Do the Islanders re-sign him? How much is he worth on the open market if he makes it to UFA? I’ve seen some estimates of $4-5M for 4-5 years but that seems a little conservative to me.

Hmm that seems about right to me. Defensive defenceman normally don't command that much and he's 30. Deserves a payday though after being massively underpaid for so long.

The isles aren’t an attractive destination for UFAs unless they overpay.

4-5M if mayfield signs with another team.

5-6M if mayfield signs with the islanders.

You do realize things have completely changed with the entire Islanders organization right? They’re in fact one of the most attractive destinations.

Long Island is beautiful and almost every player who comes here ends up settling down here for good. Former players rave about Long Island.

New Ownership is first class and dedicated to winning.

One of the best practice facilities in the NHL.

A brand new state of the art area that has gotten nothing but 10/10 from all around the league.

Stop spewing this rhetoric. It’s not accurate at all.

As an oilerfan, I would gladly sign him at 4 -4,5 millions on a 4 year deal. If longer I say 4 millions.
He is what they search for, but Im afraid a lot of teams is in on him, thus many teams are not strong enoigh at defense.

And he is the only quality RD that is an
UFA.

He will get paid.

Feel like he’d be on Washington’s radar as they try to rebuild their blue line for the remainder of the Ovechkin era.

Ah, ok.

For Defensive D man Mayfield and Severson.

For offensive D men, Klingberg and Dumba.

I woumd thou say that Mayfield and Severson is stronger signings. And Severson is pretty much guaranteed to resign in New Jersey right?

It only take 1-2 teams to be interested to get that 5 year deal. Given his past contracts I have the believe Mayfield will probably go for the best contract(or at least one of the better ones)

It might be attractive as an incumbent. I’d imagine he’s comfortable in NY by this point. Maybe has a home, wife, and/or girlfriend here.

As a typical UFA it’s not a great destination unless maybe you’re from the tri state area. Cost of living is high.

If he is willing to take a discount I am guessing the Islanders or Colorado(I believe he lives there in the summer) are possible destinations

LOL oh man how can you type that without bursting into tears from laughing. it’s easy to see why islander fans are so jealous of the rangers since they are actually one of the most attractive destinations.

Please tell me who is the last quality free agent that signed a team friendly deal with NYI? Go on, I’m waiting. Nobody is taking discounts to play for the islanders.

Nothing has changed. Which is why Uncle Lou is forced to make bad trades and overpay players like Horvat.

This is pretty true for Free Agents in general. Tavares didn't offer Toronto a discount. Panarin used the Isles for leverage to get the most he could out of the Rangers, etc etc etc

When you're a free agent, the only discount you're giving is if it's July 7th and you're still not signed.

I hope the Canucks can open up some cap space and get him.

The Dman crop this year is really strong with Mayfield, Severson, Orlov, Klingberg, Dumba, Schenn.

Josh Manson is the comparable IMO. Same age at UFA, same position, Manson got 4 years, 18 mil. Probably took a discount to stay with the Avs.

I feel he wants to go to a good team. He’s not signing in Anaheim or Chicago Or a few orher teams

other factor is capspace uncertainty….you cant assume cap will rise give the Bally problem.

if you look at team rosters there aren’t many teams who have cap space after signing their RFAs

sure…all you need is one idiot GM.

the Term Manson got was good. I have Mayfield below Manson so Manson could be viewed as a cap.

as I said…he probably gets around $4M per….I’m not lo balling him.

it’s true with many players…if you want to play on a very good team you are probably going to need to take a discount than what you could get as a UFA.

That contract would instantly be added to the pile of awful ones there. Mayfield is over rated based on a good 1.5 years under Trotz. He's a bottom pairing dman
