Maybe next we can trade Fox for another RW plug to try to satisfy Mika and CK. If only we had a player like Buch that meshed with them.

Oh.

Wait.

Everyone complains the team is too slow yet when they trade one of their slowest forwards for a very fast skating defenseman (plus two picks) everyone is mad.

I'm willing to give Borgen a shot. He hasn't always been bad and Seattle isn't exactly setting the league on fire. Trade Lindgren!

Miller-Fox
Vaak-Schneider
Jones-Borgen

This was clearing money. We probably don't resign Vaak or Borgen. Might even flip them again at the deadline.

honestly the targeting a shitty player thing bothers me more than the return

Kakko is the definition of mid. It sucks he busted and I think a lot of the reaction to this trade is based off the fact that him being a bust is now basically confirmed. There’s no tiny bit of hope to hold onto that he’ll magically figure it out here. He’s gone and that chapter is over.
This is how I prefer to view it return be damned. I am curious however about the packages other teams offered.

Ok, Brodzinski might be harsh, but let me offer this instead.

I'll admit, Kakko is a decent NHL'er who just annoys me more than he's actually bad, but he's just like Vesey. He's a solid role player who kills offense if he plays too high for too long.

The idea that Kakko is this secret impact monster is Devils fan propaganda.
Could you do this with Reilly Smith and Kakko over the past 1.5 seasons as well?

Flipping them definitely came to my mind

Woof. Double woof. Welp, Kakko kinda sucked in an enigmatic kind of way, so I guess it's now perfectly fine for everyone to just admit it. But just like with Lias, excuses were made for him because of where he was picked when it was clear as day he had a 10-cent head and benefitted from his linemates instead of the other way around. The fact that Cuylle plays the same position and was drafted and developed by the same NYR staff shows that this pathetic return is entirely on Kakko, and it took a pro-Finland front office to make it happen.

I'm not a fan of Drury's work but I'm glad he finally ripped off the proverbial band-aid. What a bust. Take it all in boys, Kakko beats out Malhotra, Brendl, Lundmark, McIlrath, and Montoya as the biggest draft-day disappointment in franchise history.

Color me optimistic, but I think one of Perreault or Othmann will make us forget Kakko rather quickly.

I feel like the reaction to this would be less severe if the return was just a 3rd and 6th. But Borgen being included sends everyone over the edge.

100% truth here for me. Stop targeting crap players, the deal becomes gross if this is someone they want to extend.

Now, if he’s just a body until the deadline, and moved for a mid round pick, then I’m fine with it.

I read an article this morning in The Athletic where they looked at other high picks that were traded recently to try to peg Kakko's value. This is what the conclusion was:

"So what can Drury expect? A second-round pick? Maybe a package of a later pick plus a pending unrestricted free agent? Perhaps one team values Kakko enough to make a bigger offer, but that’s no guarantee at this point."

I was hoping for a second but maybe it's in line with what should have been expected.

If you can't read the article, it mentioned:

Dach (former #3) for 13 and 66. Dach was 2 years younger so there was more upside to bet on.

Byram (former #4) for Mittelstadt. Author concluded Byram had more upside and so this kind of return was unrealistic.

Broberg (former #8) leaving for an offer sheet that returned a 2nd. This was the ideal return presented.

Podkolzin (former #10) for a fourth. Podkolzin isn't as good and not as established so you'd expect more.

Newhook (former #16) for a 1st and 2nd. Newhook was coming off two 30-point seasons and had that Cup winner luster.
this just confirms to me that Drury is f***ing terrible

That’s probably true lol, I said it in the main boards I was expecting a 2nd+small piece, I guess this isn’t too far off in value honestly. Borgen is just a placeholder, and perhaps they flip him at the TD for another 3rd or 4th.
