Ya I'm not super excited to trade Reinhart or Bennett for picks, rather defense as you mentioned.

If we did ship Bennett for picks, it'd better be a team you think will decline really quick in hopes one of the 1sts becomes a top 10 pick.

Pittsburgh for example may be showing signs of some decline.
But it's way easier to take the proven defenseman in trade that fits our window opening again next year.

Bennett just has too much value to us right now, really hope Zito sees this.

What GM would be stupid enough to trade a future unprotected first if his team isn’t even good enough to make the playoffs next year? That’s a fireable offense.

The third line of your post is why I wonder if somebody will step up.

And I specifically wonder about Dubas in this case we know the trade Kadri blocked before he went to Colorado was for Brodie and Bennett so he's tried before.

We also know he prefers players he can either sign like Giordano, or players with term like Muzzin , or the attempted MAF/Brandon Hagel trade he doesn't really like the pure rentals.

Bennett has term.

I bet if Bennett is available Dubas is calling
The reported trade that was nixed due to Kadri blocking the move was Brodie and Jankowski.

They are in a bad spot they need to make the playoffs .
They can't end up 10th last and Montreal having a chance at Berard.

They won't sell

They will be buyers

They will try to strengthen there D.

Although as a leaf fan come and talk to Dubas.

That's a very short sighted approach, so the panthers should ruin their future just so Montreal doesn't get a better pick

Brian Dumoulin and a top 3 2024 protected 1st for Bennett.

Panthers would be outrageously stupid to trade Bennett, given that he seems to be the only center on the roster resistant to Paul Maurice ennui, but I guess that would be par for the course for Florida.

at the end of the day, asset management is more important than the optics of where Florida's pick lands for the Habs. So, if they think that selling some guys is good for the future of the club, they should do it. That 1st is already gone, there's no use pining over it

Yes. I seem to recall it was Kadri, Brown (to be flipped) for Brodie and Jankowski. Bennett was not involved.
Can't remember who was to move with Kadri but I definitely remember it being Jankowski because of Feester's comments that he was the best player in the draft. Ops! I try to watch the draft every year and then take note of these type of hot takes or bold statements to see how they turn out. Also watch how the "fallers" and reaches make out for teams as well.
