Sarnia Sting 2024 25 Season Thread Part Iii

Well think DS stays but I'm thinking Guy group firea Letang once Draft is done. Its isn't an enticing thing for a top 4 pick to want to come into. Poor coaching and no identity coach ZERO defense coach and worst PPand ok coaching in league. If my kid or I was a player top 4 ranked I'd want any other team but Our beloved sting picking up. New ownership of not, I don't want to play there almost as much as Niagara.
Be interesting to see how this draft plays out and if the player picked or wants will come.last year the player they wanted wasnr coming so picked someone else.
Id love to agree with you but I think Letang is staying for the time being. Guy would immediately be my favourite sting owner ever if he fired Letang when it's official.

Welp. If there's any doubt Letang is the one doing media so he ain't going anywhere.

About Wainwright he says "we know he's coming back" & with Young he almost shits on him a bit lmao.

“I thought Mitch Young at times had pockets of what he’s going to be. If you want to look at the glass as half full, which is not always easy, that’s exciting. That’s really exciting.”

Think that's a wild thing to say about the Dman who lead us in scoring most of the yr & was only -4 or whatever. No need for glass half full when he was our best player for long stretches lmao. But doesn't sound like someone they expect to lose.

He mentioned being very very excited about what Karimov showed which made me LOL.

Also clearly he views Maillet higher than I do saying - "Another good sign was “the emergence of Evan Maillet as a potential No. 1 goalie,” he said. “Some of the games he’s played (were) super positive, super exciting for next year and down the road.”

Rest of the article is here. Find it weird to label it as Sarnia adding a young player at 4 and it not be about that pick whatsoever.

To be somewhat fair to Letang, I believe he meant he knows Young had a good season but he thinks he is just scratching the surface of what he can be. The “glass half full” part was about the teams future potential even though it was a dissapointing season. That’s how I read it anyways.

Guess I just see red when it's Letang related 😂😂😂.

Hope he meant it that way because he had a pretty damn good season.

There are definitely more explosive, fast and flashy players in the draft. But man I’m watching Jaakko Wysick #77 and he looks good. When he has the puck it just seems like the entire game slows down, he almost looks like a guy in beer league that isn’t trying because he’s better than everyone else lol. Hes got good size, hard to knock off the puck, good in the cycle, definitely a playmaker, makes very smart passes that I don’t think many kids have the IQ or vision to make. Obviously he can score aswell because he had a lot of goals during the season and two in the big tournament. It seems like he’s trying the hardest when he’s trying to get the puck, he’s relentless on getting the puck, and he’s a dog on the back check. From what I’ve seen his IQ/hockey sense is through the roof. He reminds me of draisaitl/crosby mix (obviously not that good lol), but has both of their traits. I think he would be good with guys like edwards, karimov, manza, di iorio who can score.

inject this into my veins... in the first clip SCP is running some sort of umbrella power play with him on top.... Wild a minor hockey team can run a better power play than an OHL team... The more I watch these videos the more I think he may not be there at 4 especially with Murata having such a poor showing.

I know, I’d be pumped if we got this kid, maybe the other teams ahead of us in the draft will fall in love with the speed and flashy plays by the other players. I love everything about Wysick’s game (size, hockey IQ, two way play, vision/playmaking). I think he would be great for us, good in his own zone, back checks hard, holds on to pucks to create space and has the vision and play making to set up guys like edwards and manza. Very patient and calm with the puck. Ya I noticed him quarterbacking the powerplay, hopefully Letang took notes for ideas for our Powerplay lol 😂

He's nasty. Ive heard he can float around sometimes/look disinterested, but that can be worked out of a player. He's got the potential to be a really high end producer & his skills would absolutely mesh with what we have.

Be thrilled if we ended up with him & honestly from the early buzz (no pun intended lol) there's a real chance we could.

Be honest he’s the guy I would pick, looks like he does all the little things right in all three zones, battles hard to retrieve pucks and cause turnovers, vision/playmaking is definitely there, hands and passing abilities are top notch. He is a solid skater, he’s definitely a lot faster than he looks, doesn’t look like he’s skating fast but he goes around defenders with ease. He would definitely mesh good with our forwards and complement them well. I like him but I’m not a scout lol. Legwand and Seca will probably take someone under 5’9 or take a hard working bottom 6 forward lol 😂

Video #1 of the top group lol.

Did Wycisk first since he's been our most discussed player.

Watched probably close to 20 games of his on YouTube + some highlights on X. Didn't clip everything he did because it would be 10+ mins haha, but little glimpse as to what he brings offensively.

My "scouting" report of him -

Reminds me of Martone with the puck to a degree. He uses his length to his advantage a ton to protect the puck and get it around sticks on passes like Porter always does. He doesn't have the smoothest skating stride ever (again like Martone) but it gets the job done for him.

His shot is quite good for his age, his skills are unreal & you combine that with his size... Scary! When he was clicking in the games I watched he was borderline unstoppable.

He makes everything look easy. He never looks panicked or uneasy. He makes so many 3-4-5 foot passes while under pressure. Really impressive.

His cons:

Effort level/consistency. He can tend to just float around at times or look disinterested. Sometimes only for a period or sometimes for an entire game. Not gonna kill him for it though. He's 14/15 & everything comes "easy" to him as this level. But something some will harp on.

Acceleration. Could use some extra giddy up in those first few strides which once again can totally be added with maturity, strength, trainer etc.

One man show sometimes. See this a ton with top picks, but he can go full show off mode and try to go 1 man vs the world lol.

Overall huge fan of his skillset and upside. He could be a dominant player as he ages & his facilitating abilities could go extremely well with what we have.

My biggest worry is we know how ridiculously high Letang and even Seca prioritize "heart, grit, effort, desire" and I could totally see Letang watching video of him and nitpicking the kid to hell for the cons I mentioned & get Seca to pass on him...

