I think it was the concussions that did him in. Vats looked to be on a roll and regain his mojo with Devils in 2017-18, oversized role or not, but then Kucherov's G4 blindside happened. Add Brassard's elbow next year and he was never the same really. Maybe it was physical, at least for a while, or maybe it was mental and motivational, who knows. The end result is that he regressed, and stopped getting (or earning) chances showcase to his skills.

Vats still had his moments: for Canes he again punched above his weight momentarily (until Hamilton was rushed back from injury to what become a failure of a series), and in the trainwreck that was Devils' 2020-21 season he was in fact seriously decent after a dead slow start hampered by COVID, taking on an unexpected role in steadying the PK that had been a dumpster fire. But the Stars stint was forgettable and a sign of things to come.

He's a fresh father just now, and that may well have been the last straw that steered him away from the risk of another journeyman season, or the uncertainty of a PTO. In Switzerland the season is less taxing, the travels much shorter, and let's face it, quality of life for himself and his family is excellent. I'd be surprised if we don't see him in rejuvenated form in EHT, and he should certainly make an effort to make it to Beijing. We'll see.

Also, Vats played some of his best hockey with Clayton Stoner, of all people. It is one of the great mysteries of life as to why NHL coaches never really re-discovered this formula of partnership with a physical stay-at-home wingman. Oh well, revisionist history.

A great point! All the way back in Finland he always played best with a big stay-at-home partner (Kalle Koskinen in JYP IIRC).

Not sure about what wold be the best partner option if Vats gets picked for Beijing. Lindell, Määttä, Mikkola or maybe even Ohtamaa?

I don´t understand how a team like Edmonton did not give him a cheap look in 220. Vatanen is catching alot of flack in this forum. But in my opinion I think he is a crafty vet, a team-first guy, and a versatile offensive player.

Edmonton's probably keeping a spot open for Evan Bouchard to claim. Little surprised that Vatanen couldn't find a landing spot, but there are fewer RD spots open around the league than most would think. I thought Seattle or Columbus could make some sense, but they have a bunch of LD on one way deals so perhaps adding another contract just wasn't an option at this juncture.

Parting words all in Finnish:

No big revelations: he did get NHL offers, all one-way, but wasn't excited by any. Acknowledges that the last few seasons have not been the greatest. So, waited all summer for something interesting but as that came to nothing, went with Geneva as Filppula praised the team & the city. Expects a chance to play & icetime, team is in good spirits and practices hard. First game tonight Friday, wants to help the team and knows that results are expected. Nothing definite on Olympics as that will have to be earned but Sochi was great. Finally, hopes to return to JyP one day and maybe win something with the hometown team.

Translation: Vats was prolly offered league minimum and uncertain journeyman's life in a limited 3rd pair role. Geneva is obviously everything but, and the financials are equal or close.

In another interview, he says he's not closing the door on NHL yet, and will look into it after this season:

Miksi ihmeessä 30-vuotias suomalaistähti jätti NHL:n ja lähti Sveitsiin? Sami Vatanen kertoo yllättävän ratkaisunsa taustat

Vatasen sopimus Sveitsiin on yksivuotinen.
– Katsotaan NHL-kuvioita taas tämän kauden jälkeen. Ovi sinne on ehdottomasti auki, en halua sulkea sitä vielä pois, Vatanen sanoo Yle Urheilulle.
Translation:
Vatanen's contract in Switzerland is for 1 year.
- Let's see about NHL again after this season. The door is definitely open, and I don't want to close it yet, Vatanen tells to Yle Sports.

The article writer speculates he was hoping for a longer-term slightly higher-dollar contract, but didn't get one.

Incidentally, the Swiss season comes to an end right on the NHL TD. The regular season is supposed to end on March 14, the pre-playoffs are set to start on March 18, and the playoffs on March 25.

Vatanen didn't look too bad yesterday when Team Finland beat Team Russia 3-0 in Euro hockey tour matchup. Certainly has some game left in him.

There was this between periods quick TV interview where he was very much saying he's trying to get a spot on Finland's Olympics team.

I could live with him in a bottom pairing with a defensively responsible player like Hakanpää.
