That's why we play the games. If it should go based on standings then why not just give Boston the cup? Florida won fair and square and maybe the eastern teams are all chokers not contenders. Being the best regular season team does not mean you win the cup
So what are you actually trying to say? Large sample sizes are important, but the teams that are on top after 82 games aren't actually that good?
Florida had a great run in the second half of the season and playoffs. A lot of their success in the playoffs was a matter of Bobrovsky and Tkachuk pulling some historic levels of insane playoff clutchness. That sort of thing can happen over a short streak, we have seen it happen a whole lot of times in playoff history. It very rarely happens over the course of a complete Cup run, and we are seeing the regression happen in real time.
Check Bobrovsky's playoff save%. Going into this series it was .935. As of the time I type this post it's down to .916. His career is .915. This is what regression looks like. The question was whether it would arrive in time to sink the Panthers, and that's exactly what happened.
Edit: funny enough, the same thing is creeping up on Hill now. Unless you think he's also a bona fide .935 goalie.
