So many excuses for Dubas when he was with Toronto, now you see many excuses for his time in Pittsburgh. The reality is that he is one of the worst GM of all time who has been gifted some of the most favourable situations a first time GM could ever hope for.

Not a fan of Dubas, maybe it's prejudice from his TML days.

However, I think a complaint against him on Guentzel trade makes little sense. Criticism of that trade has to be based on what specifically he did wrong negotiating that trade. Did he neglect discussing it with all possible suitors? Did he refuse a better trade? Sometimes the market just doesn't line up for you, so I'd need to know more before laying it squarely at Dubas feet.

It's crazy the leeway some people still give him. Now he's the president of hockey ops and GM so there's not the excuse that he was getting overruled from implementing his genius plan.

His achilles heel seems to be that he can't resist bringing in the biggest player on the market, regardless of whether or not it makes sense to allocate that much cap space to them.

He's really good at corporate speak so the suits from multi billion dollar ownership groups like MLSE and FSG fall in love with him. Those dark rimmed glasses were a great investment as well.

Whilst I think there are absolutely fair criticisms that should be directed at Dubas, this really misses the context that the Pens were already failing when he was hired, and everyone knows he was hired under instruction not to rebuild (which they needed to do).

Stop using logic. TML fans have to deflect their team’s failures to Dubas to make themselves feel better about losing. I’ve never seen a fanbase so obsessed with their former GM.

Do I think he’s done a good job? Not really, but I also know that ownership didn’t want to rebuild. The situation would suck for anyone.

Yea it was a very tough situation, but not dissimilar to Washington. They pulled off an absolutely brilliant retool and are now 2nd in the nhl, with guys like Leonard and Hutson still on the way.

Arent you guys still blaming Hextall for the mess that Dubas was left with (and thats why hes underperforming)

The "we can and we will" comment is one of the worst ones I've ever seen a GM make, in fact it might be the worst. You're their boss, not their friend. You just gave your advantage as the team to players. Then they get signed for as front-loaded and buyout proof deals as can even be signed within the CBA.

I like how Seravalli says he hasn't received any flack.

Fans criticized the f*** out of him. It's just the media that didn't and let's be honest, the media is trash across hockey.

Shitty articles, never ask a tough question.

Again, I ask where that reporter was who actually asked tough questions like 10, or 12 years ago.

Imagine what the complaints would be like if Dubas didn't sign Tavaras and he resigned in New York, then the TML continue their tradition of first round exits. There would be non-stop complaints of "why didn't he sign Tavaras! He has TML bed sheets!". Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Signing on to be GM of the Pens when he did, that 100% came with the acknowledgment that they were about to be absolute garbage. Can't look at a core that's 37yo+ and think "Oh man, we are sooooo getting a cup. Trade dem futures!"

Dubas is the analytics guy, so everything will work out in the end. The underlying numbers are good.

The list of bad moves is getting long. McGroarty for Yager, Karl, questionable signings in the past. No real accomplishments despite winning the lottery with Matthews.

I mean, anybody with two eyes could see how he mismanaged Toronto and know he was a bad hire, but for some reason a large part of PIT fans danced in the streets when he was hired.

Them and the statboy fans. Dom Lusczcynzcynsycysnyzycn has a Kyle Dubas poster hanging over his bed.

I like Dubas and I think he’s done well so far.

Hindsight is 20/20 so does everything work out? No.

But sound logic at the time of the transaction across all his moves IMO. Not something I could say for Hextall or late stage Rutherford.

Looking at Dubas' list of transactions in Pittsburgh, and there isn't a single one that looks like it favors the Penguins.

yeah, this is quite overlooked. He was never going to succeed under those instructions.

He was already falling off the cliff before Pittsburgh. I certainly wanted no part of him in EDM at the time
That cliff must have been really, really tall.

ChatGPT please sum up this article and thread:
Frank is salty from TO.
Leaf fans want to blame all their problems on Dubas instead of their core.
Dubas made some really bad trades/signings.
Pens are also rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic for 3 years.
End of story.

This doesn't make any sense.

So why did he trade for Karlsson? Why did he throw the highest offer at Graves as a UFA? Why did he re-sign Jarry and trade for Bunting who just signed a multi-year contract?

It seems everyone knew that the Pens were failing, except Dubas, who didn't. It's very fair to criticize him for that.

The last thing you do on a rebuilding team is to trade their 1st round pick for a 10M defensemen that was unmoveable the prior season. If the argument is he inherited a 'failing' team, then he's being fairly criticized for immediately trading that teams first round pick and giving out and/or acquiring older players on bad contracts.
