Sarnia Sting 2024 25 Season Thread Part Iii

Funny enough I heard Sarnia really likes Brenner Lammens. Captain of Toronto Red Wings. Seems like a late riser & seen a few rankings/mocks with him in the top 10, but at 4 it would be a surprise.

His hallmarks? Size, Grit, effort, character lol. Think Cole Beaudoin/Bigger Angus MacDonell.

Obviously its early still & them liking him could mean absolutely nothing with them picking T4 now, but made me chuckle when I went to "scout", do research on him. If Seca lets Letang convince them to take him over a super dynamic player I'll very, very upset.
Ya that type of player is not a top 10 player especially with more Americans getting drafted. Could easily find a Beaudoin and Mcdonell in the 2nd or third round. Not that much skill just hardworking players.

I don't know how to quote someone's message across threads, but this was a response to @OHL4Life by @digicamo mentioning he's heard Kane Barch could be an option at #4 (said still early so definitely no sure thing)

"The rumour that’s been out there for a while was that his dad is also going to coach the Sting as an assistant. Not sure if that’s actually true of course. He also has an outside chance to make the U17 US team so if I was Sarnia I would just wait till the 2nd round and have them say they will only go there as they will have some leverage."

I definitely wouldn't mind hiring Krys Barch, but I wouldn't love hiring him then taking his son 4th overall. He's a great player it sounds like but most have him going between 8-15. Now if you could get him to play games & get him RD2 then sign me up.

Krys was a skating/skills coach for the Buffalo Sabres for 3 years then moved up to development coach for another 3 years before becoming the head coach of Huron Perth Lakers the last 4 seasons.

Feel like whenever Sarnia picks high they overthink it/do something outside the box & it's getting a bit annoying lol. Just take 1 of the kids everyone ranks, mocks, lists as a clear cut top 4 talent.
Ya if they get him in the 2nd that would be awesome, stick to the top ranking for the 4th overall pick lol.

Getting a power forward like Jackman would be enticing but I hope they don't take any forwards in the second round. They have plenty of depth at forward while they don't have as much on defence and in net. I'd like to see them take 2 d-men or a d-man and the top goalie in the draft with their two second round picks. It's really too bad that there's not a top tier d-man like Jamie Drysdale/Brandt Clarke that the Sting could take at 4. Getting that type of player would have made a lot more sense for the Sting
Yah it is a bummer. A top flight Dman would've been perfect after hitting it big w/Edwards & Di Iorio. I still feel like they cant go wrong if a guy like Jackman is available at 26. Especially in what seems like a weak D draft, obviously there'd be a good D there, but the gap of upside between them could be decent.

Certainly wont be mad though if they go D as it is a much bigger need as is goalie.

I wouldn’t mind if Legwand became head coach and made Barch the forward coach and demoted Letang to defence coach or just fired him and kept matsos. Wouldn’t mind Barch in the 2nd round and a defenceman with the other 2nd round pick. Then use the first rounder for a 6’0 plus top ranked forward in the first. I still think they should use the 1st round import pick on a 17/18 year old goalie. Then let grovenstine, mailett, and osipenko battle it out for back up. If Barch is on the bench they will definitely draft one of the Sarnia kids from Huron-Perth sometime in the draft.

to be fair he would seem to be better than those guys at 16, but I agree. Don't pass up dynamic, game breaking talent for a complimentary player. Get Edwards or Di Iorio someone that could ride shotgun with them & absolutely light it up for years to come.

Gotta think Letang would have none of that, lol. I'd definitely prefer Legwand, Barch running the bench.

Even though he's smaller I still would be happy if they taken Warren. Kid is putting on a show at OHL cup. He's an incredibly skilled player. Putting him next to Edwards or Di Iorio could be absolute magic.

Be awesome to get Jackman or Barch in RD2, but for that to happen some games would have to be played by the agent haha. Be sick if they came away with one of the top 4 & one of them, though.

It matters with the import draft. Guessing they are picking 8-12 range. If there is some stud Dman who's 18 that's available that'll be damn hard to pass up. My biggest worry for 26-27 is that Fischer, Young move on (if they aren't gone beforehand) & outside Hurt nobody else is a sure fire T4 Dman on our team currently.

Being able to replace Fischer/Young minutes internally would be gigantic so they don't gotta go spend a young player + picks on a top pairing Dman.

But what u want is valid too. If there is some stud 18 yr old goalie how can u pass that down either, lol. Especially if he's actually elite.

be a tough, tough decision cause odds are at their pick there will be some Dmen they love & some goalies they love.

