Ottawa's forward roster is surprisingly good. They just need to fill out their defense a bit. Right now it's just Chabot (who is getting ground into dust through coaching mismanagement) and Sanderson who looks like the real deal.

They need some Marinos/Siegenthalers to fill out that D-core and get everyone slotted where they need to be (which is easier said than done). Right now that D is a two man show. Signing Lyubushkin last summer would have done wonders for them. I could see them being pretty aggressive in making a push for Severson this summer because they are sorely lacking on the right side. Although their cap situation is not great at the moment.

And yeah, goaltending is the unicorn. 20 teams in the league need a goaltender. It's not a NJ thing, this is just how it is when you don't get a Hall of Famer for 20 years.

They have their defensemen. They just need to get more miles on them. A couple more years and it'll fill out.

They are like us but with Hughes, Nemec, and Bahl all playing on the NHL club.

I have certain issues with Fitz but how he’s built the defense and the AC hiring are looking stellar.

Shero went to war in 2019-20 with a revamped roster with John Hynes yet again, assisted by Nasreddine and Rick f***ing Kowalsky for some reason.

Kowalsky one claim to fame was coaching are almost never good AHL teams.

He got hired as an Assistant Coach the Bridgeport Islanders in 2021-22 though, so that’s nice.
Don’t forget being bamboozled by Cory’s end to the year before, as if the first 9 games of that year and last 100 before that didn’t count. And then all the egg on his face having to waive him within 6 weeks and maybe 6 or 7 games? That was embarrassing on Shero’s part. If he wanted Cory to stay then he should have started the year with some other guy-Schneider as his tandem. Not Schneider-Blackwood. The argument was that Blackwood earned his spot on the team with the way he played the year before and I don’t disagree with that, but someone else should have been brought in and it would have been Blackwood up in November when the highly predictable waiving happened instead of Louis Domingue. I remember wanting Lehner at the time and Chicago got him on a one year deal. I never took us seriously coming into that year because of goaltending. 33 year olds that have 3 consecutive poor seasons, on top of hip problems very rarely bounce back for a full season. And when they do it’s often times just one year. Though I’m glad we waited an extra year to buy him out as it helps us more in 2024-2025 when he’ll be off the books.

And Tricky Dick is absolutely worthless. He was I think the longest tenured coach in the organization. He had been here since 2006 as the Trenton ECHL head coach, back when we still had an ECHL affiliate. Then he was promoted to head coach of the AHL team in 2010. Very big shoes to fill in that role of Johnny MacLOSER. He stayed the head coach of the AHL Devils for 8 years before being promoted to NHL assistant.

It was absolutely mind numbing as well on Shero’s part. Shero cleaned out a lot of Lou’s pets and puppets in the organization at almost every level there was and yet he promoted this worthless jackass to NHL assistant? What was he thinking? At the very least he could have kept him on as AHL head coach, but what did he ever do to deserve an NHL promotion? I can’t believe a GM that wasn’t Lou actually gave him an NHL job of some kind. It’s preposterous. And even Lou hasn’t given him an NHL job (yet). Nope. He opted to bring in Johnny MacLOSER (who seems to be killing it as usual coaching the Islanders power play) to fill an assistant slot instead and Tricky Dick is still in the minors.

Interestingly enough, I think the only other full time coach that Lou hired that’s made it through both Shero and Fitzy is Sergei Brylin. I’m pretty sure he’s the longest tenured coach in the organization. We might have guys that are special assignment coaches or advisors or consultant, whatever. Are Jacques Caron and Jacques Laperriere still listed as special assignment coaches/consultants? They’re not full time and haven’t been for about 1.5 decades now.

Again, Jim would absolutely love Nico as a player if he was drafted under Lous reign. Would be nonstop praise. Nico is literally an elite prototypical Devil.

I probably missed it earlier in the thread, but I did enjoy the unacknowledged Orange Cassidy appearance prior to a faceoff. Always amusing when my two nerdy fandoms collide, like when Kevin Owens showed up unexpectedly at the draft and Bruce Boudreau turned into a 10 year old kid.

Umm... who?

2nd round pick #51 overall that had no North American expirience until Albany vs #1OA coming out of the Q?

Good analogy... almost as good as McKinnon.
Not sure what MacKinnon has to do with anything, but Nico was a 1C as a teen when Patty was playing in Albany.

A fan upset that a likable young man looks to be making the jump to stardom. Sad! 👎

We have a ECHL affiliate again, we just don’t call them the Devils, the Adirondack Thunder have been that since 2017-18.

But we had nothing since 2010-11 because that’s how much we cared about our minor league system.

You're right. Nico really is a Lou era/dominant Devils teams type of player. He's got a lot of Travis Zajac qualities, but offensively he blows Trav out of the water. He's also got some Scott Gomez qualities, though he's definitely a better defensive player than Gomer was.

I always thought Trenton folded because they couldn't go on without Kowalsky after losing him when we promoted him to head coach of the AHL team!:sarcasm:

How does the Sens coach still have a job? He played Chabot for 31 minutes last night! Why?!
He's always been one of the favorites for first coach to be fired this season, although they did just extend him either at the end of last year or during the offseason. I can't remember which.

Lou's old ass would have sprinted up to the podium to draft him. I'm not sure why Jim has to play this game.

Contrarianism is fun and all, but it's getting a bit silly. Let loose and enjoy this, it's been fantastic. Much deserved after a decade of dismal.

For some reason I have a feeling Lou probably would have went to Patrick if he had that pick, but there's not a whole lot of shame in that, only because at the time it didn't seem so insane to take Nolan Patrick over Nico Hischier. In hindsight it would have been disastrous though. We would have been in rough shape if we took him with that pick.

A lot of people here have lamented about not taking Makar that year, but it's really the Flyers that should be lamenting over that one. They had the second overall pick and got nothing out of him. Patrick's injuries were already a meme at the time and it no doubt tanked his stock at the end with Hischier passing him and being the heavily favored 1st overall in the last weeks before the draft.

So yeah, I do think Lou might have chosen Patrick, but let's just say Nico were a UFA in 2024 and Lou was still GM of the Islanders next year. I think Lou would HEAVILY be praying and hoping that Nico ended up going to the market so he could sign him.

I think Lou would pursue Nico much more strongly than he did to Gaudreau last year. Nico is definitely the kind of player Lou would particularly value, although I'm not sure you'll find any GM's (as dumb as many of them are) that wouldn't covet Nico Hischier.

Would you be willing to say what would make you go, "ok this is good, I'm happy with this."

Is there anything short of a cup? If so what is it? I promise, whatever you say won't be met with push back from me. But a defined line that needs to be crossed will probably do everyone a lot of good. That way we know, no matter what good happens, not to expect you to be happy until player/team hits X. No one will be surprised anymore.

Man what a thriller.. Any news on Vanecek yet (don't have the time to read the whole thread just yet)? November just started and Devils have once again injured both their goalies, can't make this shit up. The silverlining is we got to see Schmid handle himself under pressure.

Ottawa's offence did not disappoint, pre-game I thought they'd have to score at least 4 to win. Incredible effort by the team (and Schmid) to survive that OT PP.

There's been a lot of back and forth between the fanbases on who has the best young talent, so I'm happy they managed to win this one and keep most of their top guys off the score board. I think that Ottawa team is gonna be a dominant force in the league once they get their D in order / more experience and better goaltending.

I think Forsberg is fine. Their defense is terrible though, similar to Devils in the previous years.
