Based on the insane quality of forwards in this years draft lets say Hypothetically Sam Reinheart was available in this years draft where do you think he would go?

Tough question.

I think he would go around 3 - 4..

Seth Jones
Nathan MacKinnon
Drouin / Reinhart
Drouin / Reinhart
Barkov

I wouldn't be surprised if some people would take him 2nd before Mac. He's a really special player. Amazing hockey sense.

Yeah, I'd figure he would be taken, anywhere in the top 5, still hard to believe that he captained Canada's U18 at the Ivan Hilinka Tournament at his age, so he has leadership qualities. if Calgary selects Drouin with their pick and If Calgary happens to be in a lottery position next year it would be a scary core of Reinheart,Drouin, Baertschi in your top six.
I think he could be a number 1 center hopefully.

Great hands, great hockey sense, very good shot, good size, decent speed. I'd guess somewhere in the top 10, probably in the 6-10 range. Next year, he'll probably go top 5 based on what we know now about next year's class.

I thought he was projected to be in the 1-2 running with Ekblad.

Funny thing is I bet people would be picking apart his playoff performance of 1 point in 5 games against a powerhouse Oil Kings, when in reality over the past two seasons he's shown more than enough to be considered a top 4-5 pick in the '13 draft.

The one thing is that I always see is prospect fatigue in late birthday players. It happened with Couturier, it's happening with Monahan this year, I guess you could say Fowler to an extent. People like the shiny new toy a lot of the time. These late birthday guys burst on earlier than some of their draft peers because they've been in the league for one year longer, but it shouldn't diminish their standing as prospects.

Anyways, great prospect. Right up there with Kane and B. Schenn as great recent WHL forward picks in the lottery.

Apologies for an unhelpful response, and others may have good ones... But my opinion is it is too hard to tell really. 1 year at this age makes a big difference, and there's a reason why he isn't eligible this year. I feel that it's too difficult to project how he will look in a year's time exactly. We can project how he is compared to the rest of his draft class and likelihood to develop and how, etc... but to compare where he will be in one year to where prospects are right now is very difficult I think. If you just go with his play right now and abilities, well he wouldn't fare as well because he's only 17 now.

If I watched him more I'd at least be able to make a conservative guess but now I don't really know.

Is he known as a physical forward ? or does he tend to shy away from Contact. I honestly wonder if next year is going to be his last season in the WHL.

Reinhart*

I think that Drouin, Mack, and Jones are a big class above Reinhart. I'd feel safe saying that Barkov and Nichuskin also have more upside. He would go 6-11 imo

I agree with zjh. I don't think he would go as high as most people are saying. He's an elite thinker of the game, but he's not huge, doesn't have a great shot and isn't the best skater out there. I wouldn't pick him in the top 5 or 6.

To be honest, I'm not even sure he's the top prospect the WHL has to offer for the 2014 draft. In my books it might actually be Leon Draisaitl.

Draisaitl impressed me late in the year. I think he will tear it up next year. At this point I think he skates a bit better than Sam also. I'd give Sam the edge in IQ, he's a tier or two above anyone in the 2014 class in that regard. Going to be a race to the finish between those two out west.

My best guess:

1. Jones
2. MacKinnon
3. Drouin
4. Reinhart
5. Barkov

He is at this point essentially a less developed MacKinnon...
Yet MacKinnon is only 2 months older and has played 39 less CHL games than Reinhart, don't get me wrong I like Reinhart but MacKinnon will likely be a notch above him career wise.

MacKinnon seems to have can't miss NHL tools.

I think people will make the same mistake(underestimation) on Reinhart as they did on RNH. There is an incredible upside to players that think the game at a elite level. It is that kind of player that becomes the coveted first line center that makes everyone around him better.

This isn't meant to be a sleight on a guy like Mackinnon who has extreme physical tools and elite skill, and I do like Mack better as a prospect.

Having watched a little bit of both players, I can assure you that's not a good comparison. Reinhart is cerebral, Mackinnon is instinctual. Reinhart doesn't have even close to Mackinnon's skating either.

I'd take Reinhart #5, after Jones/Mackinnon/Drouin/Barkov. Like another poster said, he's only 2 months younger than Mackinnon and Barkov, that has to be a consideration.

Yup, I agree. The subtlety of their games is amazing, you fall in love a more each time you watch them because you pick up on the little things. Players with huge IQ's are fun to watch with repeated viewings.
