I would say after looking at what happened with Jokerit and the national team respectively under Jalonen and Paskamäki, we can conclude that Marjamäki was indeed Paskamäki. Just a hypejob pencil pusher who can work a rigid system to win something in Liiga and that's about it.

Jalonen had the same critics before the tournament, actually even in his previous stint as head coach after Vancouver 2010. There was lots of talk that nobody wants to play the "slow" and rigid Jalonen hockey and Jalonen got the blame for why NHL stars didn't join our team. Marjamäki actually got more NHL stars to join last year. I wouldn't rule him out yet as a coach.

No.

Vorobyov is the reason this Russian all-star team scored zero goals
I thought players shoot the puck and not the coach? Same story after every match, Finland wins because opponents star players were tired or badly coached or whatever.

No, it's because Finland is good. Nothing explains Liiga all-stars outplaying NHL-superstars except the fact that we played amazing hockey as a unit.

This is why you should never count Finland out, we have seen it so many years before. No matter how weak our roster looks like, we always have a chance to win.

Again to all of you guys: This is our D or F team at best. This team doesn't even have KHL-players and best Liiga players, just let that sink in. Victory for Meidän Peli and teamwork vs individuals

No. It just is so in the game of hockey when you are one down/up on a deciding game. It's just how it goes and even this tournament has proven it a dozen times already.
No, it's not. Sometimes it's the coach. Sometimes it's the players getting a tiny little bit more comfortable. But it is far from being a rule. And that is not even my point.

Finns stopped passing completely after the goal. Their passes weren't intercepted or covered. They stopped trying to pass. What they were doing until then was pressing and hounding every puck and making very simple short and safe passes well within their skill range as top athletes to make things work for them. After the goal they completely stopped all that. That is not the same as ebb and flow of the game, which is what you are talking about. It is a different thing. It is a coaching mistake which Jalonen luckily escaped.

The last ten - not five - minutes were all on Finnish coach for telling his guys to stop skating and passing and collapse instead. Finns did everything wrong in the last ten minutes and it started right from the face off after the goal. Finns had nothing on Russia - nothing except the effort and grit and they gave it up for the second half of the third.

Finland also had a better coach.

No One can say that "it was only one game" se won Canada, Sweden and Russia without top NHL players. Yes we lost to Usa. It is 3-1 in 7game series. Se have one left...

Line chemistry is so damn important. You can neutralize any "big" name just by playing a poor line chemistry-wise. That's why lineup decisions and experimenting with them is so important.

Jalonen seems to understand this. He also is clearly incredibly intelligent when you listen to him.

When in doubt, trust intelligent people, especially with a history of success.

Is it a mistake, though? It worked out and Russia didn't really get many dangerous chances. What if Finland had kept pressing and Russia scored on a counter attack?

Please learn how to read.

Search this thread for my posts. You will see, in big letters, "Congratulations Finland, you were the better team."

That being said, the reason Russia scored zero goals when it mattered is entirely the fault of Russia's incompetent coach who iced probably the worst line combinations in Russian history.

See the Russian Roster thread for my well-documented thoughts on these awful line combinations that persisted for the entire tournament, and the awful Russian coaching in general.

I don't know what game you watched, but other than Vasilevsky and maybe Kaprizov, the entire team looked like ****. Less life in it than in a dead elephant. Completely gutless performance with all individual skills out the window.
I just want to say "good game" and focus on a few positives esp. Vasilevsky. For me it wasn't a total disaster nor embarrassing. The Fins played a tight game with great goal-tending. Every team can lose to the Finns without shame (which may be proven this year!).

For non-Russia fans it continues to be a blessing that they never seem to "get it together" when it matters. The team is scary af when you look @ it on paper. We can appreciate your disappointment, but I don't think you need to crucify these players for a 1 goal loss in the semi's.

Aww...oooh! :3 Jukka. :D

I cannot argue with that. Although Jalonen did make a mistake after the goal and he was quite lucky to escape with it. Russians generated a lot of chances in the last ten minutes.

But as I said earlier. It's one game. Finns are always good at those. Seven game series? Russians win, period. It is completely irrelevant to the result today, but it is important for the Russian fans to understand in their state of defeat. That was a good team, a better than many Russians have iced. It wasn't a well coached team but not many Russian teams have been since CCCP. But the basic structure is sound. There is easily enough talent there and lately this year included I think there is more of team first attitude as well. It is terrible to lose, and we'll see how my Canada does later; and you might want to switch the coach, too - but Russia is not in a bad shape and this game is irrelevant in the big picture. Any team can fall to this Finland - in one game.

Russia was awesome... still our Liiga players played even better. Reality? Finland is best Hockey country atm. Next 10years with our Supreme coaching Young gold winners we are freaking owning all tournament.

I thought it was more 50-50. Finns peppered the net with a slight overall dominance in overall play, whereas Russians can be deadly with just a couple of chances.

If this game repeats 7 times, I think it would be completely false to say Russia would definitely win because Finns had their share of VERY close chances.

Sure, but I don't think this game repeats seven times. The second game would be quite different already.

I'm sure Jalonen isn't on the best of terms with alot of NHL players and his strategies are nothing revolutionary BUT he's effective. He's gotten the most out of what he's had, both with juniors and men while Marjamäki has only had success in Liiga.

I would put good money on the brave Finland team in a seven game series to beat Russia if Vorobyov is behind the bench. He is a dinosaur. He cannot adapt, cannot think the game. His line combinations are baffling.

If I see that 4th liner Grigorenko or that elderly citizen Kovalchuk playing with Russia's #1 Center Malkin again tomorrow, I am going to puke.

Maybe with a complete change in coaching / attitude or something. Why do you think that would happen?
