OT: Sci-Fi and Fantasy Thread - SPOILERS Part Three

I love that I get to live this thru you but utterly dismayed that I cannot read thru it for the first time again.
I'm about to start Chain of Dogs, which from what I've been told is quite epic. Coltaine is already that dude. Man has led a fighting retreat over the course of three months while carting around tens of thousands of civilians. Duiker trying to chase him down while infiltrating enemy lines is right up there with Coltaine on the epic scale. Then the fight at the ford was spectacular as well. The sappers making and mining an underwater bridge overnight, then using it to escape and blow a huge portion of the enemy army to smithereens is the stuff of legends.

I still probably only understand about half of what is happening, but f*** me am I invested.

I just finished Deadhouse Gates. I may type up some more thoughts later, but for now this is all I can manage:

I remember finishing that book, I put it down and had to go for a walk. So many feelings and thoughts were running through my mind, I could barely process what I just read.
Yeah, so much happened over the last couple hundred pages of that book, I'm still just sitting here an hour later trying to fit it all together.

Some random thoughts in no real order:

Coltaine really is that dude. The man did the impossible, over and over again. Only to die right at the end of his journey because that f***ING COWARD Pormqual has absolutely no spine. All of the 7th and the Wickans are f***ing legends, the sappers especially.

I'm sure we'll see him again, given what happened with the crows when he died and during the epilogue. Same with Duiker. The glass jar thing Coltaine passed on to him saved his soul or something.

Pormqual getting decapitated was too quick a death for that bastard. He left Coltaine and his survivors to die, then condemned his entire army to death the next day. The man was barely in the book and he's easily one of my most hated characters in all fiction.

Kalam and Minala (not to mention Auntie Apt) becoming the surrogate parents to 1,300 children (who may or may not remember being crucified) is odd as hell, but far from the weirdest thing in the book.

I feel so bad for Mappo. The whole plotline with him and Icarium is incredibly heartbreaking. No notes.

Felisin becoming the new Sha'ik was absolutely not on my radar, she had quite the journey. I'm fascinated to see what she does next.

I hope Crokus and Apsalar are able to escape the attentions of the gods, and live a quite life in a quiet fishing villiage.

The scene where a young girl was walking up to Leoman to assume the mantle of Sha'ik was so well written. I remember genuinely not knowing if it would be Apsalar or Felisin, and it played into that so well.

Mappi and Icarium are such a tragic duo, Mappo's POVs were heartbreaking.

Nothing to add about Coltaine and the 7th. Absolute literature their entire journey.

No spoilers, but related to your first point, I truly love how when a POV character shows up during another POV, they aren't named immediately, and you have to pay attention to their description to figure out who the current character is dealing with. It makes the physical act of reading so much more engaging.

I’m definitely going to revisit this series after I clear up some backlog. As long as the series is, it shouldn’t be a one and done. So much does on in the series that I’m sure that I missed more than I’d like to admit; yet nothing discussed so far made me scratch my head.

I wanted a bit of a palate cleanser after Deadhouse Gates, so I did a quick re-read of Night Watch from Discworld. I think I enjoyed it even more the second time. Pratchett really knew how to thread the line between goofy jokes and serious social commentary.

I got started on Memories of Ice today, and I'm repeating the usual cycle of thinking I've found my footing only for eight new things to happen and undermine that. I'm not too far in, and not much has happened, but I'll comment on the most exciting thing thus far:

TOC THE YOUNGER LIVED! MY DAY IS MADE!

No context, just a name. Who’s your favorite character so far? Can’t be Toc the Younger

My man, you want me to pick one?! Through two books I've had like 50+ POV characters, let alone all the rest. Gun to my head, I could probably narrow my top 5 down to 10. In no order:

Kruppe
Whiskeyjack
Tattersail
Quick Ben
Coltaine
Duikier/His Marine
Mappe/Icarium
The Hounds

Oh, and I'm mad for not giving Sormo, Nil, and Nether. Coltaine wouldn't have made it halfway there without them.

We seriously have to wait a year or so for the next season of the last of us only to find out that Dina was the one that shot and not Abby?

Aight, I'm not quite a quarter of the way through Memories of Ice, and while I'm still swimming in the dark a bit, it's pretty clear that shit is about to hit the fan.

Paran has been dealing with some weird shit. He just got teleported to the Azath house in Darhuijstan, and saw that Burn was wounded, and is infected by the Crippled God. He's also becoming master of the deck of dragons, whatever the f*** that means.

Silverfox is about to be the new queen of the T'Lan Imass or something. Kallor wants her dead, everybody else is taking a wait and see approach or actively protecting her. The ones on her side are trying to make sure it's Tattersail's persona(might not be the best word?) takes precedent.

Caladan could use his hammer to awaken Burn, but that would apparently release the Crippled God who would then go an annihlate everybody on the planet, but by not acting, he's allowing Burn to die, which would lead to all the warrens meeting the same fate, then everybody would get annihlated anyway (if I'm understanding that properly, anyway). Talk about a no win scenario.

Also Envy f***ing with Toc has been f***ing hilarous. No notes.

Still chipping away at MoI:

I think the one other big thing I forgot to mention was that Dujek's army hasn't actually been banished/outlawed by Laseen, and only he and Whiskeyjack are aware of that (and Kalam, I guess). Not really sure what Laseen's plan there is, but I'm sure it'll make sense when I find out.

MORE IMPORTATNLY, WE'VE GOT MOTHERf***ING T-REXES WITH MOTHERf***ING SWORD ARMS. f***. YES. Poor Gruntle, though, dude got slapped around hardcore.

The duality of Malazan. Depressing and incredible prose prose but also dinosaurs with swords for arms

And not just dinosaurs with sword arms, UNDEAD dinosaurs with sword arms.

I knocked out a good chunk tonight before the game. I actually had to force myself to stop reading because I would have kept going until 10:00 and still not made dinner.

Random stream of consciousness while I watch the game:

Shit is starting to pop off. K'chain Che'Malle are popping up all over the place, as are the T'Lan Imass gathering for the Gathering. Tool's conversation with his sister was heartbreaking. Envy and her crew made it to the Domin and have started absolutely slaughtering dudes. They tore apart the temple at the border and started some wholesale slaughter in Bastion. Toc is trying to nope out, though. When I stopped reading he had just turned onto a street full of zealots.

We learned why Quick Ben has access to so many warrens, despite most people thinking he's just some average mage and witnessed the birth of the Bridgeburners. That whole trek across the desert was some Chain of Dogs level shit, and Whiskeyjack just casually tells the story in about 15 pages.

Gruntle and Co were just barely saved by the T'Lann Imass and Grey Swords (who put up an absolutely insane charge against a K'chain earlier, I really want to see them in action against some conventional enemies).

All of that is a sideshow, though. The real concern is the Burn/Chained One situation. It won't matter what happens in Capustan if Burn dies and the whole planet gets turned into a tinderbox.
