It sucks to have to tell a friend they have a problem but it's in their and your best interests to do it. Don't want to see them go down a certain path and know that you could have stopped them.

True, not telling them is enabling their behaviour and not doing them any favours. It is difficult though, most often people need to come to grips with their afflictions on their own terms, and telling them before they're ready to hear it can cause strife. At least that's what it was like for me. It's a damned if you do, damned if you don't kinda thing.

I think you made the right choice though.

I always liked the tangible keyboards, but im done paying for expensive phones and signing big contracts. I bought an android smart phone by a company called Blu on Amazon the other week, and it does everything I want it to do at a fraction of the cost of the name brands. Add that to a 30 dollar pay before account from Wind and Im more than content.

It really does look lumbering, yet each time I look at it I get a little intrigued. How can they make such a massive thing practical?

I have an older model BB still, on an amenable plan, and I'm loathe to part with it. I like their product and it's done me good. And I'm lazy. And broke. But still...that thing may as well be a tablet. I want to touch it.

I'm annoyed that I managed to finally crack the screen on my Galaxy Nexus
This phone is still the perfect size for me and thanks to xda still have all the most recent updates and it runs perfectly smooth still.
I want to stick with buying a phone outright, and just go with a pure Google Experience phone - but the next one that's rumoured (the Nexus X), is supposed to be a 5.9" screen. There's rumours of a 5.2", but I'm going to guess if true - it'll have reduced hardware specs to go with it too.

Don't understand why screen sizes have to keep getting larger on phones. Just give me something slightly thicker with a 4.7" screen so you can put a real sized battery in it. Smaller screen + larger battery = huge increase in use time per charge.

I've tried talking to them about it but it hasn't produced anything tangible in terms of results

Option 3 is probably the most realistic one but they are good, capable individuals who need some help and I can't help but feel like I'm running away instead of helping them

Then again, I have tried plenty...

Thanks for the advice though, it's time I take control of what I can

The one turning into an alcoholic I've been regularly telling him about it: he doesn't do a ton of stupid, hurtful things he's just always complaining about having no energy and hurting all over when he has a whole bottle of wine to himself in a night every night and it's draining as hell.
The pothead is just paying off student loans so he mostly stays in his room and tries to spend as little as possible so he's functional, it's just not a whole lot of fun.

I've had issues with weed abuse myself so I guess I'm trying to put some distance between it and me.

I guess the time to have a chat is today then

Simply tell them your life is moving in a different direction.

If you've tried to help them before and it came to nothing, then you're really just wasting your time. They're going to live their life however they want, and it doesn't matter what you say or do. If you stick with them for a significant amount longer, you'll only end up bitter and angry at them, and angry about how much life you wasted and about your own potential going down the drain.

It would probably be a lot better if you could find an apartment further away though. Being too close to them will still have an anchor effect (and it's likely they'll turn your apartment into an extension of theirs).

It may sound harsh, but life moves very quickly. Spending a long time trying to "fix" anyone usually doesn't work, and only ends in regrets.

You made an honest effort and it didn't work. Time to move on.

Can anyone help me here? I was given an iPhone 4s that is locked to rogers.
I'm not with rogers. Anyone know what would be the best cheapest way to get it unlocked?
And then a good company for a cheap 100 min or so plan?
First cell phone here. I don't know anything. And don't want to spend a lot.
Really appreciate any advice. Thanks guys.

Looks like an old 80s calculator and is totally the wrong shape/size. Wider squares don't fit well in your pocket, which is where most people carry their phones. I mean yes, phones are getting larger, but the elongated shape seems preferable for most consumers. Eh.

Huge BB fan here. I strayed once between the last Bold and the Q10, and I couldnt wait for my contract to be finished so I could go back to BB. I will absolutely get this new phone as my only complaint with my current Q10 is that the screen is so small compared to most other modern smartphones.

I have unlocked many phones simply by using free services on the net....pretty much just punch in "unlock cellphone" in google and follow the steps.

As for the plan im currently locked into a $60 a month plan from Bell which essentially has no limitation's on it for calls, internet use etc... Not sure what's out there now though.

Ya, like he said, just type it into google and there are a ton of free websites. As for a phone company, I pay
$25 a month with Wind, and have unlimited everything. Signal is almost always perfect, too.

Blackberry is similar to Dany Heatley.
It was great in 2007 and isn't worth anything anymore.

Meh, it just seems like it's the popular thing to hate on BlackBerry now so no one will give them a chance. I have a Q10 and I love it. Having used all other mobile OS's before, I can safely say that BB OS10 is the best I've ever used, the hub might be the most useful thing on the smartphone market. Of course now Apple is trying to replicate the hub and they'll be praised for coming up with it even though BlackBerry's had it for like 3 years now...

A ton of people I speak to love Blackberry products

They just aren't as sexy in terms of general consumer products so they finally decided to pull the plug on that and focus on what they are the best at and get a lot of recognition for which is focus on industry

They'll rebound

Yeah, I think they'll stay pretty steady at this point...
Their biggest mistake was to try to break into the consumer market with the Pearl and the Curve, it was basically downhill from there.

I've got a Z10 through the week because of work - not a huge fan of it compared to the way I've customized the launcher on my Android, a few UX quirks to me that don't make a lot of sense (in terms of consistency of what happens with a swipe up or a swipe left or right on certain screens). But it is a nice phone to look at... would prefer to have a physical keyboard though for email. Which the Passport actually looks like it'll meet that requirement. Depending on its thickness should still fit into a pocket relatively easily unless you're wearing skinny jeans - it's not that much bigger than a Canadian passport in terms of height and width.

Type. Dur.

BB needs to fully embrace Android apps. It will help them greatly. I do not like that I have to get a third party app to download them onto my BB.

Apparently, when they launch the passport, they're also announcing a partnership with Amazon to be their Android store.

I have a Z30. It's a perfectly fine phone for what I need. I'm not a bells and whistles guy.

Blackberry hate is so passe. They made a lot of mistakes in not understanding that Apple and Samsung were going to be real competitors and they missed the boat.

At least with my BB, I don't have to worry about my pictures being hacked. Especially the saucy ones...

I have an iPhone 4, my contract has expired with Virgin and I'm now month to month. Obviously they are on me for upgrading, but then I have to get a whole new plan because apparently the plan I renegotiated with them 3 months ago cannot be transferred to a new phone. They want almost 20 dollars more per month for the same services they are providing me with now.

Nothing is particularly wrong with my phone, but it is slowing down, and doesn't run apps (especially facebook and google maps) with any speed. I'm not a bells and whistles guy either, so I've just lived with slower performance for a while. It sucks that if I want a new phone I have to pay more per month, considering I've been with them for 6 years and been through 2 full 3-year contracts with them.

Outrage, I tell ya!

I've considered Wind and the like as an alternative, but I spend a lot of time in Rural Ontario and I've always had good reception with Virgin, who uses Bell towers. Anyone living in the Valley or otherwise using a Koodo or Wind type service?
