Value of: Sam Bennett

That said, I just don't see it coming to that. Bennett will re-sign with Florida around Reinhart's # and will leave $ on the table. Sorry, I know you said not to do this.

In no way is Bennet going to come close to Reinhart's $8.6 million cap hit.
Bennett's max for Zito would be 7 years x $6.5 to 7 million per in Florida.

Bennett's value would probably be pretty meager, considering how key a role he plays on a team gearing up for its title defense in a few months.

You could certainly find contenders willing to add him in exchange for good futures - a first rounder and a decent prospect, maybe. Yet do futures move the needle for the Panthers? They would ideally want to replace him with a comparable veteran playing a similar role, with similar size, snarl, grit and production in him. Contenders won't be offering that.

And neither will Florida.

If a contender has a player it can't sign under its payroll/budget, it keeps him for the playoff run and then looks to replace him in free agency. Teams in Florida's position don't prioritize asset management. If anything, they trade for more players they know they won't keep beyond June.
Tarasenko plus third or second plus a prospect??

I mean, that's a pretty crappy downgrade if you're Florida and trying to repeat as champion.

If you're only concerned about asset management and consider the most important factor for the Panthers the fact that Bennett is about to be a UFA, well then I guess that this is better because Tarasenko is signed for another year. Not everyone considers that extra year a good thing with this player, though. Most would prefer Bennett, by a lot. Depends on the quality of the prospect.

This is academic, though. The OP's probably not in sync with Florida management, who will probably bring in more rentals, not deal them out the door. Florida is right in the middle of its competitiveness window.

Florida should be willing to offer 8M+, because plenty of other teams would.

Dude is 2nd on the team in ES goals and 3rd in ES points. He's 4th in pts and pts/gp in their last two playoff runs while bringing so much more to their team.

He isn't worth $8 mil in Florida and he's my favorite player on the team.
If it's 8 mil per, Zito better stress 6 years instead of 7 or 8.
I think Zito will bribe him with signing bonus money just like the last 5-6 contracts he handed out.

He's one of the most important players on the team, if they let him walk someone will pay him 8M, would be silly to lose him over 1M, especially with the cap rising so much.

He surely won't be traded considering he's a playoff type of player, plus Panthers are serious contenders.

They're not in "win now mode", they're in "win it all while the window is open" mode.

But let's play the game like if it was a possibility.

I guess he would fetch a 2026 1st ('26 1st Rd picks seems to worth more than 25's, furthermore most of contender teams traded their '25 1st) + a 2nd + a good prospect, maybe even a relatively recent 1st Rd prospect or young NHL player.

That's what I think would be the return for a player that is tailor made for the playoff...

The teams willing to trade for Bennett as a rental won’t be able to offer what the Panthers need(I.e. a roster player). It would need to be a three team trade where the Panthers can fill another need, perhaps D.

Bennett to Team X
Dobson to FLA
Return for Bennett + to NYI

Just as an example. I think NYI would prefer roster players over picks for Dobson.

I'd pay him 7.5M x 8 years or maybe even 8M x 8 just because the cap is going up, other teams would have a hard time matching that. He isn't worth it in the regular season but is in the playoffs.

It wasn’t meant to be a real proposal. Just meant to illustrate the kind of deal that would make sense for FLA if they were to move Bennett. Just used Dobson because his name has been in trade rumours recently.

8 years at 29 is risky for that type of player.

We have one here in MTL (he's not as good for sure, but the playing style is pretty similar) and he went through a serious cliff in terms of performances when he got 30.

For Florida it's a calculated risk because they're in their Stanley Cup window.

So if he gives them a chance at winning it all in the first years of his contract, and then falter in the latter years, it's still worth it.
You HAVE to do whatever you can to win it all when the window is open in the NHL.

But for middle of the pack teams, I personally don't think this kind of acquisition, with such a contract, would be worth it in the long run...

It's risky an obviously Zito is privy to all the data on his health that isn't publicly out there. But everyone knows that his style isn't great for longevity and the falling off a cliff can happen. Not really worried either way, we have Lundell who can step up to be a 2C. Up front we have depth.
