I think time and space has kind of eased off some of the concerns that existed with Zubov at the time - defense, fitness, mental makeup, etc.

To his credit, it was when he was almost traded out of Dallas to his fourth team in nearly as many years that the light bulb came on. And from there, he maintained it for a good long while.

The Russian bias and the subsequent "ruining of him" miraculously disappeared once he stopped smoking and started playing a better overall game.

I doubt he ever stopped smoking. Craig Ramsey's article in the Players Tribune basically confirms Zubie smoked between periods his entire career.
