Sebastien Aho on Sebastien Aho

It's times like these when the old idiom "Sebastian Aho is from Finland, but Sebastian Aho is from Sweden" really rings true. These two brothers could not be more different - like oil and water.

Their parents, Sebastian and Sebastian, must be wildly disappointed right now.

It'd be one thing if it was a pretty common name like John Smith. But two Sebastien Aho's? That's crazy.
I was thinking the same thing. Add in the fact one is Swedish and the other is Finnish. I could see another Craig Smith in the NHL.

At some point these guys have to be traded for each other or be teammates, so we can have the glorious “Sebastian Aho and a 2nd round pick traded for Sebastian Aho and a 2nd round pick” or “Goal scored by Sebastian Aho assisted by Sebastian Aho”

NHL.com went the weasel route and opted for Sebastian Antero Aho (CAR) and Sebastian Johannes Aho (NYI).

Johann Sebastian, ba-humbug! This is some 3D trolling by NHL to hint at the composer of St. Matthews Passion a day after St. Patrik's.

Or possibly a glitch in the matrix.

Or matter and antimatter colliding for minor annaholation event.

Is Sebastian Aho a common name in Scandinavia? So maybe it is not that much of a big deal
It isn't. Name Sebastian is some what common as it's used in every country but it's not the most common name. Surname Aho is completely Finnish so Swede-Aho's one of the parent or grand parent was/is a Finn.

So it's super rare that NHL have two guys named Sebastian Aho while not having the same nationality.

Sebastian Aho

I'm finding this very disturbing.

This might explain a little of it...

Aho is a quite common Finnish surname, Sebastian is more common in Swedish but also used in Finland. There is also a Swedish speaking minority in Finland. That said, I don't know any other Sebastian Aho's than these two.

I guess that Swedish Sebastian Aho is of Finnish descent. Most probably his father is a Finn or at least father of his father is. You know like Tommy Salo (Finnish surname) or Magnus Pääjärvi.

Can a Finish person who only speaks Finish talk to some who only speaks Swedish? Do the languages share?

Most of those northern European languages are germanic in descent so many can understand, at least partially, the other languages

Finnish is weird and is not like the others

The Finns by genetics are actually the first people to arrive to modern day Europe, which is why the language and genetics (oldest in Europe, with many unique traits, like far higher tolerance to lactose, etc...) are so unique.

But of course throughout the past 10,000 years, there has been a *ton* of mutual meshing with the Swedes, so it's kinda hazy nowadays. And also, 5 % of the population in Sweden are Finnish immigrants (not sure how many generations this stat covers, ie. second-gen, or third-gen immigrants?), which in the US for example would mean 16,25 million Finnish immigrants.

They are not brothers, but they each have brothers. The Finnish Aho's brother is named Samuli, the Swedish Aho's brother is Samuel. I feel this isn't pointed out often enough.
Oh and they were both born in a coastal town across the sea, and the distance by duration is 8h 2m, and Aho has #28 / #38 and the other Aho #20. (8h 2m...) :D
