Sunday, January 1, 2023

Aqueduct (New York):
  • Race 9: Prince of Joy (Jacqueline Davis/Richard Legall) was the longest shot on the board at 32-to-1 and stamped the $.50 Pick 4 hard with all winners getting more than $26,000 in return. Legall, who has nine lifetime wins in a career that began in 2013, has already tied his career high for wins in any one calendar year. He sent out two horses on the first day of 2023 and both returned winners.
  • Davis Siblings: Dylan won, Jacqueline won and Katie finished second on a 21-to-1 shot, her lone mount. A rare time that all three rode on the same card. Brother Edmund trains as does father Robbie, mostly at NYRA tracks.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Race 9: Dreaming of Kona (Scott Spieth/Aldana Spieth) won the $100,000 Mucho Macho Man Stakes as the third longest shot in a field of 11 following a DQ. The 55-year-old rider doesn't ply his craft at Gulf too much -- his second lifetime win, rather more so at Tampa Bay Downs (FL) and Presque Isle (PA). Spieth is 32 wins shy of 5,000 in his career. He is married to the trainer who got what is likely the biggest win of her career. The 3-year-old colt won for the second time in three starts and broke his maiden in his first attempt at Presque Isle Downs (PA). Not too many horses win stakes at Gulf following a debut win at Presque Isle two starts prior. The reaction by winning owner Lisa Ballou was authentic as she appeared to be overcome by a mix of excitement and shock. Good stuff!

1672626778914.png
  • Race 10: Kitten Mischief (Jose Ortiz/Jonathan Thomas) won an extremely rare 1 1/2 mile turf race at 5-to-1. Having Kitten's Joy in the bloodline helped. The $.20 Pick 6 paid over $66,000.
  • Jose Ortiz rode three winners.
  • Handle: $11.4 million.
Turfway Park (Kentucky):
  • Kent Desormeaux, a much-maligned figure with lofty Hall of Fame credentials, rode for a rare time at Turfway and finished 3 2-1-0 which each mount for Wesley Ward. His most recent 2-win day was November 28, 2021.
Oaklawn (Arkansas):
  • Race 8: Victory Formation (Flavien Prat/Brad Cox) wired the field and won comfortably to garner 10 points towards entry into the Kentucky Derby following a win in the $250,000 Smarty Jones Stakes. This is the first of four Derby preps at Oaklawn also the Southwest, the Rebel and the Arkansas Derby. Angel of Empire (Joe Talamo/Brad Cox) placed. Smarty Jones took America by storm during the 2004 racing season and is at or near the top of the list for "Should have won the Triple Crown" frustrations of many pundits.

Victory Formation is now tied for sixth among earners to the 2023 Kentucky Derby. The very early leader board:

It appears that rain could affect turf racing later this week at Santa Anita and cards could be all-dirt. Today's card is scheduled to go.

I don't know why, maybe it's because Hard Spun won it and he's a horse I liked, but the Derby Prep season really begins for me with the Lecomte Stakes. Although that used to be held earlier in January.

Interesting perspective. I elevate the BC Juvy because of Street Sense.

Did Michelle Yu just sing "Motorious" to Duran Duran's "Notorious"? Awesome.

Race 9:
Bob Baffert exacta paid $29. Not bad for a 5-2 and 3-1 1st-2nd finish.

The final three nominees for Trainer of the Year could very well be ABC -- Asmussen, Brown and Cox with the latter winning. I will say that Bill Mott's figure is higher than I expected, a very good showing. Baffert has his critics and that will hurt his chances. Pletcher perhaps being second-fiddle to Brown on the East coast hurts his chances but the man deserves acclaim. D'Amato may have the reputation for being too one-dimensional: turf in southern Cal.

Charlie Appleby winning nearly half the time in his visits to the States is something exceptional.

Jockeys should be Irad, Prat and Rosario in some order.

Charles Town (West Virginia):
  • Race 3: The $2 double was $3,347.60. That's a headliner. I doubt there were more than 10 doubles that surpassed that mark in all of 2022.
  • Opening Night: The meet runs 164 days into mid-December 2023.
Turf Paradise (Arizona):
  • Harry Hernandez rode six mounts, four returned winners.

Aqueduct (New York):
  • Kendrick Carmouche had three winners, two for Rob Atras.
Mahoning Valley (Ohio):
  • Luis Batista won the first four races en route to wins with his first five mounts and a brilliant 6 5-0-0 afternoon.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Race 4: Adeliese's Smile (Leonel Reyes/Jose Jimenez) gave the jockey his second straight day with a bomber. Yesterday, he won at 40-to-1. Today he won at 48-to-1. He had a stellar 2022. A breakout year in essence. He can bring home bombs as well as almost anyone.
  • Race 2: Naval Officer (Miguel Vasquez/Elizabeth Dobles) gave the trainer her second win with two starters this year and a remarkable 7-0-3 record with her past 12 sent out. She's good! I have been saying that for a while. Imaginary Stables, her business associate, is headed by New Jersey-native John Guarnere.

My expectation that 2022 would be a record-setter fell slightly short. More than $12.1 billion was bet on U.S. racing in 2022 which is 0.8% less than the record-mark established in 2021. Purses were at a record with more than $1.3 billion distributed. That is a staggering figure.

