True, but immediately signing to disastrous contracts and trading for Karlsson just can't be overlooked. That sequence was GMing malpractice.

I thought he was at learning in the back end of his time in Toronto when he finally relented and moved away from early, ridiculous vision of what a winning team looked like to him.
 
Dubas is clearly in over his head. He messed up taking over Lou Lam’s team in TO and he’s making the Penguins’ present and future look horrible. Not too sure the fans in Pittsburgh will stick around. It’s such a mess.
 
Dubas is elite at appearing to be the smartest guy in the room until you analyze his moves with hindsight and realize he missing 75% and hits 25%.

Off the top of my head as Pens GM
- Jarry contract
- Karlsson trade
- Graves contract
- Trash return on Guentzel

Thats a lot of damage in like 1.5 years

Whilst I don't think trading for Karlsson was the smartest move, I don't necessarily think it was a bad move. It's definitely worked out for the Sharks but the reality is that he moved a bunch of players that weren't producing for a player coming off a great season on an awful team. The issue was I don't think Karlsson works in Sullivan's systems.

Ryan Graves contract looked solid when it was signed. Even though his production really wasn't there last season, he finished as a +10 and I don't think was particularly bad. He is shooting far less than his time with the Avs and Devils, so again, is it a player not fitting into a system?

I just don't think Dubas has been the disaster he is being made out to be here. Seravalli, from memory, was always extremely critical of Dubas in Toronto as well despite Dubas constantly adding toughness to the Leafs that all 'experts' claimed they needed. Dubas got the boot because he dare suggested the core be broken up.

Dubas comes across as very arrogant and Seravalli hated him since his Toronto days. I assume something happened between them. Maybe he asked for an interview and Dubas said no.

Karlsson was obviously not a great fit, Dubas should have had the foresight to know this.

No it didn't. Graves was visibly declining in the second half of the year in NJ. He was terrible. The contract was bad the moment he was signed. Anyone paying attention should have anticipated this.

Seravalli is a turd. He hates the penguins since he is from Philly. I don’t understand people act like he is relevant. He acts like he’s an insider but is awful.

Weirdly personal hit piece. Lots of TML chatter for an article ostensibly about Pittsburgh, not sure if he’s carrying water for someone in the leafs org or what.

He claims Dubas was immune from criticism in Toronto “for whatever reason.” Dude you’re the one in the media, why don’t you tell us?

That said, Dubas has been bad in Pittsburgh, but not sure it really matters. Team has been handicapped by the actions of prior GM’s, yet can’t tear it down to the studs until Sid and Geno are gone. In the meantime seems like ownership is happy to keep the arena full and sell more jerseys (Karlsson trade) while kicking the can down the road.

Not a Dubas fan but he inherited a team with old generational players in Crosby and Malkin. No way he was going to dump them for picks so he tried to build a team around them as best he could. He failed but he tried.

Karlsson was a bad move because Pittsburgh desperately needed defensive guys and had Letang. He needed to find the exact opposite of Karlsson.

Graves I just have to agree to disagree. I don't recall that contract ever looking good.

I guess what it boils down to with Dubas is, why does he seem to get so much benefit of the doubt? What has he done? I feel like I'm missing something but I'm not.
