Colorado is still in win now mode and will be having cap-issues this summer whne Rantanen needs a new contract. San Jose is rebuilding and need younger players

San Jose get:

Casey Mittelstadt 5.75M UFA 2027

Colorado get:

Mikael Granlund 5M UFA 2025

3rd

Colorado get help for the playoffs. Granlund plays 200ft and has been very good this year. San Jose get a younger player with 2yrs left that could mesh with their youngsters. The pick is added for the more years on Mottelstadt`s contract

I see where you are coming from; if Grier thinks Mittelstadt is a good cultural fit, this could make sense. It would be a good value for Granlund.

Otherwise, the Sharks could trade Granlund for futures, then package them to get something they absolutely want/need. Or, they can take a trade like this, where they're getting "objectively" great value for the player, but in the form of something that doesn't fit the team and timeline.

I’d rather stick with Mittlestadt but if we’re trading for a new C we need better than Granlund.
If Avs are trying Rantanen at 2C, then Granlund would be the perfect fit on the wing. He can play C/W and is very responsible defensively + his best skill is his passing. Mikko is a finnisher, so they could absolutely work well together.
Ooh and Granlund is a UFA. If he doesnt fit well enough, he can always be released, so no real damage done. You just get more cap for another player.

can't see the avs doing that. they'd add to get someone better like miller
There is this thing called salary-cap. I wouldnt take a 31yr old, thats turning 32, for 5yrs at 8M. I also dont think MacKinnon and Miller would mesh very well in the lockerroom if some of the gossip running around are true....

I was thinking this too, two roosters on a farm, yikes.

the cap works. and winning solves everything. i think mack and miller would do just fine.

Mittelstadt isn't worth much so the only point in trading for him is to trick another GM into overpaying for a 2nd time.

An interesting idea, but I'd prefer to trade Granlund for pure futures from a SJS perspective, not a fan of Middelstadt

No, this is bad value for Avs
Huh? It's literally a robbery for the Avs. Middlstadt's contract has negative value. Granlund gives Colorado an actual 2C who can score and they shed cap in the process. If the Granlund experiment were to fail they they can elect no to re-up him and they have 5.75 off the cap they can use in the off-season to imrpve the team.

Depends on what Grier is trying to do.

Granlund didn't magically transform into a great player after leaving Pittsburgh. He's benefitted from more playing time and advantageous deployments.

People seem to think Middlestadt is a negative value player but if he switched spots with Granlund, his value would probably be rehabilitated just like Granlund's has since he got to SJ.

I doubt Grier wants draft picks for Granlund but more likely players that fit with the timeline of Celebrini/Smith/Eklund/Dickinson/Askarov. Not sure of Middlestadt fits in there but value wise I don't think it's far off.

Maybe start following his play this year and last - not 2-3yrs back.

On the Sharks. Maybe the worst team in the league:

This isn't the good thing you think it is

What an ignorant post lmao

Reminds me of how Karlsson putting up 100 points on the worst team in the league meant he was great.

Granlund is having good seasons. That doesn't mean he's the answer to a team who needs a 2C for a cup run.

Would I rather have Granlund than Mittelstadt? Absolutely yes. Would I want either of those two as the 2C on the team I'm cheering for? Absolutely not.
