There is almost no benefit, outside the obvious top pick, to this team being near the bottom of the league. This team has to get past that. The easiest part of this roster to fix is the biggest problem right now - bottom 6 forwards and bottom 4 d-men. It's not ****ing rocket science, just get it done.

There is no other solution: we suck and will continue to suck until the team can spend more.
And even then, that's far from a guarantee of anything because they need to spend wisely AND be very lucky.

Well... first goal against Anderson was a toughy, might have been tipped through Methot.
Second goal (gwg) was a defensive breakdown on a PP, clear shot and found that short side spot that seems to get Andy every time.
Third goal, not much he could do. Challenged the shooter on a bad turnover at the blue line who was allowed to walk in, and then the puck stopped dead on Karlsson's skate but no Sen picked it up in time.
Fourth goal, that was definitely a half hearted save attempt - I think even he had given up at that point.

Meh, another very young player that will be mishandled because we can't afford to give the young'uns the veteran presence they need.

That's all I want, I want to believe this team can be good and want to think they can win on any given night. They Senators don't need to win the Stanley Cup for me to be happy, they just need to not suck so god damn much.

I agree.
Their weird thing is it's usually the other way around for most teams. A lot of teams don't have that #1D.
Sens have a #1D, still think they need a #1C and Anderson in years past has shown to be a #1 goalie.
#1C and some bottom pairing and scoring depth this team would be okay.

Didn't we get Karlsson at 15th or 16th & Ceci around the same place & Lazar? What about Hoffman & Stone who we got in the 5th & 6th rounds? The problem is that some of the guys we thought were going to be much better simply have not panned out & have turned out to be worse. Cowen, Wiercioch, Chiasson have all under performed badly, Zibanejad still hasn't turned into the #1 centre everyone thought he would by now & a few other guys have been up & down all season. Is that scouting or development or coaching or the player simply isn't good enough is anyone's guess. Wouldn't it be nice if Paul & Lindberg were to exceed expectations?

Mostly because this team's budget (yes I know a lot of teams are on a budget) can't accommodate players like Karlsson and Ryan while also paying for the veteran presence the younger players need to realize their potential.

The argument is very simple
If the team had 6 million dollars to spare they could afford to make a trade that didn't involve Colin Greening and/or Cowen
Right there, that would be a huge bonus because it basically would allow Murray to make a trade

The Draft this year is deep... Maybe better that last year's with the exception of the top 2 picks from last year.
The recipe to mediocrity is being mediocre. Mediocre finish, mediocre draft position, less than the top end talent being drafted. and on it goes.
We have a lot of holes. Gaping holes. There is no quick fix thru trades. Even if we got a talent like Drouin we would have to give up some strength we have now to get him. I hate being mediocre and settling for that. To change that you need to be bad for a couple of years. The Hawks were brutal then they got Keith, Kane, Toews in the draft. How did Pittsburgh get Crosby and Malkin. How did Washington get Ovi.
Through a combination of trades and high draft picks we can change it too. Staying in Neutral isn't going to get it done... rant

Ceci is so skiddish in his zone. Probably comes from never having a reliable partner and being thrust into a terrible situation. I think I've said it before but he is the Sam Gagner of defence. Super talented. Thrust into the NHL. Spent most of not all of his rookie/sophomore shifts hemmed in his own zone. Now he's stuck. Panicking.

Have you ever seen 4 guys bunch up like that at the blue line trying to defend on the pk. They totally gave up both side boards and didn't challenge to stop the entry up the middle they just kept backing up until the puck was in their zone and then it was an easy pass to a guy behind them. Much too easy and Andy wasn't up to the challenge either.
Cameron doesn't know how to leave well enough alone. The 3rd line was fine with Pageau, Lazar and MacCormick but no Cameron has to play coach and puts Smith there ruining the line.

3 of 16 is also no where near half. not even 20%.
