's harder to convert on the PP at home because they grip their sticks a little tighter and want to impress the fans. They seem to relax more on the road.

The crowd and the Garden atmosphere isn't the same as it used to be, but generally the fans will get louder if the team gives them something to cheer about. Unfortunately there's been quite a few slow starts at home so the crowd is already out of it from the beginning.

Rubbish. If that were true it would've applied to prior years, and even more in those years when the fans were more intense and if anything now there're less incentive to "impress the fans"

The real difference is how well off they are in their luxury country club. Same thing has happened to the Knicks

I though the infrastructure for the ice was renovated as well no ? I could have sworn that they were going to modernize the ice making plant as part of the renovations. So is the ice still bad or are people just talking about it prior to this season ?

And if anything it should be easier in Hockey to win at home as you get last change and dont have to work for the matchups you want

Not the fans. Garden hasn't been dead unless the team plays like absolute ****.

Not the ice. The other team plays just fine on the same ice.

Is it NYC? Too many distractions?

Is it the players? No motivation to come and play hard?

One or both of those is my best bet.
