Was this guy hated by Rangers fans when he played here or liked?

My memories of him was that he was dirty, crazy and physical with decent skills and somewhat speedy. But i did not watch him nearly enough as some of you guys did.

What are you guys memories of him as a ranger? Did you guys like what he brought to the ice?

My memory (no stats to back it up) was that when he played well and was noticeable in a good way, we usually won those games.

But his post rangers career and off ice drama were unfortunate.

Most people liked him, particularly at the Garden itself. Some people really hated him. Felt like maybe 80-20 in favor of him. Maybe even more. When he was playing his game, he was a really important contributor. Too often, particularly in the second stint, he was just lifeless and a drain on things.

Post hockey, he is undeniably a POS.

I enjoyed him here as a player.

Was an absolute prick to the opposition AND teammates.

Loved that he tapped Tim Thomas in the head with his stick. Found it hilarious that he stuck his hand in Uncle Daddys face while on the PP and then scored a goal from right in front.

We need more characters like him in the game today and I hope that Othamnn is a more skilled version with out being a prick to his teammates....much lol

He was mostly liked.

He wasn't 'dirty' in that he tried to hurt people (like Marchand, Burrows, or, Tootoo).

I think most Rangers fans share the same sentiment - when the Rangers acquired him, he joined the 06-07 team. He was certainly a positive spark to that team. Besides the Brodeur 5x3 stick waving, there was the initial incident with Marty in New Jersey. He got under Kovalchuk's skin during the Thrashers series.

His second stint, I do remember his return after the Dallas incident, he had an impact. For some reason, I remember the Rangers vs Capitals series where we went up 3 games to 1 (eventually lost - sound familiar?) - in that Game 4, I recall Avery being a factor.

After that it seemed like he was becoming a shell of his former self. I think HBO 24/7 had a little bit of coverage of his last days as a Rangers.

I'd split it 20-60-20. 20% absolutely loved everything about him and 20% hated him. The other 60% thought he was an effective player but his antics were a bit too much at times.

The Marty Brodeur incident will always be a memory to cherish.

Him scoring on that sequence is the most hilarious part of it.

I've never seen one guy almost focus primarily on trolling someone else for the entirety of a series. He completely owned him over those 5 games too.

He was entertaining to say the least and was a good player even aside from the antics.

I was at that game sitting with a clear view of the Devils net. I'll never forget Drury trying to get him to stop waving his stick in Marty's face while the Rangers had control of the puck lol. The fact that he scored 30 seconds later was classic. His whole rivalry with Brodeur made it worth it alone but he was also a very good player in his own right. He meshed well with Jagr when they played together.

Avery never shouldve chased the money out of NY, we had veteran leadership that could reign him in. It was never a dull moment with him. I was a fan.

I appreciated his energy and enthusiasm, but he didn't pick his spots very well and was a distraction at times. If he toned down the extracurriculars, I think he would have had long-term success as a 2/3 line playmaker. Very good passer.

One of my favorite Avery memories. Sucker punches Smid in a game clearly in hand. When MSG comes back from the commercial all hell has broken loose. The Rangers were very entertaining in those days, even if they weren't a true contender just yet.

Avery became a joke, which he did to himself. And I suppose he was a ticking time bomb the entire time. But in his first stint with the Rangers, he really surprised me. He was a much better skater, passer and even shooter than I expected. Like others have mentioned, he was quite effective when he was on his game. He should have been a much better player (and for a lot longer) than he was. Not an elite talent by any stretch but I'd take that first Avery on this Rangers team without hesitation (minus the drama).

Yeah pretty much, he was a solid player and effective pest but couldn't help himself from going over the line a bit much even on the ice.
That kinda got worse as his NHL career went on and he became more of a distraction than an asset.
I feel like hockey was never his big love and that's fine, but he also really just kinda tossed it away

eh

I think the Vogue internship was the beginning of the end for him. Not that there is anything wrong with him being interested in fashion or getting a job at a magazine, but that was when I really remember his off-ice interests started to become a thing that we heard a lot about. I mean I know he had the publicized comments about his celebrity ex-girlfriend a year or so before that, but after the Vogue thing I feel like it was downhill. He became more and more focused on things outside of hockey and less and less did he play like a factor every night. I could be totally off but that's kind of the timeline in my head.

He turned a lot of games into wars which was good in that those are the kind of games that his teammates didn't have a choice being all in or not....they're dragged into the maelstrom whether they like it or not. It's one of the reasons at least in his first go round that the Rangers W-L record was a lot better when he was in the lineup than when he wasn't. As far as dirty play he was a borderline player. The one suspension I remember him for was the comments he made about his former girlfriend. The shit he actually did on the ice.....no suspensions. So......? He was mouthy and he would say shit and get under skins that way too. The play I remember that I thought he went over the border was a sucker punch that concussed Ladislav Smid.....who challenged him and Sean seemingly turned it down only to belt Smid when he looked away. Smid was a guy who would fight no problem. Sean shouldn't have done that.

These days whenever it seems we hear from him he's up to something that's all completely f***ed up. His retirement from the game so far has not gone well IMO.
