Seeing So Many Ads on the Ice Is Sickening

  • If you are having issues logging in, we have found opening the log in page in a new tab/window rather than using the pop out should resolve these issues. We are working to get this resolved and thank you for patience.
  • Congrats to our latest Sportsbook winners - GOLD MEDAL kihei, SILVER MEDAL fish7 and BRONZE MEDAL Sammy Kat - new tournament begins today 6/15
The puck is on net, but Roy makes an easy save and directs the puck to the defensive corner. That save brought to you by Trojan condoms - Pleasure you want, protection you need. Much like Roy has been protecting the net tonight.

Harvey gathers the puck from the goal line and works his way up the ice. This change in possession is brought to you by Capital One. What's in your wallet? Probably not the puck as Harvey has it as he works his way to center. He skates over the McDonalds logo using those golden arches to coral the puck. I'm lovin' it right now, but Crosby isn't as he starts pestering Harvey with some stick work. This forecheck moment brought to you by Credit Karma. It's a smarter way to money, so remember to check your score as he keeps his player in check.

Harvey maintains possession but elects to chip it in and goes off for a change. This player change brought to you by Pampers. You gotta change lines much like you gotta change diapers. Love, sleep, and play hockey. Orr finds the puck but it takes a weird bounce and gets lost behind him. This error brought to you by Allstate. You're in good hands, but that puck wasn't as it works it's way towards the net. Brodeur takes a look around and decides to cover the puck when he doesn't like his options. This cover brought to you by Gatorade. Is it in you? Well, the puck isn't as Brodeur keeps it and the referee blows the whistle for a stoppage of play. This is a good time for us to take a quick 5 minute ad break before play resumes.

-I can see into the future-
:DD 👍

Soccer...hehe...I absolutely hate soccer in any form but last night I was out on a date night with my wife at a steak dinner place. Little did I realize they televised a world cup soccer game between canada and qatar.

Our planned quiet dinner turned out to be shouting and cheering and hollering with fans there. It was annoying, and I don't get it, but understand maybe a non hockey fan would have the same reaction if it was an nhl game and all of us were watching, or it was the world series with the Jays. But soccer in any form, whether Canada is involved or not...or world cup...not my interest.

I guess it comes down to "to each their own". I didn't look at the screens because I don't care and don't like soccer. I could choose to immaturely leave the restaurant and leave my wife the check, or just suck it up and realize that what may not be my interest and would be a point of annoyance for me, is enjoyed by others. Still, I focused on the yummy steak and fresh vegetables and enjoyed the time chatting with my wife, despite the noisy environment.

For me ads on the ice and such is similar - it's annoying (tremendously so), but I love hockey way too much to throw the baby out with the bathwater. There are some choices I have made, such as not watching commercials (great time for washroom break or cleaning up the kitchen and getting some steps in for limited exercise). My love for hockey supercedes my hatreds of advertising.
We differ on soccer but same on hockey and ads. 😏

I just don't get overly emotional about things I find annoying or dislike simply because I know the choice is always there to just walk away. Many people can't resign themselves to that possibility and as such can't escape the emotionality of whatever bothers them.

What's the over/under on those ads? Its always heartening to hear accredited sports journalists tell us this and then to remind us to know our limit.
Gary would be smart to have real time prop bets on what ad pops up next. Or numbers from 1 - 10 forming on them randomly.

PS - Can you imagine what would happen if these sports people took issue with these? I mean, I was waiting for Ron MacLean to start calling out Huawei at the very least when they already got banned in the states for being loaded with Chinese gov't spyware.

He knows his next Overlord and as such is not burning bridges. 😏

If I can turn off and avoid ads on anything I will. Recall when banners took up half to two thirds of a page when you are just trying to get information you like.
The whole point of an ad is to get your attention but you watching to pay attention to something else. The ones that provide it to you become less interested in providing or even supporting it than lining their own pocket. To them, the ads are the point, and not the product. The product becomes only a means to distribute ads.
I believe in capitalism and marketing. But at some point the market pushes back and that's really supposed to be how it works. The internet easily created ad blockers and its actually a market for some distributors. There's no "social contract", but if there is the audience will push back, and rightfully so, if they feel its being abused. There's at least two parties in any contract.

I bet a beer wasn't a buck a swallow when the NHL players wore elm bark shin pads.
There was no beer. 😏

If prices were crazy cheap or there was a revenue stream they hadn't yet introduced it wasn't because of any noble sense of keeping the game pure, it was merely they hadn't thought of it, didn't think it would work, or underestimated how much people would pay.

Remember, these are the same breed who wouldn't accommodate TV at the start because they couldn't see thr value of it.

There is an anecdote of one NHL owner refusing to remove seats for a camera because he didn't want to lose the revenue from those seats.

So these guys were always about the money. Anyone who thinks this is a recent trend look at the past with rose coloured glasses

Today?

It has always been about money.

Why do you think the league was ever created?
So all sport leagues were created to make money?
They were not created for people to have fun and do something with their lives besides work and going to church?

You are constantly wrong, and you defend the jersey ads and the on ice ads like you work for the league.
Very strange.

That’s quite a jump to conclusions. The NHL was created to make money. If it didn’t fulfill that purpose then it would cease to exist. We’re not talking about other leagues.

Agree...I remember watching old political debates from the early 80s. People, while being opponents, can still agree peaceably and have courteous discourse, even if they differ vehemently.

That whole decorum of communication seems so absent nowadays, where people stay entrenched in their positions, oftentimes it become emotionally driven, and how often do we see people humbly admitting their are wrong. Seldom if ever. Worse, it seems like people relish the conflict and the juvenile name calling. I have put off watching parliamentary debates or political debates as a result. People have just become more callous, more self-centered and have lost the art of peaceable disagreement.

Online discourse is the worst for this as one can hide behind the anonymity of the internet.

Advertising in general has needed to be reigned in for a long time, and yes it is getting worse, but given the toothlessness of US and Canadian regulators, I strongly doubt it happens.

Sports broadcasts are the only form of media I haven't yet managed to almost completely eradicate vile corporate promotion from, so I tolerate it for now. At least it's not yet personally targeted and privacy invasive.

Yes. All sports leagues were created for profit. They had owners, not caretakers, not administrators....owners. And what do people who invest money in ownership pursue? A ROI.

I have an affinity for the history of sports and any delve into it will reveal this. NEVER have I ever seen even a claim that the leagues were created for past time for the population. It was the other way around- the population and more free time and businesses came in to entertain them.

And you have this hang up that I am defending the ads. I have stated I hate them as much as anyone else the difference is I don't whine about them because I am an adult and know I can remove myself from the situation at any time.

Yes, the culture has indeed changed. Many cite social media but I think it can he traced to the 24 hour news channels and particularly the op ed shows as they got away from even the perception of neutrality and showed their biases and consequently started creating echo chambers

And for 100 years it did just that .... without jersey ads and only a few ice ads.

so why is it neccesary to now have helmet ads, jersey ads, tons of ice ads, glass ads, moving digital board ads?
