I'm all for having MSL retire as our captain. He showed his character in the playoffs and it will give McD two more seasons to truly mature after which time I say he dons the C.

I don't know what kind of leadership people see in Staal. He reminds me a lot of Leetch in that regard.

It isn't what I see in Staal that matters. I have seen player interviews the past few years where some of his teammates stated he was excellent in the locker room.

I loved Cally until this spring; then he turned his back on the season, on his teammates, on the fans, and on his legacy.
He put himself first.
It just cannot be denied or spun another way.

I'm sure you'll find a lot of similar thoughts about potential C MSL in Tampa.

Interesting blog post on competition for captain. Like his take on Zuccarello being in the mix. Always puts team and teammates first. Never backs down. While I doubt he's truly a contender, I wouldn't mind him getting an "A": http://nyrangersblog.com/2014-articles/top-six-candidates-to-become-the-rangers-27th-captain.html

If Zucc has another strong season, re-signs long term before next season, I absolutely see him with an "A". But not this season. Don´t think he will be a candidate for Captain for some years yet.

Cally turned on the Rangers and the fans.
He got TOO greedy and stubborn about $ PLUS years PLUS NMC.

'Team first' and 'win first' now seem like just an act.

I expected him to do as Dustin Brown did, approach team about a fair deal, where he didn't need every dollar, every drop of blood.

He turned down NYR's $30M+ offer.

Just 3 20-goal seasons,
only 1 season with more than 23 goals.
No season with more than 25 assists.

He turned down NYR's $30M+ offer.

Good luck in Tampa, Cally.

Well put! Cally could have stayed in NY for 6m per though insisted on a NMC which he never got. If you want to take a hard stance, you can get traded too.

Maybe if they put the C on him he actually starts playing like a star...

Nah, Columbus tried that, it didn't work.

McD has all the qualities you want in a captain. He's got the demeanor, he plays in all ends of the ice, he can change the flow of a game, he posses great offensive skills and no one out works him!

Thank you Scott Gomez!

I'm not sure who it will be. It's easy to look at the on-ice game and say so-and-so looks like a leader or plays like a leader, but I think an important thing for a coach is to select a player who the team trusts and can talk to. I'd much rather have a captain who can talk to guys and get their heads back in the game when it matters (when down in the score or a player has an off-game) as opposed to a captain who is named captain simply because he's believed to be the best player on the ice.

It's easy to look at McD and suggest he's captain material, but there's a lot more at play here than the average fan can comment on with any certainty. I think a lot of it defaults to behind-the-scenes material, and you can only hope that the coaching staff will take all of that into consideration when naming their captain.
