I think the budget screened candidates out well before the interview process. I don't think salary was the deciding factor between Smith, Leaman or Mann, and I doubt the cost of Martin or Bowness would be much more expensive if at all. Roy might have commanded more though.
that's a rational take

I remember vividly Canada Day 2014, when Murray did his presser. He went on a decent rant about how he felt about the media harping on the budget. I mean here he is, trying to build a competitive team while dealing with Melnyk and now people are starting to pile on about money? I'd be pissed as well, don't matter if I'm right or wrong. I don't need my players having no confidence in management and ownership.

That was the first time I noticed how sick he looked as well... We found out just how bad it was not long after :(
Poor Bryan Murray. I listened every chance I got and was always my favorite interview. Maybe a little too honest at times, but I appreciated the candor.

I don't mean to imply he was fully open about budget constraints, but more that he didnt seem to be in complete denial of it and offended at the suggestion. I think it would serve them well to be more open about it, just imo.

Joking aside. I mean the guy is a players coach apparently and we're going to have a young team of nobodies. Maybe he is not the worst choice. I don't even care who the coach is but I have one question......

Why is a head coach named before a POHO?

Because Eugene is the one with his hands on the steering wheel.

Dorion is doing enough as GM, having to defend Melnyck and his obvious complete fragile ownership of NHL hockey in canada (which is like screwing up an ice cream stand in Cancun) he shouldn’t be doing.

When it comes to any money question - just say ‘if we win and have success everyone will benefit and be happy. And I want to make Ottawa the happiest fanbase in sports.’

Good hire by Dorion, turning the team around is more about fixing management and the overall front office - but so far we have a young coach with young players and no expectations which was needed.

One thing Dorion needed to do this summer was lower expectations to ‘we’ll do our best’ and none of this ‘we’re a Cup contender and can compete with anybody’ nonsense they’ve been saying for the last 10 years.

Let’s just see come compete, someone take a puck away in the D zone once a game - and the fans I think will be happy to watch the rebuild.

Assuming you've missed Dorions presser where he discussed what to expect?

Okay cool, is he going to play net for us? Or is Melnyck going to handle that too?
No, but that's the expectation he set for the team at his end of year presser.

1. Compete for playoff spot next year.
2. Make playoffs for sure the following year
3. Contend for cup the year after.

I don't think he means this, but this was what he stated to all the media and fans.

This sounds like a F-YOUS to the fans

He wants to make the playoffs this upcoming season. Dorion is and will remain a moron.

People still thinking that this was not a misquote... ? LOL. - fake news

We all know Dorion cannot speak publicly with bumbling. There is no way he meant we are going to be a playoff contending team this year.

Stage 1 - tear down
Stage 2 -draft/ rebuild. <— you are here
Stage 3 - contend

That is how I see it

Good luck to him. I doubt they come anywhere near the playoffs next season but hopefully it's another learning yr & they continue to add & find a few more young guys that can contribute as much as White & Tkachuk did at the NHL level. I also hope they continue to ship out the older players for more assets next season. I guess the next thing we have to look forward to is who DJ hires to be assistants & the draft next month. Doesn't every team have the objective to make the playoffs each yr & when they don't they go back to the drawing board to make plans to get in the next yr? IMO Ott will probably have a couple of yrs of growing pains before contending for the playoffs.

Its the baloney factory in action. I think he knows it is not likely. And if he really does not know that it is not likely, he is more than a BS'er, he is a buffoon!

Yes next up are the assistants and the draft. I suspect Dorion has asked him to consider Kelly for one AC position. After that I suspect the options are all his.

Is Mann going to return as the HC of Belleville? If not, I wonder if that job will go to Kelly? Also wonder if the goalie coach keeps his job here?

I read somewhere that Groulx was being kept as the goalie coach. I think Mann will be kept in Bellville as the HC; however, maybe he wants to be considered for an AC in Ottawa. Kelly as an HC seems to be too much too soon for him. An AC position seems about right at this time for Kelly.

The playoff thing just seems like a cliche hockey psychology thing.

Like noone is going to start the year saying "we aren't going to make the playoffs".

They always go with "we want to make the playoffs."

It's obviously a message mandated by Gene to sell seats. Nobody believes this team is going to be middle of the pack.

I listened to DJ's interview on the drive and one thing that struck me is how he mentioned Melnyk as being someone he has to work with.
