The boys didn't play their best game, and two of the goals were flukes, but I felt weirdly comfortable most of the game. The shitbirds had a couple of sequences that were worrisome but I felt for the most part that didn't have much threatening going on. The scoreline flatters us but probably only by those two fluke goals. 3-1 seems a fairer reflection. I believe we were the better team all round. From goaltending, defense and forwards. Now this was one game and they are missing their two best players, but we did what we had to to capitalize and honestly it didn't seem all that hard. Looking forward to Monday.

5-1 doesn't exactly tell the full story. The Stars had multiple good looks and without Blackwood it might have been a different game. 4giev would have lost it that's for sure.

Next game is massive. Win and it becomes real damn hard for Dallas to claw their way back.
Dallas has lost something like 8 straight game 1s, so they are in pretty familiar territory. So if they get to 1-1 they'll feel pretty comfortable.

The Avs need to be ready to being the A to game in game 2. A 2-0 lead would be huge. It put Dallas in a spot they do not want.

I don't really care about what happened in past seasons TBH.

What makes me a bit uncomfortable though is that they’ve now lost 8 in a row and this can't go on indefinitely. When good teams go on long losing streaks they tend to get hot once they break out of it and we definitely don’t want them gaining momentum and winning 4 in a row.

Probably not, which is why the Avs need to take advantage while they can.

The reality is the Avs played a ok game last night maybe a B level game. Tons of rust, but did a good job limiting the huge mistakes. They can play much better. Dallas IMO played pretty well. The Avs need to be on point moving forward.

Makar - off night
Toews - great game seems to raise his game in playoffs a few years now
Girard - steady
EJ - expectations for him are so low I thought he was fine
Manson - looked great
Lindgren - his puck skills (shooting and zone clears) suck otherwise didn’t notice

Necas - threw a hit, skates well, didn’t make poor decisions which I find he does
MacK - just ok night despite the points
Lehkonen - solid as always
Nelson/Drouin/Nuke - this line just does nothing of substance and I hate drouins game
Coyle - great
Drury - great
Kivi - great
Kelly - great
Loc - great

Blackwood was amazing we haven’t seen that in years so it’s such a weird feeling. Avs weren’t outplayed as badly as some are making it out to be but they did give up some very high danger chances. Gotta clean that up, good to take one on the road.

The Avs in general lucked out to a fairly comfortable win. The Stars had a few huge scoring chances, but Blackwood showed up.

Need to step it up a bit next game.
Yeah I think both teams need to play better if they want to win. I think we have other levels to reach. Winning w/o great games by Mack, Makar, and Nuke is a nice luxury. 😀

Just wish Bednar would swap Mack and Nelson with their respective lines. Seems like both would be more effective
I feel like we did that towards the end of the regular season, and for whatever reason, it just didn’t work too well. It wasn’t terrible, but with the way line 1 played, I’d probably leave it as it is for the time being

Overall good assessment of everyone except I’d say MacK wasn’t just ok, he was good. Maybe not great, but more than ok. He back checked hard, got 3 points, was good overall

Makar is always like that after a long break. It takes 2-3 games for him to regain full effectiveness.

I also wonder if the ice was shit. Dallas is already hot and humid.

I usually never focus on ice quality because both teams play on the same sheet, but it could explain how difficult it seemed to get clean shots from either team.

Overall structurally I liked our game, but missing the net, and bouncing pucks was a theme.

On another note..

I do not know how Blackwood moves so fast while being so big. It looks like he just straight defys physics when he's on. The guy looked like Varlamov and Bishop somehow had a baby.

The biggest thing I noticed was EJs inability to make passes. He relied almost entirely on high flips to nobody. In the 2nd it got real bad where he turned it over attempting one and Dallas' 4th line almost scored.

Can't be that careless with pucks.
It's his inability to smoothly recover pucks (along the boards and in his own zone) and quickly transition with a sharp accurate outlet pass to a speeding forward. EJ was "passable" (grade wise) but he has indeed lost a step and is not as quick and tight as he used to be when recovering loose or dumped in pucks.

If I was Dallas, I would exploit that and put on a much harder/quicker forecheck on the Avs D. Even Lindgren recovers and transitions better that EJ these days.....

He's a bottom pairing D..

If you could exploit every teams bottom pair that easily you'd never lose.

Also Girard is there, and if you're not arriving at the puck at the same time you're not catching that guy.

Not sure why anyone would shit on Lindgren's puck skills. It's a very underrated part of his skill set.
