How good was he when playing for this franchise?

Do you guys think he would have a impact today if he was in prime?

What type of playing style did he have?

Perhaps the greatest flame. I am glad this thread has been added. Prime Makarov would be probably be the best player on the Flames today. It's a shame by the time he came over he wasn't really in his prime any longer though.

If you're curious about Makarov (or the other Red Army players) I recommend watching Red Army on Netflix. Lots of great interviews with those guys and all the stuff they went through trying to defect to the NHL.

Quite possibly one of the most talented players to ever don the Flaming C.

Very methodical, very purposeful player. Did nothing without reason - including shooting or passing he'd lose the puck because of being overwhelmed rather than making a poor pass/shot attempt. Very much a possession player, you'd give him the puck and he'd cover the entire ice with it before doing something - often very frustrating.

I think had he come over in his prime (mid-20s) he would have easily topped Kent Nilsson's point totals, and possibly Lanny's goal scoring record too if he shot more.

Actually, Johnny Gaudreau reminds me a bit of Makarov. Very similar play styles. JG is not as good, however.

Makarov was a terrific player and who knows how great he could have been if he had arrived in the NHL at 21 rather than 31.

Even at 35, with the San Jose Sharks, he had a terrific year and scored 30 goals after re-teaming with Igor Larionov.

It was criminal, he was not in the HOF until last year.

Random fact, he is the oldest guy to win the Calder :)
