Monahan was given away with a 1st round pick as a cap dump to the Habs to make room for an aging Nazem Kadri and his massive FA contract. What a disastrous trade that was for Calgary who have since seen an exodus of players as the team has been stuck in limbo; not terrible enough to bottom out, but not nearly good enough to do damage in the playoffs. The Habs of course got another 1st for Monahan last year, so they actually got two firsts for Money. Calgary would have been better off letting Money rehab his problems instead of shelling out huge cash for an aging player and shipping out first round picks in the process.

As for Monahan, he's done nothing since his Calgary days but prove the haters wrong and is now sitting at PPG after 41 games in Columbus.

It was a stupid move from the get go. A healthy Monahan is a great player and always has been.

It didn't help that he was playing through injuries while Sutter had him cemented alongside plugs in the a bottom six role either.

Absolutely brain dead decision by Treliving whom already had one foot out of the door at the time.

Calgary was rightfully frustrated with Monahan's inability to stay healthy, he'd shown year after year that he was not capable of staying healthy and they needed to clear the cap space. Obviously nobody was taking that contract, with that injury history without a draft pick attached to it.
It can't be helped that almost immediately he put the injuries behind him and once again started playing at the level he's capable of.

What an idiot treliving is.

We liked Monny in Winnipeg (34gp, 24p) but he wasn’t the perfect answer at 2C for us. I know Chevy made him an offer to stay, but I’m glad we didn’t give him what Columbus did; age and injuries will be an issue there. Happy for him nonetheless.

Monahan was receiving so much hate from Flames posters on HFBoards over his last couple seasons, it’s crazy to see the 180 now that he’s doing good

Too be fair, he actively sabotaged the team by not sitting when he was clearly hurt. Shares blame with management anyway. That's going to bring criticism

Was always a terrible move to pay to get rid of him. Both things can be true

You are not wrong unfortunately. He received plenty of criticism the last two years here. I did plenty of so called “excuse making” for him back then, trust me.

Let's be real, how often does a player fully rebound from a catastrophic multi-year injury related decline?

Don't act like it's just Treliving who didn't see this coming, neither did you or anyone else.

They allowed him to play through significant injury year over year even when it was blatantly obvious that it dramatically hindered his performance. They then doubled down by taking him off of the top PP unit and played him almost exclusively alongside Lucic and Lewis in a role he has no business being in. To then really hammer things home they unloaded him at his absolute lowest possible value. It was an embarrassing string of decisions and a classic example of piss poor asset management. It sucks but that’s the reality.

And Flames fans were all pretty sure he was cooked, done for good. They didn't think that was selling low, they thought the player wasn't going to recover.

This, also had a flat cap from covid. I am happy for Monahan that hes gotten healthy and bounced back to the player he once was. But that was the hope and not the expectation.

Meh, Monahan in his last few seasons as a Flame was a horribly selfish player who refused to sit out so he could heal properly. Instead, he repeatedly played through fairly severe injuries despite being a liability making the team worse and hurt his value as an asset.

Of course, didn't help that the Flames were run by absolute idiots in Treliving and Dutter who seemed to encourage this kind of behavior.

Glad he's healthy and player well again, but this resurgence was never going to happen in Calgary given their gross inability to see the bigger picture.

He had a series of surgeries that can be career ending. It worked out for him, and flames fans are happy for him. Great guy. Every flames fan I've spoken with is happy he's succeeding.

On top of his inability to stay healthy, you also have to take into consideration the events leading up to his trade: Gaudreau had just left for free agency and Tkachuk made it clear he wasn't re-signing with us. With them gone, did it make sense to keep him (on top of his questionable health)? Broke my heart when he was traded. When he signed with Columbus in the off season, I was really hoping he and Johnny would tear things up together again, but it was not meant to be.

I do not miss him playing through injuries for most of the season and then ghosting in the playoffs. He’s a perfect player for a bad team and there’s a reason the Jets didn’t keep him around. The Flames should have traded him after 2019
