I've habitually kept my own lists of prospects (in which I also note the actual poll results and the difference between 'em) for historical recordkeeping purposes. In particular, I find it useful for double-checking my biases, and it's also served as a record of past poll results. It's also good humility fuel sometimes - check out where I (and everyone else) had Cam Atkinson ranked in 2009, for example. ;)

This year's can be found here: 2024

I’ve sat down a few times to do my individual list that I do yearly. I just don’t have the time anymore to do the studying necessary to do it with any belief.

Couple that with the recent tragedy and I just don’t have it in me to do a list this year. My whole excitement for the sports year has been pretty zapped. As time goes on I’m sure it’ll return somewhat, but it’s just too raw right now.

My personal list that I made at the start:
  1. Cayden Lindstrom (even)
  2. Denton Mateychuk (even)
  3. David Jiricek (even)
  4. Gavin Brindley (even)
  5. Jet Greaves (+2)
  6. Charlie Elick (-1)
  7. Luca Del Bel Belluz (+4)
  8. James Malatesta (+2)
  9. William Whitelaw (+4)
  10. Jordan Dumais (-4)
  11. Sergei Ivanov (-2)
  12. Stanislav Svozil (-4)
  13. Oiva Keskinen (+2)
  14. Luca Marelli (+4)
  15. Andrew Strathmann (HM)
  16. Corson Ceulemans (even)
  17. Nikolai Makarov (+3)
  18. Tanner Henricks (HM)
  19. Luke Ashton (unranked)
  20. Luca Pinelli (-1)
    --------------------------
  21. Evan Gardner (-9)
  22. Mikael Pyythia (unranked)

on the board list and not mine:
Kirill Dolzhenkov (14) - haven't seen much of him but what I have seen just see a big guy that plays small
Guillaume Richard (17) - never watched and never hear much on him, total wild card for me

players I was higher on than consensus:
William Whitelaw - became a big fan of his this year; not sure if I just caught his best games (mostly watched Michigan-Wisconsin to see Brindley also) but he stood out to me, thought he was Wisconsin's most dynamic player on offense; think he has the elusiveness to be a small guy with a chance to make it
LDBB - strong first season in Cleveland, still few years away from NHL, excited to watch his development
Luca Marelli - not on my radar before draft, but the cut ups I watched after the draft were encouraging. Smooth, high IQ player.

players I was lower on than consensus:
Evan Gardner - just hard to know where to slot in goalies and this was the first year in a long time that we have had multiple promising goalie prospects; I did penalize him due to save% dropping in the playoffs while our other two G prospects raised theirs; he also played on top WHL team so more support from team
Jordan Dumais - knocked down list due to injury concern but I do acknowledge there is also a bull case if the skating was worse due to injury and he makes a full recovery
Stanislav Svozil - overall I do really like his game, just lower on my list due to where I see his NHL upside.

The thing that stands out to me is these lists reflect a shallow pool for most of CBJ's existence. 2016 may have been the high water mark. The 2019 list gave little reason for optimism and 2020 was only marginally better.

Contrast that with the 2021 list where not only do you start to see more high-end potential, but all of the top 5 (and 6 of the top 7) are currently on the NHL roster. Despite putting that number of prospects into the league since 2021 (and Fantilli joining that group last year) the current list still offers a lot of potential. Jiricek and Mateychuk could make the jump this season and Lindstrom could be a legit top line guy if healthy.

Events of the last 48 hours have dampened any enthusiasm I had for this season. Another top 5 pick seems likely. But I still see lots of reason for optimism about the team's future.

My top-20 for 2024:

1. Jiricek
2. Lindstrom
3. Mateychuk
4. Brindley
5. Svozil
6. Marrelli
7. Elick
8. Ivanov
9. Dolzhenkov
10. McCue
11. Greaves
12. Keskinen
13. Malatesta
14. Gardner
15. LDBB
16. Henricks
17. Dumais
18. Richard
19. Makarov
20. Whitelaw

I was tempted to put Ashton somewhere in the 16-20 range but that would have been against my principles. I can't rank someone I've seen zero games of. Some guys like Richard could be much higher had I seen them more often than once a year or less.

Just as a fan who likes to monitor other teams prospects. What's up with Cuelemans? Seems like people were pretty high on him a few years ago. Just not living up to those expectations?

He was always a tools but no toolbox guy. They hoped with time it would refine, and it hasn’t. A better college program could have helped. He’ll need a long time in the minors and a lot of improvement if he’s going to make it.