Well Young will be too old to play so we know he won’t be back for 26/27 and unless Fischer gets hurt most of next year he will be a lock for the AHL in 26/27. I would say there is no chance either are in a sting uniform for 26/27.

Luckily seems like Letang's treatment isn't enough to deter Karimov. Made a post saying fun 1st yr must comeback stronger next season.

So that's nice to see. He has all the makings of a breakout season. At the end he was getting more ice and hopefully it stays that way from here on out.

Anyone find out where the ohl cup game is being broadcasted and is it free?
its on the OHLs YouTube channel right now

Camryn Warren (#95) is on Jr Canadians
Charlie Murata (#86) is on Don Mills

Both projected top 5 picks.

Gary Roberts son (#7 on JR Canadians) is also playing & he's quite good.

Warren ties the game then sets up the game winner with 1:29 left. Gorgeous saucer pass across the seem. He breaks the all time record for points at the OHL cup.

He's smaller than the other top ranked kids, but he is so nasty. He could be a perfect match to go with Di Iorio or Edwards.

Not sure he makes it to 4 after this week, but if he does I really, really hope we take him. game breaking skill. put JRC on his back.

I don't think Warren makes it to 4. He's too good. If I was a betting man id say Warren goes 1 to ptbo. Murata didn't have the greatest ohl cup while McGregor and Wycisk did. I personally would love McGregor but I have a feeling he's going to the 67's. Murata goes to GUE... I think Wycisk is there when we pick and we should take him. However, I'm not sure the buzz will take him. Well see tho.

He had such a dominant week he probably played himself into going top 2, yah. sucks haha!

I didnt love what I saw from Murata all week. Played perimeter & a bit soft. He looked a tier below McGregor Warren Delisle especially. but maybe was just an off couple games.

Wycisk id be very happy with.

Praying we don't overthink this, or do something idiotic. Just take the best kid. lol.

Did I miss something? On the buzz insta it says Wainwright isn't coming back? that he's a graduating player?
Someone asked the same thing on that Sting fan page

Terry Doyle replied to them saying -

OHL standard eligibility is age 16, 17, 18, 19. So when 19-year-olds are done they are considered graduating players because they age out for standard eligibility.

Teams can then dress up to 3 overage players, as 20 year olds - hence the term overage.

Feels stupid to me to phrase it the way they did, but they will be back (unless they sign NCAA)

Welp. If there's any doubt Letang is the one doing media so he ain't going anywhere.

About Wainwright he says "we know he's coming back" & with Young he almost shits on him a bit lmao.

“I thought Mitch Young at times had pockets of what he’s going to be. If you want to look at the glass as half full, which is not always easy, that’s exciting. That’s really exciting.”

Think that's a wild thing to say about the Dman who lead us in scoring most of the yr & was only -4 or whatever. No need for glass half full when he was our best player for long stretches lmao. But doesn't sound like someone they expect to lose.

He mentioned being very very excited about what Karimov showed which made me LOL.

Also clearly he views Maillet higher than I do saying - "Another good sign was “the emergence of Evan Maillet as a potential No. 1 goalie,” he said. “Some of the games he’s played (were) super positive, super exciting for next year and down the road.”

Rest of the article is here. Find it weird to label it as Sarnia adding a young player at 4 and it not be about that pick whatsoever.

Nice little scouting report on the rumored top 6 from someone who's watched these kids all year ( @BigDevs93 ) on the draft thread

--

Now let me talk about my top 5/6 this year post OHL CUP.

#1 Max Delisle - #1A Centre, versatile, tough, strong skater, excellent goal scorer, responsible transition play, loose cannon, match-up centre, physical, tough to play against, can do it all.

#2 Kaden McGregor - #1A Centre, dog on a bone, two-way, plays every shift like his last, highly skilled, great teammate, leader, tough to play against, character that you know will do whatever it takes.

#3 Camryn Warren - Centre but could be a better winger, dynamic, best skill in the draft, vision, speedy, hockey IQ, smaller but doesn't get hit often, potential of the charts, play driver.

#4 Charlie Murata - Could play centre/wing but probably a winger, best vision in the draft, loves the puck on his stick, great skater, could end up being the best point producer in OHL, leader, drives play, highly skilled.

#5 Jakkoo Wycisk - Sniper, 1A Centre, great active stick, playmaker, responsible defensively, smooth, Roobroeck effect (maybe he's over scouted, and has a lackadaisical approach to his game leaving you wanting more), but could be the best overall player in the age group.

#6 Brock Chitaroni - 1A Centre, explosive, creative, not scared of trying new things, unpredicatable, sniper, solid balance, play driver.

