This is my default assumption.

I'm still pleasant and cheerful when talking to almost anyone and assume that the specific person I'm meeting is pleasant and cheerful, but I tend to assume the worst from people in general.

While we're on the subject, and as an aside: were people in Ottawa always this hostile and angry all the time? Every time I've gone out in public since I've been back, everyone has a sour look on their face, and everyone is in the worst mood imaginable. What's going on in this city?

They heard that there was this guy who's just returned temporarily from Indonesia before moving on to the Swiss Alps, and they're jealous. :sarcasm:

I don't have any other games outside of Hearthstone, but I don't really play that.

Uuugh. Went over my 200gb internet cap. **** you rogers.

Hey,

This is one of the things I'm worried about. I'm moving to Ottawa in August and if you or anyone can please answer some questions.

How is the internet in Canada? Is 200gb the "norm" or is that higher than average? Are internet speeds pretty solid?

Similarly, how are cell phone plans? Here we have a family plan, 3 lines, unlimited calls, texts, data for around $200 I think, maybe a bit under.

I did some research and all data plans seem to cap at around 30gb.

Thanks!

Try as hard as you can not to get Rogers or Bell. Both are terrible and won't give fair prices/offers. The lesser known companies will offer better prices and bigger caps.

Canada is definitely not leaders in Internet and Phones services.

That's basically what I heard haha. Monopolies. Any suggestions for cell phone and internet companies?

If you go with Bell or Rogers for internet, you're not going to get a good deal. They are the two largest telecoms in Canada and don't really care.

The good news is that there are plenty of smaller companies who will give you a much better deal. I've personally had a good experience with TekSavvy. They have always been forthright with me, even when it comes to price increases (which they compensated by giving me 100 extra gb's per month).

I also still cannot get over the fact that beer or alcohol is soo much more expensive and a limited selection compared to here.

I am not positive how it is in Ontario, but here in BC there is a ridiculous amount of microbreweries with tons of delicious beer. I'm sure a lot of it gets sent out east (I hope, because it's fantastic).

The selection stores are wonderful... but I agree, much pricier than down South

That's just Ottawa. Maybe you remember it in a kinder light than it actually is.

Of course Toronto is much much worse lol

Unfortunately, you might need to apply that to pretty much any product or service. But yeah, internet and telecommunications is going to be a shock to the system. I echo the sentiments of those above me saying to avoid Rogers and Bell at all costs if possible. They will overcharge the crap out of you whenever they can and their customer service is terrible. The stability and capabilities of the internet will vary greatly depending on where you live.

For cellphone, I would suggest looking into something like Wind or Virgin. I personally haven't used them before but they're two companies I've heard positive things about concerning telecommunications. I have a feeling others in here would have a much better idea than I do though.

If you're in the suburbs or downtown, you should relatively be fine in terms of capabilities, you just might need to pay a bit more than you were expecting.

Where area of Ottawa do you have in mind?

EDIT: There is also a ton of good craft brew around Ottawa. Again, just probably more expensive than you would be used to in the US.

Funny, I always thought people were smilier in Toronto than Ottawa.

I mean Ottawa IS a government town. No need to look much further for an explanation.

Montreal on the other hand is awesome and I love it here. :D

Downtown Vancouver can be pretty horrible to the point that I wish I could duel weild and do hurricane strikes.

But as soon as you cross the bridge it's like heaven

Well, I'd say downtown Montreal isn't exactly pleasant either, but you can still make your way around without much of a bother. Most other neighborhoods are generally very friendly unless you go to the "ghetto".

Depends on if you're an anglophone or not :P

I dunno, if I had to guess I'd say that Montreal may be a bit friendlier on average, but its also full of cultural hipsters that enjoy the smell of their own farts. more so than other cities.

I do like Montreal though. Would live there over Toronto if i had to choose.

Ugh, it is impossible to find a decent part-time job that isn't during the hours 9-5 or only pays $10

Trying to moonlight?
Check the industrial areas, they'll probably have some afternoon/overnight/weekend shift stuff.

That or go to a temp agency.

I just need something consistent enough that I can have during school and still make ~1000$ a month, otherwise I cant get through school.

Army is an option, but if I go to the army I want to it be because it feels right, not because I'm broke and need to be able to take care of my parents.

Industrial area is too far from my house / campus as I don't have a car. It'd take me 50+ mins each way. I need to get good enough grades in my pre-reqs to get into the Nursing program, so I need some free time to study.

I wish I wasn't pressured into going to university with no idea what I'm good for in life when I was 17. Worst decision ever. Now I have a useless languages degree that'll only lend me to office work (which I hate SO much)_ and I still owe 7000$ to student loans, so no bank will even give me a loan for school anymore, especially after my dad got cancer and now my whole family is pretty worthless in the eyes of moneyed individuals.

Now I'm 24, no job, still not accepted into school officially (even though my grades are great. It's not 100%), and live with the folks, no car, single... Talk about a ton of fantastic attributes  at least I still have money from my last contract so I can at least pay for the pre-reqs classes.
