everybody said it was a high cost but I never saw it that way because the pick is top 10 protected.

If it were unprotected that's one thing but It's not.

Yeah, there’s that, plus, three drafts out the present day value of the pick is closer to a second, and the team will be good, so, practically a third.

what a difference he makes to our depth.

We can run 4 effective lines throughout the whole game. When was the last time we had a 4th line on the ice when the game was in jeopardy?

Seems like last 4-5 years our 4th line consisted of guys who could barely skate.

4th line has been solid . No one misses Reaves and his defensive liabilities do they now.
Laughton has been good. Still a stupid price to pay. That 3rd line still sucks because we still don’t have a center. Domi is a ok player but is such a defensive liability especially at center.
Throwing a way a 1st rd pick on a 4th liner is never good management when you have a huge hole on the 3rd line

So no amount of sugar can make that trade taste better.

I appreciate Laughton play in playoffs tho. Just like Patches play I appreciate.

It's the third line, once again more minutes last night.

Yeah, Domi's been a waste. Oh, other than the two critical goals he has scored in our 8 playoff games.

If this trade or any trade gets me to the conference finals, something we haven't tasted in 25 years, you bet it was worth every pick

We are banking on too much on what a future prospect may come out to be, if anything at all
Our time is now

We have future assets. His name is Matthew Knies. We hit a home run with that one
Another one is Easton Cowan. We have goaltending depth
Denforth is still top defensive prospect, however, may not be anything more than an average player

We also signed some college players that were highly touted.

To me the rush of winning and the fact that this is the closest team we have had to anything resembling a winning team, I am all up for giving up firsts

I’d say objectively the price was high.
Brandon Tanev got a 2nd. We had to give a 1st and Grebenkin for Laughton. Obviously the extra year and retention played a role and were critical to allow us to also add Carlo.

Laughton not being very good upon arrival really made things hard to justify at first, but I did say all along while people were wigging out that we should all wait and see how he helps us in the playoffs.

The fact he is not a rental really is huge. With any luck we’ll add Tanev too in the offseason and have them both.

OK I have done a complete 180 on this guy .. he is freakin worth a 1st round pick .. dude is taking on Cats best players and he completely tilted da ice in our direction after Berube changed line matchups to start da 2nd period .. Matty got tilted badly in 1st period and Berube made da necessary adjustments between periods .. holy cow Scott Laughton took da game over and beasted da Cats .. in all of my dreams i would never ever ever think Scott Laughton would beast over da cats but he freakin did it .. dude is a playoff warrior .. we are damn damn lucky to have him .. he was even better then carlo last night .. should have been between Laughton and Patch for 1st star .. they were both LEADERS and both tilted ice to us

He’s a third liner all day.
The 4th line assignment is more about finding chemistry taking time and wanting to keep an effective line in tact. And they’re getting 3rd line minutes anyway..

I think your last point is the key: a full second year at 1.5 mil with some big roster uncertainty and cap crunch complications is what made it palatable. Teams window was and is open.
I don’t doubt that 25-26 will see him being a 35pt 3rd line staple.
Plus two playoff runs.

I never ragged on the price of Laughton, or really on him at all because transitions are tough (especially to Toronto). I'm glad people are coming around as were seeing the exact reasons he was brought in. He's a very good depth player to have and his line has really done some great things these playoffs.

Does the Tanev deal really make the Laughton deal look bad, though? Like... Laughton's value should be way more than double Tanev's just because of the cap hit ($1.5 vs. $3.5) and the extra year/playoff run. I liked Grebenkin, but I would think the 4th and 6th the Leafs get back mostly make up for him.
