Gaudette is soft. That Nylander goal he could have easily stopped him driving the crease he had plenty of time to anticipate it

I'd be okay with scratching him a few games
Somebody should have nailed Nylander when he goes in front of the net like that, but it looks like all the Senator players were watching whomever their man was that they were supposed to cover. Players seem to be able to walk in from the side boards lately, but looks like it's a systemic kind of thing (that’s the way defensive play is structured?).

It's good that recently this team has found a way to recover after falling behind.

I wonder what will happen with Mitch Marner this summer.
Marner is going to be interesting. Top 10 scorer with pretty much as unenviable a playoff record as is possible.

Think about it: the Senators have won more playoff rounds than the Leafs in the Matthews Marner era.

Idk why a gm would be rushing out to give Marner money. Maybe a guy whose team has been outside looking in for years but I can't see a playoff team wanting to sign that track record

Marner will get a shitload of money and a lot of attention because there really isn't anyone else available who can do what he does.

Just look at all the insanity over Rantanen. Yes he won a Cup, but everybody knows that MacKinnon and Makar are the drink stirrers on that team. This way you don't need to give up any assets for him. He's going to get significant attention from a number of teams, and unless the Leafs make the conference finals or something I genuinely think he's gone. In their desperation Leaf management may just move on on their own.

He will get a shitload. I agree. Just glad it's not going to be us.

The only clue I've seen in years that the Leaf brass might understand hockey is asking Marner to waive so they could get Rantanen.

Man the Leafs are a soft team, they are never going anywhere in the playoffs with Mathews, Marner & Nylander being so soft. We saw who stood out at the 4Nations, it was Tkachuk not Mathews. It will be the same in the playoffs, they are way too soft. Knies needs to step up for them to go anywhere. Something is going on with that team.

As important as skill is, size and playing big will never be taken out of the equation for winning in the playoffs.

We went pretty far on skill in 2017 with Karlsson having one of the best playoff runs in modern history, but we were also playing a suffocating system where everybody bought in. We still had issues with physicality that lead to them dressing Chris Neil, who was no longer an NHL player.

This feels a bit like 2017 in that we have everybody buying into a tight system. I don't know what kind of shelf life Green will have as coach, because sometimes coaches like that don't last long, but it is starting to feel like a special year.

I guess the difference between this and 2017 is that it didn't feel special and we weren't even a shoe in for playoffs until almost the last game of the season. It's only during the playoffs when Karlsson elevated his game that it started feeling like something could happen.

I think it says a lot when Leaf management, in the face of repeated failure, refuses to make any real change while Steve Staios, watching his team improve and fight for a playoff spot, decides to move a core piece knowing full well the chaos it could cause.

Which teams have the cap space to sign him? I think he leaves Toronto.
Columbus has a boatload of space for him and has already progressed at building a good core. They have Monahan returning for 4 more years and the pieces to deal to get better at G and D should they want to go that route. I see the Jackets as a bidder (and maybe a trade partner so they can offer 8yrs)

Everyone has a NMC, not a whole lot they can do.

And what type of coach is he? You're mistaking shouting after his players and defensive hockey

Finally, "we are a team", incredible job by Staios, he has earned my trust

- Coaching staff that knows there's 2-way on the ice
- Real N.1 goalie
- Partner for Chabot (the lost of asset wealth for that falls on Dorion)
- Cozens, younger and healthier than Norris, very intriguing potential
- Zetterlund (even if he doesn't have a big role yet)
- That 2024 draft looks much better than 3 previous drafts
- He didn't mortgage the future to improve the team like Dorion used to do

But overall it feels that this team is just much more "professional" than before

Sure he won't in GM of the year (Caps) but he should get some consideration/recognition. He has literally saved this rebuild that was on the verge on failure.

Hopefully boys stay hot Tuesday.

I rather lose to the Leafs than Habs

Most annoying fan base ever

Pierre Dorion said on the radio the other day "I hope the Habs win" when talking about their upcoming game vs Florida.

I don't know but it felt so wrong.

The highlights show a bunch of different lines. Was green putting the lines in a blender?
Certainly by the end of the game he was moving guys around to match up against the Leafs. Highmore out with Cozens and Pinto, and Giroux the same. Brady, Timmy, Gaudette all saw more bench time towards the end of the game. And Pinto was on the ice for draws in the D zone at times, then off once the zone was cleared. Really, well executed game plan for the most part.

I feel like it started to feel like something special could happen in 2017 when MacArthur unexpectedly came back right before the playoffs. Obviously nobody was predicting 2OT Game 7 in the ECF, but I liked our chances against Boston in the 1st round.

No, they never changed much at all. Always after a PK or PP they blender a bit, but lines never really changed, unless someone got stuck out there.

did they show Giroux's breakaway? you can get a full game replay off Sportsnet
That breakaway looked find of funny. I don't know how long Giroux was on the ice beforehand but he was moving really slowly, the guy behind him was moving twice as fast.

Next year I would sign him to a 1 year 2.5 million dollar contract. The wheels might be coming off.
