I would’ve given him 1 or 2 years. He needs to show more.

He hasn't earned that kind of contract, but the reality of the league is that the floor for his extension was going to be about 2.5M on a 2 year contract, and then he would have had arbitration, and his QO would have likely been 3M or higher anyways.

We don't have cap flexibility going forward, so we need cost certainty with our pieces. If Greig does not play up to the contract, that's not as bad of a situation as Greig finding his game and needing 4M, 5M, or more on an extension, and us not being able to keep both him and Pinto.

After last night, I also suspect that this might be a precursor to a Norris trade, with the expectation that Greig and Pinto are going to play a greater role and they want to lock in Greig to prevent a situation where they traded away their 2C and Greig can negotiate from a greater position of strength.

Greig most likely would have gotten 2.5M give or take on a 2 year extension, and assuming he was good enough to be qualified, he would have been arbitration eligible for those final 2 years of team control, which means unless he is terrible he likely has a 3M+ QO. The only way this contract isn't worth it is if it is a Colin White type situation where by year 3 they wouldn't have qualified him at all.

The short of the contract is that they overpaid him in years 1 and 2 by about 500k in order to get cost certainty for years 3 and 4. I highly doubt the contract ends up being a steal, but I suspect that they will be happy to have the number set in stone for the back half of the contract, regardless of whether he maxes out as a 3C or does something more.

Thought slightly high at first, but his career pace to date is 30 points per 82 games, so 3.25 seems fair for both sides, could be quite good for the team, in the back half of the deal.

They will need to add a top 6 scorer, legit bottom pair D, and designate backup and 4th liners… but I think the cap is there to make it happen

He basically got the realistic best case scenario money-wise for himself without having to earn it production wise. This would be like him signing 2.25M x 2Y and then 4.25 x 2Y.

The only way this contract makes sense to me is if they highly value cost certainty. I think this contract might point to a Norris trade, either now, or later on in the season/offseason. If Norris is gone, Greig and Pinto will both have to sink or swim in greater roles.

Arguably, Pinto was overpaid as well. The story there was apparently that the team wanted less chaos. They wanted Pinto done rather than to leave themselves open to a potential offer sheet, or a summer of chaos with players unsigned.

Greig can play any forward position, tends to mesh well with most players and has a good 200 ft game along with being a pest. I doubt we will ever regret this contract. Only real question with him is how much he can produce, but at 3.25 mil it’s not like he’s gotta light the world on fire to be worth the money.

Dont know what he is. Obviously they do, but he doesn't stick out at anything and has played very small for the past few months

Not sure what to think. He has only 12 pts and at times has gone completely invisible in games. I guess time will tell but a bit much for a player that has a lot more to develop.

This contract doesn't give up any UFA years.

The way that I see this contract is that he was getting 2.XXM on a 1-2 year extension. On a 2 year extension, his QO is probably 3M+, he also has arbitration.

Years 3+4 are the floor for what he would have gotten via a QO+arbitration. The only exception would be if he is terrible and they wouldn't have qualified him. They overpaid in years 1+2 by 500K-1M per year to get that cost certainty.

Looking at our projected roster going forward, we don't have a lot of cap flexibility. I can see why it would be appealing to get cost certainty for a player like Greig, especially if they have plans to deal Norris, and Pinto isn't signed long-term yet.

They also have been playing Greig in a greater role this past month or so. That's likely part of what expedited the extension. While I don't think this contract is team friendly by any means, if they believe in him as a player, there is never going to be a cheaper time to lock him down than when he is coming off of a few months of bad hockey.

Grieg has never gotten more than 30 points, probably won't this year, and has never scored a ton at any level.
