Scouting Combine 2026

  • If you are having issues logging in, we have found opening the log in page in a new tab/window rather than using the pop out should resolve these issues. We are working to get this resolved and thank you for patience.
Hopefully In some alternate universe the Prospects get to ask stupid questions like this to the NHL brass and it is televised.
Reminds me of the Steven Wright joke. "I'm in the middle of a job interview and I get out a book and start reading. The interviewer says, "what the hell are you doing?". I said, let me ask you a question: if you're driving in a vehicle at the speed of light and you turn your headlights on, do they do anything? The guy said, "I don't know". So I said, forget it then, I don't want to work for you."

My comparision for McKenna has been the Sedins for awhile, he honestly plays like the third Sedin twin who has the best qualities of Henrik and Daniel. Him testing out to be a great athlete really strengthens that comparision (The Sedins where insane athletes).

The problem with all these stupid tasks is that it's not clear at all what it tells you about the prospect and what someone thinks they gleam from this could very well be completely wrong.
The point of them is not to glean meaningful information based on the result of the 'test', but to get them outside of their comfort zone as a way to see their 'truer' personality. What they are like when frustrated, uncomfortable, uncertain, needing to be playful or creative, etc.

Some of them are badly designed, some of them are better designed. It's just a means of gaining a different window into the players personality in the very short time you have with them.

As a prospect i would give wrong answers for the teams i would not like to go and try to impress teams i would like to join. Kind of what Jagr did back in the days. :)

They are behavioral questions which are part of most interviews, hockey or otherwise. We use them for interviewing engineers as well.

But like you said, some of them are poorly designed. At least make the questions centered around real scenarios than, ‘only 1 bottle of water to survive’. You want to make them uncomfortable, ask them about what they would do if a teammate is drunk and harassing someone. Or what they would do if their coach asks them to do something unethical, etc.

Maybe they already do though and we just get to hear the bad ones :)

If you want insight into a teenager it’s murky at best. Thr answer off the cuff is not realy going to extrapolate into how they will handle a bag skate in five years. If they really want to know about a kid just hire an investigator to speak to all his family friends teachers teammates and opponents that will speak and they will be tht best source since they have seen the prospect over time and in good and bad situations.

That's how you get banned from the league for 5 years and docked a 1st round pick, a la Chayka and his poor Coyotes.

So wait, Stenberg is skipping the testing because he has a cold? Wtf
Not too sure if that’s real but could you imagine the discourse and comments from some people here if that was McKenna.

They would go on and on how he has zero work ethic, lazy, spoiled… instead he has had some of the best metrics and scores at the combine.

If he is truly sick I don’t blame him, but imagine if the roles reversed.

Stenberg himself said it. Such a bad look. He could have totally bombed the physical testing and still gone top 5. Now were stuck thinking is this a guy who will call in sick during the playoffs too?

I ripped on McKenna all year long. I can gladly say I am impressed with what I have read about him at the combine. The measurements were as expected but he’s clearly an athlete. Still has some massive warts in his game to figure out, your not going to change the type of player he is. But at this point he is the obvious #1 pick.

When watching the Worlds there was talk by one announcer of some of the prospects skipping the combine tests because they'd just gotten off playing a tournament. But that's not a "cold."

About Stenberg. Do they allow sick players to do the testing? You can't just hide a realy big cold even if you wanted to.
