Proposal: Sens - Preds trade Norris for Marchessault

Josh Norris has had 3 different shoulder surgeries since 2019,
2 surgeries in the past 22 months.
Norris has missed a significant amount of games in the last 2 seasons, but seems to be gaining strength in his shoulder and seems to be in a good place confidence wise considering the time he’s missed due to injury.
I would not do this trade from a Preds POV as there’s too much term left on Norris’ contract if his shoulder doesn’t hold up.
Norris’ cap hit is also higher then Marchessault‘s hit.

Would be a really bad look for Nashville/Trotz to trade Marchessault after only 15 games IMO

Marchessault signed in Nashville and has a 15 team NTC, odds are decent that Ottawa's on that list.
Also, Norris is a really important player for us right now. He hasn't regained his lethal goal-scoring (yet(?)), but his physical game and defensive play has been better than ever so far this season. If he starts ripping the puck again, it will address the need to add scoring anyways. He takes on a lot of our most difficult minutes and I don't think we can move him for a scoring winger.

I'd do the trade. Norris is good, but we also have Pinto to replace him. Marchessault would be a high quality veteran to add to the roster.

The risk on that Norris contract is likely too great for any team to trade for it. Good player when healthy, but that isn't something you can bank on and the cap hit is substantial. Signed through 2030.
If you're already stuck with it, you put the best face on it and relish the times when he's thriving and contributing. Yet it isn't risk you willingly take on if you don't have to, and no one else has to; most would pass, at least until more time has elapsed, the contract is nearer the end, and he's shown he can remain injury free.

Norris has looked decent and the shoulder is holding up. I doubt any team rolls the dice on that until he plays a full season without it exploding again though.
Norris looks really good and it doesnt look like he has let the injuries make him play scared.
That said... im still scared of his injury history. From a value perspective, it is something to consider as we desperately need centers

That aside I just don't think he's worth the contract. It seems like contract was highly anticipatory on a production growth that didn't have the chance to happen because of the injuries, so you're not only betting on him staying healthy, but also him rising to the level of player Ottawa thought he was going to become. I feel like this would become Johansen's big contract 2.0 for us.

Marchessault also has a NMC, so he can only be traded to begin with if he waives the NMC. THEN if he does, it's down to his NTC list. I don't know what made him choose Nashville, but I'm not sure one shaky month for the team is going to make him change his mind? I know the income taxes aren't quite face value, but there's probably a certain financial advantage to him staying in Nashville vs. Ottawa too?
That's a really big contract Norris has... I'm surprised he had the leverage to get that much. But anyway, while I'd do it from the hockey perspective, I think it's a moot point because Marchessault won't waive, and the Norris contract is just too much money to fit our #2C quest. That's like $52M remaining over 6 years, and with the injury risk, I'd be hoping I could find a cheaper/less risky solution than Norris.

Of all the long-term deals that Dorion signed (Tkachuk, Stutzle, Sanderson, Norris, Batherson), the Norris one was the most out of left-field.
He had a strong season that year, but he was on a real heater when it came to scoring one-timer goals on the PP.
It doesn't surprise me that no one wants to take on that risk with his injury history, especially in his first season back where he is looking more like his old self. I think a longer track record for production and health is a necessity at this point if Ottawa wants anything useful in return.