You can start to understand why the top of the draft is unpredictable. The variety, which is nice but it's tough to evaluate. This draft will be exciting, there's 5-6 players who could go number 1, there's 35-40 players who could go in the first round, and there's 50-75 players who could go in the 2nd round.

Should be a good one!

--

Thought I'd share it here, too. Really seems like we can't go wrong (can't wait us too so something stupid) with the top group. Another reason I'd prefer Warren (if available) is he may be a better winger. Guys like Delisle & McGregor are definitely better down the middle where we are loaded w/Beamish Di Iorio Edwards.

I didn't think it was possible for me to dislike Letang anymore. Every time I hear him speak the more I think he's simply not a very bright person. A lot of the things he says make no sense. The guy is completely clueless and tone deaf. Letangs greatest attribute is that Dale Hunter likes him as a person. Letang reminds me of the coaches son who always makes the team yet completely sucks... everyone knows he sucks but no one will ever admit it.

Sounds like a coach trying really hard to convince the paying fans things will be better next year and " I am doing a better job than you people think" . B.S. He had THE TEAM 2 years ago , it didn't get done . High skilled players this year , sucked the creativity right out of them and hard to understand the CONSTANT juggling and reinvention of lines. If John Tortorella reached his best before date , Letang has exceeded his

its hilarious Letang thinks he's some kind of coaching guru and it's everyone else who's wrong despite having an OHL coaching record of 145-163-40 and missing playoffs 25% of the time.

Not usually my area, but heard some info tonight from what id call a pretty damn good source lol. Don't take it as gospel, but this person would know..

NCAA is a worry for taking some of our guys. Not a shocker & im sure its a worry for every team, but it isn't just Young/Wainwright they are after..

Letang is stubborn. Which we know, but he doesn't like adjusting. At all. They never took multiple days to work on special teams even in JAN when they barely played. Players seem to like him though which is a touch surprising lol.

Entire team (management, coaches) were way to passive, content with the last 2 seasons being rebuilding years. Was a huge lack of urgency top down. The spike in attendance, STHs likely hurts when it comes to that.

Legwand isn't selling. Especially when his son is being drafted this yr & probably to us since that's what most often happens with owners sons in this league. We don't see him, but he's around quite often checking in. During playoff run he especially was around. Guy is 100% coming in.

Heard this from a few ppl now, Kostuch is doing well, but needs some procedures still. He should be back assuming all goes well. Not sure if his sight is normal, worse, or non existent in the one eye unfortunately.

This was the most surprising to me, Hatcher (remember him!?) isn't totally gone/not involved. His stake is greatly reduced, but he's still on board to some capacity. At least from last the person heard.

Nothing earth shattering but some useful info. Especially if they are correct about Legwand, Hatcher. Having those 2 + Guy up top is a pretty solid group up top. So many connections especially on the American side which maybe really shines thru in the coming years after NCAA agreement.

NCAA rule is good, but man its gonna be quite a roller coaster. Gonna get kids we never would've before, but we are gonna lose kids at 18/19 we never would've before. Quite the double edged sword.

Really disappointed the general feel is nothing will happen at least with Letang. Simply don't know how you come off this season not looking at the HC. And yah the team will be better next year, but that's because our U17s should be rather good & do it themselves most nights. Can only hope the leash is really short..

So yah, there's that. I'm sure Legwand will sell, we wont draft his kid, Letang will be fired & ill look like an idiot, but that's what I was told! Haha.
they have been sold to a group headed by mark guy, his company owns a bunch of Lincoln dealerships around ontario which is why he’s now so involved.

I have no idea if legwand has a piece of the pie still, but Guys group is majority owners now, once approved

Be interesting to see if he stays on. Hopefully he does. Nice asset to have esp now that he coaches a great program.

You know what really pisses me off is that there hasn't been one ounce of accountability or self reflection from Seca or Letang.

Not a "we failed this season, we let the fans down, we didn't do enough, we need to be better" etc.. It's as if they want us to pretend it didnt happen and to focus on next yr and the yr after.

Maybe im entitled or something, but a legitimate org that has high standards wouldn't miss the playoffs for a 2nd straight yr & be like ahh shucks look at next yr tho!!

Well think DS stays but I'm thinking Guy group firea Letang once Draft is done. Its isn't an enticing thing for a top 4 pick to want to come into. Poor coaching and no identity coach ZERO defense coach and worst PPand ok coaching in league. If my kid or I was a player top 4 ranked I'd want any other team but Our beloved sting picking up. New ownership of not, I don't want to play there almost as much as Niagara.
Be interesting to see how this draft plays out and if the player picked or wants will come.last year the player they wanted wasnr coming so picked someone else.