A need to break protocol and quote one's self. Leonel Reyes won the Gulf opener today at 24-to-1. He topped a $.50 tri that returned over $5,200.

Three straight days with bombs. Strike while the irons are hot.

That horse was blocked along the rail for quite a while In the race.
When it opened up. He won the race rather easily.
Pretty tough to figure though.

Very good jockey colony at Gulfstream.

Meydan Racecourse (Dubai, UAE):
  • Winter Carnival: Today was the first day (schedule below). There were plenty of fireworks highlighted by six of the seven races paying out more than $14,000 each to winning $1 superfectas
  • James Doyle won the last three races (of seven).
  • When: Every Friday from January 6 through February 24 and Saturday, March 4 and March 25. Specific dates are as follows with a 9:30 am ET start (times subject to change).
Friday, January 6
Friday, January 13
Friday, January 20
Friday, February 3
Friday, February 10
Friday, February 17
Friday, February 24
Saturday, March 4
Saturday, March 25
  • World Cup: Saturday, March 25. The $12 million Dubai World Cup is the culmination of the meet and part of a $30.5 million purse day. The purse for the World Cup -- at $12 million -- is the second largest in the world.
  • Post Times: Dubai's Time Zone is nine hours ahead of Eastern Time (ET). Times for the races could vary.
Aqueduct (New York):
  • Race 1: Uncorrelated (Manny Franco/Chad Brown) won the opener. Franco rode extremely well for Brown last year. Today, well, he entered the record books. The 3-year-old Arrogate colt debuted today and cost $170,000 by potential Eclipse Award nominees Klaravich Stables who tend to spend wisely even with their priciest purchases.
  • Manny Franco Ties Record: Manny Franco finished this record-tying afternoon with six wins on seven rides. No one else had more in 129 years of racing at the "Big A." The six win-total is also a personal best.

1673055191054.png

Santa Anita (California):
  • Race 2: Coffee in Bed (Mike Smith/Richard Mandella) was the lone first-time starter in the race and the result was very handsome for those who wagered successfully at 19-to-1. Again, mentioned often, lone first-time starters are not always winners but they generally offer high value when used as high odds.

  • Race 5: The $.50 Pick 4 paid over $24,000. The $.50 Pick 5 returned more than $33,000.
  • Race 8: Nullarbor (John Velazquez/Bob Baffert) won the finale. Interestingly, Baffert was not in the winners' circle. His horse was not sent off the favorite either. The Candy Ride colt cost $500,000 and broke his maiden in his third try.

I am a bit surprised that Brad Cox was omitted from the list of trainers. It is good that Todd Pletcher is getting more attention than he has received in recent years.

Too many people have given Apprentice of the Year to Gomez. I don't think many follow Laurel. Certainly the bug rider in Louisiana falls under the same but Barbosa gets my vote without flinching.

Some selections are less rigid than others.

The 2022 Eclipse Awards Finalists, with the exception of Horse of the Year, (in alphabetical order) are:

Two-Year-Old Male
: Cave Rock, Forte, Victoria Road (IRE)

Two-Year-Old Filly: Leave No Trace, Meditate (IRE), Wonder Wheel

Three-Year-Old Male
: Epicenter, Modern Games (IRE), Taiba

Three-Year-Old Filly: Nest, Secret Oath, Tuesday (IRE)

Older Dirt Male: Flightline, Life Is Good, Olympiad

Older Dirt Female: Clairiere, Goodnight Olive, Malathaat

Male Sprinter: Cody's Wish, Elite Power, Jackie's Warrior

Female Sprinter: Caravel, Echo Zulu, Goodnight Olive

Male Turf Horse
: Modern Games (IRE), Nations Pride (IRE), Rebel's Romance (IRE)

Female Turf Horse
: In Italian (GB), Regal Glory, War Like Goddess

Steeplechase Horse
: Down Royal, Hewick (IRE), Snap Decision (ABSTAIN)

Owner: Peter Brant, Godolphin LLC, Klaravich Stables Inc.

Breeder
: Godolphin, Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings LLC, Summer Wind Equine

Trainer: Steve Asmussen, Chad Brown, Todd Pletcher

Aqueduct (New York):
  • Manny Franco added four wins to his remarkable week. He is 15 10-1-0 the past two days. That is a magnificent streak.
  • Race 8: Lugan Knight (Dylan Davis/Michael McCarthy) won the $150,000 Jerome Stakes which is the first 2023 Kentucky Derby prep of the calendar year.

Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Handle: $13 million under wonderful skies.
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. rode three winners.
Oaklawn (Arkansas):
  • Robertino Diodoro:

  • Race 10: The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $59,000.
  • Race 7: Rolling Fork (Kylee Jordan/Kim Puhl) won as the longest shot on the board at 60-to-1 and by a nostril hair. The payout was $123.

1673152014708.png
Turf Paradise (Arizona):
  • Race 10: The $.20 Pick 6 paid over $68,000. I don't recall too many payouts like that at TP.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Handle: $14.5 million on the California Cup Derby Day.
