You just said it yourself, there shouldn't be any reasons for this game to be tied. They have always play down to their opponents that's what they have in their DNA.What relevance does that have for this game? Toronto is head and shoulders better than Ottawa. Sometimes in games where you know you are much better than the opponent you have a tendency to sit back and wait for your talent to simply win. The Leafs do that too often. There is no reason for this game to be close midway through the second period. I have no doubt the Leafs will ultimately win, but sometimes winning masks bigger issues. They should have already put a stake through Ottawa's heart by this point in the game.
