Caps get: Seguin
Stars get: Kuznetsov, Martin Fehervary (LHD prospect), 2022 1st

Rumors out this week that Caps may shop Kuznetsov this summer. Dallas seems like it needs a shakeup and is in a weird place where they can contend for playoff spot next year but dont seem like they have what it takes to contend for a Cup. With this trade they add assets along with a top 6 center to contend now and build for a future with Heiskanen, Robertson, Gurianov, etc.

Outsider looking in, this seems like a fair deal. Good job OP.

caps cant do this, to even go from kuzy to seguin its a 2 mil cap increase. with the cap not likely to rise anytime soon it would cause a big player also having to be traded in addition

Don't think the difference between them at this point is a 1st+prospect. Especially with Seguin coming off a year of injury and a 2m higher cap. I'd say if Dallas wants those pieces help the caps compete more and retain like 3m on Seguin.

Dallas doesn't need a shakeup. They need to get healthy. Them losing Seguin, Radulov and Bishop for almost the entire season did them in.

They are definitely not retaining 3m for 7 more years on Seguin's contract.

Yeah this is a no go from Dallas. Dallas does not want to make this trade. It was proposed by the capitals side. No way does Dallas retain. The first rounder will be a late first and I will be honest I know nothing of the prospect but Dallas needs forwards not defensive prospects.

Value-wise this trade is actually not far off but I agree with the bolded. Seguin is objectively a more complete player but he is more expensive. I don’t think either team really entertains this trade (moreso Dallas) because they both like their respective player. I think Wsh hopes they can squeeze more out of Kuzy, Dallas hopes one more year of healthy Seguin gives them hope of the POs, both teams stay the course.

Dallas's #1 center and #1 goalie have played a combined total of 3 games played this season. A shake up for them obviously doesn't include the guy who has been out the entire season with surgery recovery.
Bishop may never play again. Khudobin is 35 and may very well fall off soon. I dont think Dallas can reload the squad they have right now and compete for a Cup going forward

Maybe I gave up too much. Kuz is immensely talented but a head case

Alternative deal:

Caps get Seguin + $2M+ retained
Stars get Kuzenstov, 2022 1st and Hendrix Lapierre

No thank you. Seguin have been injured the whole season and didnt produce a lot last year. No need to pay up for a player who are around the same level. Since 15/16 season Seguin is 0,91 ppg and Kuznetsov 0,88 ppg. Kuznetsov has lower salary and Caps cant add salary. Also no point in trading futures aswell when the upgrade if any is minimal.

Seguin has also never produced anywhere close to what Kuznetsov have done in the playoff. His contract is also very long and it doesnt look like he will live up to it.

People who think team is retaining salary on their 1C signed long-term have been playing too much NHL 21 and i say this as a Capitals fan.

Rather keep Kuz but if they need to trade him i wouldn’t mind deal around him + and Seguin.

Can't imagine Dallas going from a guy who has bought into two way play and has matured as a leader and person to Kuznetsov who is obviously immature and not dedicated to his team and is one of the worst centers defensively.

Seguin's numbers last season are really impressive when you consider the teams offense as a whole. On a good offensive team he's easily back to 70+ points

Good job to the OP for actually proposing something of value.

That said, I don't really see that as enough incentive for Dallas to move Seguin

The Capitals need to keep that prospect and that draft pick to remain competitive in the out years of Backstrom and Ovechkin's final contracts. I dont see the Caps being willing to give that up for a risky chance to improve now. Giving him away and using the cap space to find a replacement makes a lot more sense.

I am thinking if they trade Kuznetsov it will be for non roster nhl assets

Seguin was almost a PPG player in 20/21
