Sam Bennett: Contract Negotiations

Have pretty high confidence he'll be signing for $7-7.5M x 8 years. Sure it may not age great, but you never know and I don't think we care much about what's happening in years 5-8 that much.

$7.5x8 years = $60M so for a state/province with taxes to match that, they'd have to pay $10Mx7 years which is highly unlikely and even then, why would Bennett want to leave if its basically the same offer.

Its the same math Verhaeghe made when he signed his contract "below market", and Reino, and Forsling...

I don't know Benny or have any inside information but I do listen to the words people say and Benny sounds as if he IS home.
He is an alpha in "THE PACK" and the camaraderie is important to him. He'll want to get paid and I believe Zito will make it happen.
I misread the last sentence. Thought it said ‘laid’. Which is probably true too. But then I was expecting a different name as the target. Not Zito. Another favorite interviewer. If not her, then at least Jovo.

Listening to Leafs podcast, they are pretty confident Toronto will make Bennett an offer he won’t refuse. I think we need to keep him at all costs… a la Reinhart.

Would love for Marchand to resign but that all depends on Ekky taking less than before (unlikely) and trading someone’s like Rodriguez away. Mackie due for a raise as well, but him not being effective in the playoffs should keep his raise reasonable

funny, i heard on a leafs youtube channel today that he was rumored to be ready to re-sign.

there will be a big $ difference, esp if they don't come back in this series and marner walks. but if you're in his shoes, why the hell would you want to go there? you've seen the city chew up and spit out several hometown boys over the past 5-10 years. bennett is the type of guy they need but he's smart enough to know he's not going to fix things by himself.

we need to remember that marchy was asking for 6.2m. his final offer to the Bs allegedly came down some but most people seem to feel that's around his market value.

As in no more than $7m? Or no higher than his percentage of the cap, which would be like $7.4m?
If it's the former, then I think he's gone.
Given that the next Jump in 2 seasons is over 100 mil, I think similar cap% would be fair

We have what, 19 mil for next season?

Whatever Bennett takes is gonna dictate what happens to Ek and Marchy unless Tkachuk hits LTIR for 6 months as reported

And by the way, if that f***er does hit LTIR for that long he better not be allowed to go to Milano

So according to Grok…to get the same take-home money with a $7,000,000 salary in Florida, you must make $8,800,000 in Toronto (all numbers in USD). So unless they offer more than that, then just based on numbers staying FL is appealing… add the intangibles (current winning culture, no intense media scrutiny, weather, amenities, etc), really hope he stays.

Posters here want to blame state taxes, which is an advantage, but aside from that, lets not forget that price of living in Toronto, and NY for example, is much higher than in Florida. But that is not brought up. Only taxes taxes taxes.

"According to Grok..." may as well say "according to the homeless conspiracy theorist on the corner."

Who in their right mind would want to play in that cesspool (Toronto)? Maybe decades ago the desire to be part of a heralded history was important. Nowadays, with so many more options available, only ego-driven (media whores) or money-driven (cash whores) players desire to play there. From management to the fans, the entire organization reeks of entitled sycophants who believe they are better than all others, although they have accomplished nothing.

I firmly believe, as a Panther fan, Toronto despises us because they ain't us. Just listen to their own words. They refuse to acknowledge their shortcomings. It's always someone or something else's fault. Any praise they have for other teams is always dripping with disdain or petty snipes.

For example, on yesterday's Kyper & Bourne show, Kyp had to scold the other two babies on the stark reality of why the Leafs lost. Earlier in the season, the two children were stroking themselves over acquiring three ex-Panthers and how much they had improved their team, all the while mocking the Panthers with sly, backhanded chirps. Now that they have lost, they are fantasizing about grabbing two more pieces (Benny & Marchy) from the team they loath. Oh yeah, that will fix the problem.

But isn't that stating that Florida teams have even more of an advantage than just taxes.

Exactly. There are plenty of perks playing for the Panthers, but taxes is always at the forefront. There are ways around the taxes, which Matthews has done already, but they keep bringing that shit up.

Who wouldn’t want to wake up, put on some shorts and their flip flops in December, and take their golf car to the practice rink. The lifestyle isn’t for everyone, but that’s pretty nice.

Any agent worth a damn would be telling players to setup business structures in low tax states to maximize the contract and minimize taxes.

The whole thing is a nothing burger.

I'm sure some dream they had traded Marner for MT back then.

I agree,

If Bennett wants to play for a big "traditional" hockey market, he'd be better in Montreal.

Actually....I'm afraid that he would consider Montreal. The team will be good in the next years and he'd become a fan favorite there. And as much as I hate the team, I have to admit that there's probably no better place to be for a hockey player when the team is good. He's exactly the kind of player they need to take the next step.
