Those stats to me tell the story. The shot attempts were 58-36 but only 18-16 in scoring chances show that the Avs carried the play but simply missed the net a lot. Dallas had the best quality chances but the Avs had higher number of chances due to carrying the play most of the game.

To the eye test Dallas struggled to progress through the neutral zone due to their Dmen not being good on the breakout and the Avs coverage, which is why the Avs controlled play. Petey's video breaks that down quite well.
To me, Dallas played as well as they have in MONTHS last game.

How much better can they play with that D-core and no Robertson compared to the Avs improving their own play? That is the key to me.

I mean high danger and scoring chances were pretty close at game end. Dallas wasn't consistently threatening but did threaten well when they did it was usually a pretty high danger one. Blackwood was outstanding and the Avs played well, but I wouldn't say 5-1 well.
I agree, but there are people here claiming Dallas was the better team or even dominated play. That is who I was responding to.

I think the score flattered us Saturday night. But I also think we were obviously the better team.

Hard agree on this. Compared to other G1s, the intensity of COL @ DAL felt a bit different by nature. I think the Avs played in a very mature way, and even though they made some defensive mistakes, their biggest thing to fix for the next game is their shot accuracy and hitting the net (as probably stated many times in this thread already).

Compared to past couple of years, I think this roster is more ready to "grind it out" and come on top in low scoring, one goal games.

I don't think they can play much better than they did Saturday with those two guys out but they could certainly get luckier on their shots. That's what scares me the most but I think the Avs outplay them again and win this game 4-2 with an ENG.

Mack can play with anyone but Drouin can’t. Drouin plays his best with Mack and with the current roster so does Nuke. Nelson also looks the best with Necas since he can drive the play. Just doesn’t make sense for Bednar to not go with what works but here we are.

If Colton can’t go and Lando is in I’d go…

27 - 29 - 13
62 - 11 - 88
92 - 10 - 94
17 - 18 - 25
That third line. It gives me wood.

Just a possible correction here, I don't think scoring chances need to be unblocked shots on net to count. Everyone compiles them differently, but I think generally it indicates where a shot was taken from and in what circumstances (cross ice pass, slot shot, odd man rush, or what have you).

What am I reading here? This is some kind of strange Rorschach test.

The Avs significantly outplayed Dallas in game one. It was not close. At 5v5, especially through the first two periods, the Avs were completely controlling play. All lines, almost every shift. They were not just controlling the puck, they also dominated Dallas physically.

Yes, Blackwood played great and made some huge saves. But that is not even close to outweighing all of the opportunities at the other end of the ice. Makar alone missed the net on 2 or 3 golden opportunities. The Avs had a nearly two minute 5v3 they didn't score on. They barely scored on a double minor. Oettinger robbed Toews on a golden opportunity. The list goes on.

If not for Dallas getting the inevitable questionable powerplay in the 3rd period, Dallas would have been shutout. This game could have easily been 6-0 or 7-0.
We gotta be the only team in the league that can dominate this much AND have our goalie being the best player on the ice at the same time. Talk about greatness.

As for Friedman, I didn't listen but he usually doesn't come accross as a big Avs fan to begin with. He's a big Quinn Hughes fan though, I wonder if somehow it's related.