Ya those could definitely be worked on and fixed pretty easily. The disinterested could even be the league he’s in, not a bad league at all but it does not have the same level of competition as the GTHL, he could legit be bored out there lol 😂. One man show again could be him being the best in his league and showing off his skills for scouts, if he played for the jr.Canadians or the flyers he would have alot more talent to play with and would use his teammates more often. My thoughts on that. I doubt Seca will draft him, so I’m not getting my hopes up.

Here is what Jordan Mallette said about Wysick and Delisle. (Scout for Puck Preps)

Wysick:

I really like him. Really exciting package of being able to move fluidly and handle the puck all in a big frame. Reminds me of Ryan Roobroeck in that way, just really impressive how well they both could get around the ice and never really look clunky despite being bigger. Wycisk way more of a two-way player and playmaker than RR, but just in terms of physical tools they are comparable. JW gets called lazy by some and I think there is some truth to it, but I think a lot of it is just "how" he looks, he's so powerful / effortless skating that he looks like he may not be giving 100% effort, but he's always trying to make a play on the puck despite how it looks. Not a major concern for me.

Will he be there at 4? I have no clue. Initially I thought JW would go to PBO at 1, but sounds like it'll be maybe Kaden McGregor. My guess is Guelph goes Warren and Ottawa is where I get stumped as I originally assumed they wanted McGregor.

Yea non-chalant is a word ive thought about with him. It looks like hes barely trying but he's getting around the ice well even if it looks effortless. I think how it looks is what is the double-edged sword that gives him the lazy label.

Definitely not physical, but uses his stick / reach really well to win pucks and is effective that way without really being someone who will lay a big hit. Max Delisle is more that type of C who will win pucks with physical play.
He's just not physical in the sense that if he's forechecking he's going to try to strip the puck vs. finishing his hit. I'd never say he's shying away from going to the corners or driving the net, just his first instinct is to try to win the puck with his stick. He protects the puck really well down low with his frame / can beat guys wide and cut in toward the net,.

He's listed at 6'0 but I've always felt he looks a bit bigger than that. His dad is 6'1 so maybe some room to keep growing. Teams definitely do more homework on that stuff than I ever possibly could, so maybe someone has better intel.

Delisle:

Delisle is more of that "pro" style centerman. Always winning battles, always in the right spots, doing the little things right sort of player. Not as skilled / flashy as some of the other options but teams prioritize these types, similar to a Colin Fitzgerald. He's a solid playmaker, but more of that does everything to get the puck up ice sort of player. Would do well with some skilled wingers, as he is now with the Titans.

I'm not sure where Delisle goes. Maybe Ottawa they need a C and he's a local player, but he doesn't really fit their typical brand which is more a Warren style. Delisle's brother is in Owen Sound so that was always a thought, him and Wysick will both go top 5.

I really like Delisle. He's a beast. The reason I don't wanna take him has literally 0 to do with his skills. He plays & looks like a pure centreman. He plays C exactly how you want someone too.

I know this high you shouldn't care/take best player available, but Sarnia has never been mored loaded down the middle than they are now with Beamish, Edwards, Di Iorio.

So you gonna move a kid who looks like a fantastic C to wing where his impact, best assets might get diminished a bit, or have him centre line 4 for 2 years (assuming beamish stays an extra yr)

Feel like with Wycisk & Warren they might be even better at wing, because the defensive responsibility of being a C goes away & both have such high end creativity might have a little more freedom on wing.

Wysick plays both wing and centre so it wouldn’t be a problem for him to play wing. He has no problem with his two way play though, responsible in all three zones. But if they really like Delisle and they think he can outplay Beamish in a year you can always trade beamish for a winger/defenceman or package him for a top goalie. Always options.

true and still no idea if beamish will stay an extra yr. if he doesn't Delisle becomes a perfect 3C behind Edwards & Di Iorio.

Still would prefer them taking a potential game breaking talent like Warren or Wycisk than a do it all player like Delisle, but he's a stud too so hard to be mad lol.

Ya I agree, I’m obviously all aboard the Wysick train lol.

Ohl4life mentions in the draft thread rumor is Sarnia is prioritizing a goalie in the 2nd round, main guy being Cruz Reznik who many consider the #1 goalie. Works with our goalie coach, too.

I'd totally be down for that. Sarnia needs to get a high end goalie for once. Homegrown especially.

Ya that would be nice, hopefully he is better than the last #1 ranked goalie we drafted lol 😂 , atleast we won’t be using a 1st rounder on him. Do we have two 2nd round picks and a 3rd?

No 3rd.

We have picks

1st - #4
2nd - #26
2nd - #42
4th - #69
5th - #101 & #102

No 6th, one 7th, three 8ths, 9th, two 10ths.

I'm down for a goalie in rd.2 ... one could argue Sarnia is in this hole because of the 2019 and 2020 drafts where we took Gaudreau and Namestnikov ... 2019 we took Ben in the 1st. O'Donnell in the 2nd all while we could have drafted Del Mastro in round 1 and Belluz in round 2 instead... lol you know.... the guys we eventually traded everything and the kitchen sink for. We could have had them for free if the organization had a brain.... then 2020 we take max and Morden - who didn't even come. Pathetic drafting.

Ya hopefully they smarten and get better at drafting. Last few drafts have been solid, still room to improve. I think with the addition of an import pick and 1st and 2nd round player, and a 2nd round goalie. I imagine we can trade some players at both forward and defenceman and should get a couple mid round picks in return. Going to be a lot of competition and tough decisions at camp.

Those were Sinclair's final 2 drafts. Definitely gigantic misses. If they just hit it big on one of those 4 picks that player is a significant piece vs LDN 2 years ago....
