If for nothing else, I loved him solely for throwing Marty Brodeur off his game, which he most certainly did do. After all, there's the Avery Rule for a reason. The guy wasn't dumb at all. Just a little unstable, haha.

Good first stint.

After that less than useless.

A complete waste of what could have been a decent career.

He is some combo of mental case and pure POS.

Was this guy hated by Rangers fans when he played here or liked?

My memories of him was that he was dirty, crazy and physical with decent skills and somewhat speedy. But i did not watch him nearly enough as some of you guys did.

What are you guys memories of him as a ranger? Did you guys like what he brought to the ice?

My favorite player of all time. He wasnt remotely dirty. Pest/agitator? Sure. Dirty? Nope.

He got a raw deal from torts. One thing people rarely mention is he was actually a pretty damn good hockey player. Hed really excel in the league in 2023 with the way the game has changed imo.

Memory as a player, he would always catch me off-guard when he used his athletic abilities to actually make good plays. When he wanted to be an effective player, he was surprisingly good. I liked having a PITA like him on the team. And of course the Brodeur rule was such a great Rangers memory.

Memory/knowledge of him now post-hockey, he's a f***ing weirdo. Arguing with random teenagers because they parked in some spot that they weren't supposed to park in or something. Saying he could kick their ass, pulling out the "Do you know who I am?" line on someone else that steps in. I know there's been a number of other incidents, but that one was just..so sad to watch. There's all kinds of personalities in the world though, I suppose.

One of my favorite Avery memories. Sucker punches Smid in a game clearly in hand. When MSG comes back from the commercial all hell has broken loose. The Rangers were very entertaining in those days, even if they weren't a true contender just yet.

I miss this era of the Rangers, good times

he was both a based troll & a complete nuisance all at once, you don't get players like that anymore. He embraced the filth and muck of every NYC subway and he made sure to puke that up on the ice almost every night for the other team to skate in and have to smell.
I give him credit for what he was, but that era of player has long since passed and nobody like Avery would survive in the NHL of today. Flash in the pan type stuff with him.

Totally disagree. If sean avery was playing today hed be coveted hugely. His game would be far more effective in 2023 than it even was in 2008.

The league has gotten so incredibly soft since that time (far worse product overall) that with his mix of skill + agitating hed be a complete fvcking menace in this league where goons to deter guys like him are few and far between.

Remember this is the same guy who managed to totally rattled one of the best goalies of all time, prime kovalchuk, and half the league every time he stepped on the ice

Expected absolutely nothing when they acquired him. Pleasantly surprised to learn that he was actually good at hockey. Changed the whole dynamic of the team instantly, had a huge impact right away. Mostly for his in between the whistles play and head games.

Was the good kind of dirty. Not knee on knee dirty or hit from behind dirty, but he would get little cheapshots in constantly. Would drive the other team nuts. He would drop the gloves in his own weight class and could throw em, but he also picked his spots. That gave him a reputation for turtling that I always thought was overblown. He was hated league wide by every fanbase, kind of a mix of Marchand and Barnaby.

The Brodeur feud started the first game vs NJ and continued through his Rangers tenure. Pure entertainment.

Avery was a character that the old NHL used to be full of. He was a breath of fresh air. I honestly dgaf about what he does off the ice, he is one of my all time favorite Rangers.

I loved that guy. Tortorella put the bullseye on him and ran him out of the league.

One thing I will say he did better than anyone before or since was draw media attention. He was all they could talk about. Even on here in this peanut gallery, the thread were always about what he was going to do or what he just did. It took all the attention and let the other guys just focus on whatever thry had to do. Everyone else became invisible when Avery was around.

That's the worst thing about Avery as a hockey player.

He could have had a decent career, but he self-destructed on and off the ice.

Total jerk.

I despised him then and still do. He was an embarrassment to the organization.

I hated him. I thought he was a trash person and an embarrassment, but boy did the fanboys on here drool about him.

Admittedly, I did enjoy the fatso comments, but that's because I hated Brodeur more than Avery.
