Scott Wedgewood injured in pain on the ice. Refs don't blow the whistle. Buffalo scores

You either have refs blowing plays dead for injury, in which case you get players faking injuries to get stoppages.
I'm seeing takes like this and it isn't a good one. Doing this would result in misconduct penalties being assessed, plus suspensions from the league.

186 replies to this thread and not a single person realizes what’s actually happening? They’re not mad about Benson potentially being at fault for the injury, they’re mad because he cellies like he just scored an overtime goal in the World Juniors or something; meanwhile, he just scored on an empty net with an injured goalie writhing in pain.
I would assume that this isn’t a Ridley Greig Gate situation all over again. Or did the Avs go full Leafs on this?

With respect to Benson, a young player, who saw his team lose one of the most embarassing comeback losses to the Avs not too long ago, I would assume that’s where the excitement and temperature of this game was at when it looked like the Sabres might actually win this one with his goal.

Nothing to see here. Avs injured their own goaltender and the ref followed the rulebook. Bednar sounded like an upset child and the Avs broadcast crew reminded us of why they are considered the most biased and stupid in the league.

Hope Wedgewood only has a minor injury.

Nope.

Devon Toews, who knows more hockey than you do.

“I disagree with it. When a smaller guy cuts underneath a bigger guy… your edges are gonna go - it’s just physics. A bigger guy's gonna knock over a shorter guy in that situation. Unfortunately, it goes right into our goalie and they don't see it the same way… I still disagree with it.I think most of us do in here. I don't think Kelly was at fault really for anything that he did there. He doesn't really have a choice but to engage with that guy when he cuts under him. We hope [Wedgewood] is alright and we'll move on from it.”
Lol at this.

Yes, a biased Devon Toews siding with his teammate, is obviously the only correct opinion here.

Lol he celebrates "like he just scored an overtime goal in the World Juniors"? Ummm he did a kneeling fist bump and a standing fist bump. Also he was pushed into the goalie, and the ref hadn't blown the play dead. What was he supposed to do? Ice the puck?

You need a copy of 'unwritten rules and their discontents' (Hunter, D 1987)

Should the play have been blown dead? Not according to the rules but probably. However, to prevent the inevitable amount of diving that would ensue once goalies realize that if they flop around like they're in pain the whistle will blow and the pressure will stop... there should also be a rule that if play is stopped because of a perceived injury, the injured player (at any position, not just goalie) is not allowed to return to the game for five minutes on the game clock (at least, ten maybe?).

If the player truly is injured enough to warrant the stoppage in play, chances are he's not coming back that night anyway (or will be out for a while getting repairs) so the new rule wouldn't impact them. But it would stop the vast majority of those thinking about performance art to stop the game, and that's not a bad thing.

Clifton saved a possible repeat of Hunter hitting Turgeon.

Unfortunate play, but I don't see an issue with the no whistle. Hopefully, Wedgewood is ok.

I think the play should have been blown dead, but you can't fault someone for playing to the whistle. Seemed silly to go after Benson after the goal.

I echo the others that it has to be this way or else a goalie is "hurt" on every contact they have with another player and stopping cycles in their zone.

he knows more about leadership. of course he's going to defend his teammate in the media.
I'll debate the leadership issue. Some guys out here very successfully lead businesses, families, military outfits, etc

A leader would have knocked Benson on his ass if they were so aggrieved

Same with the Islanders when Domi concussed Isiah George with a borderline reverse hit

Leadership to me is verb

I've always had the mindset that talk is cheap

I grew up in the school yard mentality of the 70s. Action talks bullshit walks

When I moved down south they simply said FCK the dumb shit

Sorry the guy got hurt. Hope he's OK. If ref didn't blow the whistle, Benson did what he's paid to do
