he has 4+ years left (5 including this season) @ 5M a season, he might bounce back but you won't get more than another cap dump with bounce back potential, basically a change of scenery type trade

we'll give you Armia or Hoffman for him ;)

He needs to bounce back in a major way to generate any value worth trading and unfortunately as some other posters have said, it’s probably an off-season adjustment where he focuses more on his speed and agility rather than bulking up. I don’t think it’s any coincidence that he’s had a harder time with injuries since bulking up too. We’ll see if him playing more minutes with Makar allows him to rebuild some confidence and play more offensively or it he’ll continue at his current status quo.

Right now he brings a lot more to the Avs then what he would receive in a trade. While this off-season is probably the ideal time to move him, if he doesn’t recover some of his previous value it could be more worth while to look at one of our other LHD.

No one needs an undersized offensive LD with huge flags in the defensive zone that is making $5m a year.

Maybe some mid-process rebuilder who needs a muffin shot point man on the power play will pony up one of their extra picks they have accumulated during their initial sell offs.

If Letang's absence is longer than expected, what about a fairly simple swap like Kapanen for Girard as a base?

Kapanen (26, 2 more years at 3.2M) has obviously not worked out at all in Pittsburgh, but still is able to show skill and workrate in small bursts. He's been on a mini hot streak recently, which gives us glimpses of the talent that is still there. I just have no confidence its ever going to blossom anymore, at least not in the speedy top-6 winger Rutherford originally traded for.

I think with a fresh start and in friendly confines he could get back to 20 goals easily, and of all places, an undermanned Avalanche team might be one where he gets more chances. Girard is another long term contract on D (after the pens just dumped two of those) but I recall the talent and would happily take a gamble on him and potentially net a PPQB in his mid-20s in the same mold as Tanger.

It's a "change of scenery" deal for sure, but one which (if the Pens are down a D for the year) might work.

Girard for Lundell was tossed around last year....times are a changing...

A few things have happened. Avs have fallen apart with injuries, Girard hasn’t bounced back to the level of play he was maintaining prior to last season and the Avs have some impending cap struggles upcoming and need to make a decision at LD.

I think the consideration speaks to the all around desperation the Avs have to make it through the current injury scare while addressing the other two issues.

Girard is a LD

You’ll only get value for him with somebody in a similar age/contract bracket coming back. It’s crazy that he is still only 24 but that contract went from looking fantastic to looking mediocre at best (and too long) in about 18 months.

Much like with a lot of the other good talent but poor form, maybe even still youngish but heavily contracted players out there - their value in todays market is just really subdued.

My guess is a lot of these types start to end up getting swapped around - because teams aren’t lining up to invest heavily in them with picks and good prospects.

the skills and track record are still there. even if his performance hasn't been great lately.
Sure…and he’s still young…hell there are prospects and rookies people are excited about that are his age.

But the giant caveat is there is no guarantee he’s going to go back to his former form and with $20 million on the hook AFTER this year and a modified NMC coming up - the is isn’t a risk another team is likely to invest heavily in.

If he had one year at $4 million left after this year? Completely different story, completely different value. But he’s got four more years at $5 million.

im not worried about his slump or contract. i think he'll rebound. his contract give him more value imo.

I don’t think it’s a value contract at this point. It’s not horrible but if I’m trading assets (picks/prospects) for him I need to see sustained reversion to his old form first. It’s not a minor investment to go 4x5 after this year.

That doesn’t mean I think the Avs are willing to dump him for a ham sandwich. I think it’s likely he’s here for a while.

if was back to his old form he likely wouldn't be available or would cost much more. $5m is the going rate for any young top 4 dman right now.
