OT: Sean Avery on Spittin Chiclets

One of my favorite Rangers ever. He absolutely raised the combative level of his team and the Rangers won a lot more with him in the lineup than when he wasn't.

Avery was a good player who was glorified for being a troll.

At times, it was hilarious (The amount of vitriol he threw in fatso's direction was glorious, the Avery rule play was the kind of shit you'd see in a comedy movie, especially with how he ended up scoring on the same shift) but there were times where he was infuriating.

He probably deserved a better fate at the end of his second tenure here, but I wasn't too broken up to see him go.

I was at the playoff game where Avery screened Brodeur facing the net then proceeded to put one away. I had no idea that would be the beginning of the end of his career.

After he started filming himself harassing the homeless, that was it for him with me. Barstool Sports is toxic though, so good outlet for him.
Yeah, agreed. Never really minded his on ice tactics - they were over the top but mental games are part of the game too and he wasn't going out looking to physically hurt people like a lot of "agitators" now. His post-hockey harassing people on the street stuff is really pathetic though.

Avery somehow thinks he was a star player, when he starts talking about the coaches worried he would get too much control its laughable. The guy was effective his first go around with us but he's a narcissistic clown who cant deal with the fact nobody wanted him to play anymore. The guy scored a high of 15 goals and never made it to 40 points and to hear him talk about himself you'd think he was on par with the guys he keeps name dropping. I had to stop listening to his crap about half way through the interview.

I agree... despite some of the good he did here, I always felt like he put himself above the team. It almost seemed like he was a separate entity that went out and did whatever it is he wanted to do irrespective of what the rest o the team was doing. [MOD]

It was fun for a little bit, but after a while it got tiresome.

I'd take a few guys who play with his energy on this team all day every day

I love Avery.
Truly a NYR cult hero.

I particularly enjoyed the story about Brett Hull telling him "You do not speak to Mr. Sakic like that"

What an absolutely reprehensible individual he is, though. I really liked him as a hockey player because he was on our team and other teams despised him, and it was entertaining. However I had no idea of the extent of his arrogance, completely devoid of any humility, and he's obviously proud of that too.

That was a great podcast!! Luckily I'll be in Boston this weekend so maybe I'll catch some of that movie being produced!!

I'm ashamed I was ever a fan of his, although I was a kid and he was exciting. He is truly an awful human being and seems to have never matured.

He's actually more arrogant than I first thought but he's also much smarter than I originally thought.

Spittin Chiclets is a must listen every single episode. It's the one venue where you can listen to hockey players be themselves and talk about real things that go on in the NHL. I always complain about how hockey players don't have personalities but Spittin Chiclets showed it's not that they don't have personalities, they're just trained to suppress them in front of the media.

Look at Keith Yandle. We heard Keith Yandle say, what, five words his entire time here? Then you listen to the Hayes and Yandle episode and realize he's probably one of the funniest players in the league.

So refreshing after hearing the same "get pucks deep, forecheck hard" stuff we hear most games.

Only problem is with three people doing the interviews they ended up cutting him off a lot. He was primed to tell a big Scotty Bowman story but they cut him off. He also made a really great point about Jim Dolan signing off on him showing support for LGBTQ and using the Rangers jersey while doing it. Never really thought about that before he mentioned it.

If you came away from that thinking Avery was in any way referencing on ice performance when he talked about coaches being afraid he'd get too much control then you completely misunderstood everything he was saying. It had nothing to do with how many goals he was scoring.

Avery IS very smart. He's also successful. Unfortunately many highly-intelligent, highly-successful people let it get to their heads and become really arrogant and condescending. Although a lot of the undesirable traits he possesses also lead him to be successful in the business world, since that's often how it works.
